Welcome back Brendan. Lovely items. I'm not sure if you recall that I spent 10 years before the mast in the merchant service. Quite often I was at the top of the rigging maybe as we were passing through the Roaring Forties in the Southern Ocean. When I came down there was nothing better than a wooden bowl of hot soup. Hope you had a good day on Saturday with Les Thorne. My heart was there but unfortunately I wasn't. I have been so diverted from turning this past few months so I'm easing myself back in but have decided to tidy up my workshop first as it's like a disaster zone. I ran into an old friend a few days ago and he offered me a trunk of an elm tree which was cut down 10 yrs ago to stem Dutch elm disease. I should have it cut into manageable pieces within the next 10 days or so and I will be pleased if you accept some as it's well and truly seasoned. Best wishes to Rosemary and you.

Hi Alan, I didn't bother you about Saturday because I knew that if you could go you would. I'll tell you about it later.... like over a coffee some time? Best Wishes, Brendan.

Good to see you back at it Brendan. Beautiful and functional pieces. You know I did a few large salad bowls and sanding with butcher block conditioners. Take care my friend and do a kindness Mark
@baconsoda8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark. These were hard enough because I only had one chance as the blanks were hard to get. The lady order 2 more of each and, luckily, I bought a couple of extra blanks that are slightly smaller but she want them for children so that should be fine. Best Wishes, Brendan.

Lovely set Brendan, well worth the hard work.

Thank you Mark. I'm going out to make 4 more now. All day turning, that's ok.

Well you have been busy in the workshop Brendon. They are all excellent looking bowls and plates, I see from the comment below that she took them all. Well done and keep safe Regards Glyn

Thanks Glyn, and the lady ordered 4 more! That's the sort of lovely compliment that makes all the worry at the lathe in case I mess up seem like nothing. I was very pleased. Best Wishes, Brendan.

A really beautiful array of bowls and platters Brendan, it's no wonder that your skills are in such demand mate :) Take care Mike
@bmacwoodturning20358 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mike, I really appreciate that, especially coming from you. I was really pleased when the lady asked for them all and 4 more so that eased my mind and let me stop beating myself up about quality a bit... only a bit mind, it wouldn't do if I let myself be satisfied with something I made. I think we all see the faults first. Best Wishes, Brendan. PS Hey, the big day is coming fast. I really wish I could have been there. However, I have been doing my homework and there are flights from Belfast to Birmingham every day so getting there is not an issue if you decide to have another go next year.
@MikeWaldt8 жыл бұрын
I wish you could have made it too Brendan. In answer to your sort of question...all I'll say is....we have already talked about some new things for next year!!! ;) Cheers Mike

Brendan, good to see you back in action ( or I suppose on view ). Nice bowls and plates - now break out the welder and make the forks, and spoons, and knives.
@bmacwoodturning20358 жыл бұрын
LOL, I need to learn how to use the welder but my mates will show me that. I'm in the very fortunate position that I'm going to live forever because I simply don't have time to die.

Hi Brendan, It's really good to see you again my friend, I hope that you're fit and well. Oh... I love those, I like the fact that they are different size's and profiles. If my kid's were young again and not eating their meals, I would have definitely introduced them to the Goldilocks and the 3 Bears dishes and plates! Any child would eat their meals then! Their name on the plate, something to save and show their Grandchildren. Brendan I can't thank you enough for sharing the video, they are stunning my friend. If I had a bigger lathe I would be trying to give them a go for sure, but I'll give the bowls a go. How do you turn off the tenon after everything has been done? Thumbs up Big Time from me👍👍👍👍👍 Cheers Andy
@bmacwoodturning20358 жыл бұрын
Thanks Andy. I made a jam chuck which is just a piece of veneered chipboard with a piece of router mat glued to it. When I have finished the inside I mount the flat plate on the lathe and press the bowl against it with the tailstock quill. That's why it's important to leave the centre mark on. I have a bowl to reverse tomorrow so, when I set it up I will make a video to show you exactly wheat I do. It allows me to remove most of the recess and then I take the last little nub at the centre off with a drill and 80 grit paper. Simple but effective. I have all the stuff to make a vacuum chuck, gast pump and all, but the jam plate is so efficient I haven't bothered to make it yet. I'll fire the video up tomorrow afternoon. Best Wishes, Brendan.
@PENFOLD19628 жыл бұрын
BMac Woodturning The veneered chipboard chuck is a brilliant idea! I hadn't thought of that. I was thinking around the idea of using the hot glue gun, your's is a much friendlier answer to the problem, and seeing your finished results speak for themselves and really encouraging. The jam plate is more appealing personally, I could also save it for later projects. The video would be very handy but you must be really busy! I will understand 100% if you can't make the video 👍 I'm chuffed that you have taken the time to reply to my message, a big big help to say the least. Take care my friend. Cheers Andy

Fabulous Brendan. It's amazing how the seemingly simple shapes of the pieces belies the work involved! I would love to see a video on how you turned the plates. You mentioned burning at one point? Is that to help seal the wood? I have not done anything food safe as yet but this has me tempted! My morning porridge would be great out of one of these with a wooden spoon :) When you showed the third bowl, I thought, WOW! that has an almost honey glaze and the next minute, you said the same thing :) The same happened with the seaside plate, LOL. The colours in plate 1 were amazing, greens and golds in amongst them. Just lovely and thanks for sharing.

Thank you Ian. I have a few more to make because the lady took them all and ordered 4 more. I won't do a video on these ones but will try later. I need to learn to edit but I find sequencing difficult to learn because of medication. I hate that because I was a maths lecturer and sequencing was my business. I can still do all the maths stuff, it's learning new stuff that is difficult. I bought really good editing software 2 years ago but then discovered I had to buy the instructions as well which was a bit of sharp practice, I thought. However, I recently discovered a series of tutorials on KZbin, by the manufacturer, so I'll sit down with those and make out a flow chart. Burning - I meant doing the pyrography and burning my name. No flames were used. As you said, the simple shapes are the hardest because you've nowhere to hide. There's about 3 hours in each piece by the time it's finished. A production turner would laugh at that but I'm not a production turner and I have had pieces fly off and hit the wall after having the finish applied to the outside when I've been hogging wood out so I tend to go easy. I can't see the subtle colours in the plates, just variations of shades of brown but they still look nice with the oil on. I like oil finishes but, if you ever give someone a piece finished with oil warn them not to set it on anything French polished or you will be very unpopular. Best Wishes, Brendan.
@IanMaude8 жыл бұрын
Whatever you can achieve with video will be OK with me Brendan. We learn from the doing, not the editing ;) Thanks for the explanation on the burning and for the tip on French polished furniture! Sorry to hear the medication is a pain. I was on Statins until recently, because of high blood pressure, not cholesterol. They completely changed me. I) couldn't remember anything and I was on another planet and always worn out! I, of course, did not notice but my wife did and I stopped taking them. My doctor wasn't happy but I am now back to normal with memory and energy thank goodness! As for maths... probably best to not go there ;) Sorry I will not see you at Coventry but maybe next year? Ian

I have already investigated flights and it's easy to get from Belfast to Birmingham. I could fly to Coventry but that would cost £6500 in a private jet. i think a taxi from Birmingham is a lot cheaper. So,should it be on I will probably be there. Best Wishes, Brendan.

I vote for #1 and #3...hahaha. - I just came to look from your ( baconsodas) garden channel -I've always wanted to do wood working, lovely work. - Do you ever age fresh wood yourself? - How do you prevent the wood from cracking?
@bmacwoodturning20358 жыл бұрын
The lady took them all so that made me happy. It's always lovely when something like that happens. Splitting - the wood I used was dried slowly and then I turned the bowls and plates in 2 stages to try to ease the stress of drying when the shape was forming. I have had the pieces inside, in the warm, for 3 days and they are absolutely fine. It just takes a little patience.

Fantastic mate. I want to get an adjustable chuck for mine but I dont have a lot of clearance. Hows the garden?
@bmacwoodturning20358 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The garden's a disaster. I think I'm going to write it off this year, get a couple of lads with big machines in, redesign it, and start fresh next year. Time is an issue because I have so much turning to do. I'm enjoying myself but can't do everything.

Shame about the garden but like a phoenix it will rise from the mud ;-) maybe should have used hippopotamus not phoenix ;-) Crazy amount of rain here... Hope it brings me some gold nuggets.
@baconsoda8 жыл бұрын
Not a lot of rain here compared to England and Europe but a few short, heavy, downpours. Maybe all the rain will wash your gold down to some guy 20 miles away?

Very nice! Very nice, indeed. Hope the safety police leave you alone for using "mineral oil"-but you don't live in the State of California where damn near everything is known to cause cancer. . . Glad you stuck your head out so we know you're okay. Cheers, --Joe
@baconsoda8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joe. I think I'm safe enough considering doctors and pharmacists have been telling people to drink mineral oil for years to ease digestive blockages. Vets give huge quantities to horses and we all know that horses are a lot more valuable than humans. Mineral oil is known as 'liquid paraffin' over here so, maybe, I should use that name to confuse the less enthusiastic Safety Police? Best Wishes, Brendan.
@bmacwoodturning20358 жыл бұрын
Oh dear, forgot which ID I was using there. Brendan.
@joescarborough18 жыл бұрын
Hey! I don't worry about food or pharmaceutical grade mineral oil for the reasons you give. Then again, I use real butter and refuse to purchase any thing advertised as "gluten free". But the safety police don't seem to possess or allow the use of common sense-though I haven't seen anyone suggesting avoidance of candies coated in shellac. :-) I always enjoy your videos. Thanks, Brendan. --Joe
