In this video I talk about the fundamental differences between the Steel Plated Rovner Versa ligature Vs. ligatures without steel plating. These ligatures may look similar, however, they are fundamentally different ligatures.

There are benefits to non-plated fabric ligatures. For one, since they are flexible at the point of contact with the reed, they put equal pressure on every reed in exactly the same way. It removes a variable. On the other hand, a plated ligature is always the same shape (while reeds are not). So each reed has a different point of contact with the ligature. One way this is most obvious is in articulation. The flexible fabric ligatures make the reed feel much more stable while tonguing.

I wouldn't say one is better than the other, they both give differing degrees of response. I know plenty of pro sax players who use 'non plated' material ligatures. I certainly wouldn't say that a simple material ligature should be thrown in the bin. Try using elastic bands as a ligature.....they're not 'bad' at all

I agree. Like most out there I have more ligatures than I do socks. The non plated lig shown here gives a great response and feel, especially in the low end and provides a warmer, mellower more Getz like sound. It's not up there with the best for altissimo though. Of course it can be inverted which brightens the tone and allows for an easier high note hit. I recently got the rather pricey Rovner Platinum lig which is beautiful to look and functions in a similar way to a non-metal plate fabric/leather one but with extra weight and mass along the reed contact area. I prefer the sound and feel of the inverted non- metal plate lig tbh.

I use both ligatures I have a rovner versa which I use for more of a modern sound but I also use rovner dark and I use it more for a jazz band and also for a classic sound

I don't know about sax, but there are very good clarinet players which prefer the non steel plated ligature and they screw it very tight

What is the point of using them instead of the original metal one that comes with the saxophone?

Interesting. I'm a beginner and I upgraded the crappy metal ligature that came with my clarinet to a BG Flex which doesn't have the steel ridges but is a much better lig than what I previously had.

Do you think the rovner MK 3 CR1 is enough for clarinet? Or should you buy Versa?

Total n0nsnese 'sic' Provided the reed is receiving a load at 90* to the table it is only the amount which affects anything.Sideways stress ,such as with old 2 screw ligs distort and damage that load. Geoff Lawton got it right with his design, it all depends on how tight , Nothing smothers the reed -its the first 18mm which does the work ,not the thick end .

yeah, I notice a HUGE difference between the two ligatures. It is very nuanced.

We have done blindtests with players and oscilloscopes -once the reed is wet played in,warm and swollen there is No differerence which can be measured and quantified. A dry reed over clamped,or a dry reed squashed sideways with two screws will play different to a correctlyfitted one.not over tightened. Of course the best is a piece of string, correctly called a ligature and how all reeds used to be fixed before commerce took over.
