Very helpful. Another technique that I can add to the arsenal. Additionally, it's good to point out the difference between a timber faller who needs to get many trees on the ground, as quickly as possible, verses arborists who need that one tree on safely on the ground or you may be making a call to your insurance company.

as a west coast cutter, we still take time on the face cut, tree goes off and gets broke thats money lost, on big timber its big money lost

I started doing this as a safety precaution, didn't even realize that this is a technique, I just saw the necessity. 🤷♂️ One thing that I have yet to understand is how to aim the bar so that the top and bottom cut come together everytime. I'm usually close enough where a little clean out (if any) might be called for, but is there an aiming technique you use or is it muscle memory and practice? I've probably only dropped several hundred or so trees, so I'm somewhat of a "shade tree" arborist.

top cut first. Use top gunning line (or sight) to aim notch. Make sure the bar is level when you finish the first cut. This is done by feel and a fairly simple skill to develop. Then, when making the bottom cut, just make sure the bar is level and it should match up on both sides. The plate cut is used to add visibility so you can see exactly where the tip is heading

Thank you. Like most things that hadn't occurred to me. I feel stupid for not having thought of this before.
