I'd rather hear 78s than a CD 44KHz sampling kills musicality, I told my 78 collector friend to use 48 for archiving, and I demonstrated full analog sounds way better than listening to the USB out from the Rega mini fono connected to the computer then running sound card out to the amp

Heard of bachisback? Seller on eBay R.Peter Munves. Look him up, he worked for RCA and collected the entire RCA 78rpm catalog. Mr. Munves assured me that cactus needles and any organic means used in place of steel needles leaves deposits within the groove left there because of the heat from the friction of the fast rotation of the disc. That is why HMV records used within the UK and then played with a diamond stylus are un-listen-able. The organic matter in cactus or wooden needles are fibers burned into the shellac and never come out, forever leaving their mark of distortion of sound.

I wonder if some type of lubrication would stop the burning in of wooden styluses.
@The1920sDandy7 жыл бұрын
Interesting to see someone tried it :) You can use thick wooden knitting needles as well, they might be a bit stronger as well. I got a clear tone with them, with or without the gum arabic treatment.

OMG, man - that is a helluva lot of work you've described there. You can get literally hundreds of brand, spanking new steel needles for less than ten bucks. If new needles were expensive, I could understand going to all this trouble. But they're not!
@victorola95797 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, Actually, it was no work at all. I had already made the rig for cactus needles (see other video). My point is two-fold: One, if you have an old gramophone with no needles you can play it instantly with something everyone has, a toothpick. Steel needles have to be mail ordered. Second, there is far less possibility of damaging your record with a toothpick than a steel needle. I would much rather have someone use a softer bamboo toothpick than an old worn steel needle (something I have seen many times). Hope this helps!

I always thought that wooden needles sounded the best on these old acoustic machines. The metal needles just end up sounding too tinny for my tastes. While the wood on the otherhand kinda dampens the sound so it sounds more clean, and less harsh.

I understand that waxing provides lubrication, therefore less wear. However, I'm concerned about wax residue getting transfered on the record.

Stylus. The heavy reproduces measured in ounces will damage them. Use a light pick up.
@robgrano68142 жыл бұрын
Depends on if they were shellac or vinyl/styrene. Children's 78's from the 50's and early 60's were often the latter. General rule: styli are okay for shellac, but steel needles should be avoided on vinyl and styrene. Back in the 50's and 60's record players often had a two-sided stylus that you could flip to play either 33/45's or 78's.

Why can't the 78RPM records be played by just a normal record player?
@marcrhsn7 жыл бұрын
They can. You just need a player which has the 78rpm setting and the right stylus in the cartridge. The groove on a 78 is wider, so you need a larger diameter stylus.
@djsndcx7 жыл бұрын
Oh, so it's just about the speed and groove inconsistencies that 'modern' vinyl records don't have?
@jacksong62269 ай бұрын
Sorta the groove is 3 times wider on average to a normal LP of 45, so you need a thicker needle, the cartrige has to be able to acomodate that needle, the players has to be able to spin at 78 and preferably 80rpm and a few other speeds, and it has to be wired for mono, other than that defienently :)@@djsndcx

The wax residue from those wax infused needles just coats the grooves of the record with WAX. It's basically lining the entire recorded groove with muck every time. Your idea of a wooden needle is admirable ... however.... know when to stop. You created an alternative needle .... but coloring it and soaking it in wax is redundant and does nothing to improve the practicality of it .
