Things to know about this piece, it's probably one of the saddest pieces of music EVER written. It incorporates every emotion into such a short amount of time and its pure genius. This piece moves me in ways no other piece can and I am a young classical musician. It's incredible that a single human being was able to pour out his soul in such a way.

Barber's Adagio for strings has to be the saddest piece of music ever written. It was also used in the movie The Elephant Man. Brings tears every time.

The work was given its first performance in a radio broadcast by Arturo Toscanini with the NBC Symphony Orchestra in 1938 in New York. The composer also transcribed the piece in 1967 for eight-part choir, as a setting of the Agnus Dei ("Lamb of God").
