Summer is here, heat is all around us and this time we have decided that we will replace the hot shooting range with a cold pool in the comfort of our backyard.
The experiment is simple, fully gear up, jump in water and try to remove your gear in time to get to surface. We want to see see the difference between removing a plate carrier under water with a quick release system or without it.
Quick release system on a plate carrier - does it work? Is it efficient in case you fall in water? Is it easier to use than normal plate carrier attaching system? We tried to answer those questions for you.

In the Army, we had to to demonstrate that we could jump off a high dive, sink to 12’/4m depth, ditch our rifle (we used fake rifles) and kit, and swim up to the surface. This was done in full uniform and battle rattle. It’s harder than it sounds, but good confidence building.

That's why I modified my own with a cobra buckle at the shoulder and the tube system on the cummerbund. Ditch the rifle and helmet, and now you have a very tactile, easy to find buckle you squeeze to release the shoulder, and two tube attachments at the front that simply slide off with a quick hard pull up or down. I see the Husar Noble 4.0 has the option for both cobra buckles and molle tubes at the shoulder, much better than trying to grope for a small pull tab with failing velcro.
@MrSnakedHD
@MrSnakedHD 2 жыл бұрын
The only issue is you can’t release cobra buckles if they’re under tension, that’s why it’s never used as an e-doff and only for convenience to don/doff your plate carrier. Tube works great though

@@MrSnakedHD Absolutely agree, though I will say, I've never had an issue, other than once, releasing a cobra buckle under load, even with four plates and several full magazines. Being a recreational diver who uses diving weights, a way to get your weights off in a hurry is a must. Most humans can hold their breath for 3-4 minutes under calm situations. Now imagine you're in a high stress gun battle and fall into a river or creek. Those few minutes turn to seconds considering your body is already on over drive. Your heart rate is up, stress has set in, you're fighting the panic, thoughts are bouncing all around, your adrenaline has a grip on you while your fear is holding you back.

whenever operating in an maritime enviroment its always reccomended to have some sort of flotation device. theres 100s out there and the worst feeling even in a deep end of a pool is that when it's not working when its supposed to and having to swim to the surface, granted didnt have any extra kit on the time. we'd also use a floatation device made by Tulmar pretty slick setup, has both floatation but also a rigging harness attached to the system so if you have to do any rigging on containers on a moving ship you won't have to worry so much of the drowning part in the event you do fall.

It seems like getting the rig off is heavily based on if you can feel what you are touching with your hands (excluding calm mindset). It would be really interesting to see how having gloves on (and what types of gloves) would affect your ability to get your rig off. It may seem stupid since the procedure would probably be to take off the gloves first, but the additional time required to do so (and possibly fumbling) may induce some increased stress underwater. That may actually have a significant impact on your ability to get out of your rig, or maybe not. Idk, it’s just a thought. I hope if you do any additional tests, that you are okay and safe. Getting underwater like that would scare the shit out of me.

I remember hearing about something similar to this when they were doing the study of World War II on D-day on how so many soldiers drowned because of their gear The study found that it was a combination of the gear weighing them down and the fact that they would sink so quickly that even if they managed to get the gear off they could not reach the surface in time It’s fascinating and simultaneously terrifying how something can be overlooked when its potential to be deadly is so high In my opinion if you have to remove more than one piece of gear in order to survive then you honestly won’t someone should definitely design a vest that doesn’t require you to pull it over your head the opposite scenario to this would be if your pants were on fire and you had to remove your shoes before you could takeoff your pants

Are the plates you used neutrally bouyant? I have the rma armament plates and was wondering if it would make a difference. I also added a layer of sleeping pad foam on each side. I need to try it all together but the scene in saving private ryan got me thinking about this exzact point. Good stuff guys 🤘

Good idea and test, could only imagine the panic if one was in a scenario falling into water unexpectedly and being disoriented at first , also imagine being unsuspecting and submerging and accidentally sucking water in first , might cut time in half

Keep in mind - you have the luxury of the backing of the pool floor to keep you stable. If you have ever done Dunker - you will know that as soon as you hit the water, you have no orientation, you'll have your fellow team mates' arms, legs kicking you nudging you, and also the water current, if there are waves. So it's hella more scary.

Swimmer cut plates are not boyent they just have a more tapered cut at the top to facilitate a swimmer's arm movements you still need to wear some type of buoyancy device to swim and not sink.
@PolenarTactical
@PolenarTactical 2 жыл бұрын
"Swimmer plates" or "swimmer cut" is usually a term for ballistic plates that have reduced corners that make it possible for full range of motion with your arms. Usually swimmer plates are not actually meant for swimming. You have special ballistic plates that are made for amphibious work and you can usually get them in different buoyancies but that doesn't help you stay in the surface since those plates are usually used by divers. Most level 3 plates that are made from UMHWPE are positively buoyant but im not sure that would be enough to keep you afloat with the rest of your kit.

@@PolenarTactical it might not act as a full blown pfd, but it just might give to enough buoyancy that you can swim back to the surface without needing to ditch your gear.

During ww2, the British parachute harnesses had a quick release feature but the American harness did not. On Dday, a lot of American paratroopers were dropped off target and some landed in flooded areas and drowned due to the weight of their gear and not being able to get out of their harnesses quick enough. Just watching you do your experiment in a pool, made me a little anxious and I can only imagine how the American paratroopers might have felt especially early morning when it was still dark.

i had to swim the 25kg anchor of an inflatable barge around in a lake last week. The spot we were anchored at was about 5m deep, we had to go to ~9m, which was a walk of around 20m underwater. That was not very practical. The solution ended up being to pulling myself all the way down, pulling it out of the lakebed, tossing it a meter further, going back up.

As some one else pointed out, working with gloves complicates things, the pull tab seems to need a "bump" or something like that to really stand out and create a very good purchase area. And it needs to be located in an neutral area so it could be reached easily by both hands. For the rifle sling, put in both at the front and the end one of those QR that you find on the strap that goes across Your chest on a regular backpack. Just an amateurs view. As a claustrophobic and scared of being underwater with my head without Google's ( after an drowning incident when I was 4), You are brave even if it is a pool with clear water and You could stand up and get air. Maybe there should be a test in next years competition. Have a 2meter deep pool, get a pair of black tinted Google's and everyone who competed in a full rig must go through this test, no matter how long it takes to come up WITH THE GUN, if they master it without help, they has a pass if not, they couldn't use this plate carrier. The aim is not to eliminate anybody, but make them train for this situation. And the rifle should have a magazine with the weight of a at least a 20 round of 5.56x45. Then You could expand this to be the last station in a competition, and they have to bring out their rifle and themselves from the pool, get a magazine and do a 20 round station, with only one mag, wet, and tired.

Interesting to see how it all went. Not much time difference in the base attempt to the (working) QR attempt. (Pretty sure Ziga picked this time to do this test in order to flex on those of us suffering heatwaves.)

Very important and interesting topic. Demonstrated just right, tho deeper pool would have shown the more dramatic experience but would be unsafe for Ziga. Glad you included some funnies by the end of the video. :) Suggestion to continue water topic. Crossing small bodies of water (river, creek) in full gear. Can you actually swim with full gear? Can life vest help you stay somewhat afloat? What solutions or methods can be used for this task (excluding boats or kayaks ofc)?

Very good test, As my many years experience in military, the new armed gear always make my team disappointed in gear test, when u fall in water, the most important thing is keep crew stay calm, so it means enough time to fix the problem, 2 small co2 and air bag on armed are easy to make it , it keep u float in water , just drop the heavy and u still can return fire , cause if u release all the armed, it also mean u just a easy target without weapon , especially like u said the deep water , that’s first , and second about the quick release, I really don’t like Velcro Tape, the good Quick release buckle can fix all issue, for example the Quick release buckle much more easy to release and keep quite for some special knife action when u need release the armed , the noise of Velcro tape just make all enemies know where u are, also it easy to sticky any fiber thing or tree or grass when u touch, and the Velcro tape not for many time to use , easy dead when dirty or battle , now all they use the Velcro tape on armed just because it cheap, one funny thing , most fast to release is the armed from Vietnam war, that’s some my personal opinion, now I design the armed for crew , maybe just 5 or 10% Velcro tape use for less change parts on armed,, recent I saw the news, 2 seal team fall in sea and can’t make it cause the armed they can’t release
Can you swim with Combat Gear?
