Great lesson Nate. I appreciate you stressing the fact that what we're hearing played by current players has a history that they're ingesting, dissecting, and then building upon.

Thanks for posting your videos. After decades they have inspired me to get back on the kit and learn how to play again. Your teaching approach is great.

such a cool lesson and explained with a lot of clarity and sense of humor. Nate since I discovered your videos I have been inspired again on drums and erased the "what to practice" eternal question out of my head. Keep doing this oustanding job man!

This is so inspiring. And timely, since Marcus just destroyed my brain again with the new Vijay Iyer album coming out last week. Your stuff goes so far beyond just showing how to play a lick or a phrase. The information you share is kind of like a nudge through a doorway that encourages me to go as deep as I can with the ideas. In a sense it reminds of me "the advancing guitarist" by mick goodrick ( guitar is my primary instrument). that book balances information, humility and humor in a way that provides boundless inspiration for the journey of learning this music. Your videos strike that same balance and offer the same jolts of inspiration. Thank you.

I'm amazed by the way you're able to integrate deeper concepts and history with practical licks and cleaner takeaways. I'm more of a weekend/wanna-be drummer, but I get so much from your lessons on so many levels. You're a gifted teacher (and as someone who has been training teachers professionally for many years- I'm not just blowing smoke). Great stuff.

At the risk of pushing you further into Rational Funk territory - a tihai is really any little rhythmic phrase that is played three times ("ti" = 3) and resolves on "saam," which means the top of the cycle, but we can think of it as beat 1. This is not to be confused with the Hindustani composition Chakradar, which is a much longer composition that is played three times before it resolves on "1." So, if we want to make this neat little cel into a tihai, we'll want to move your three beat phrase to the end, and play it three times, so it resolves on 1. The rules here are a little flexible - that little tail (ride snare hi-hat) that you added can be omitted on the third repitition. This is handy, as it makes the phrase 8 beats long - easy to use in 4|4. And, it just so happens to be what you played! Great lesson. I needed a refreshing way to get my head out of books for a little bit and all these exercises are really helping me out.

Great lesson Nate! I have a question, at the first lick, you are using lrrl at the snare, is there any reason why you do this? Is it sound better? Isn't it easier and more useful to play it llrl or lrll?

Awesome lesson, as always; I like your "mind hack" approach to drumming and find it easier to work with and internalize these small chunks of rhythmic ideas. Also: I don't want to turn this into an equipment forum discussion, but what brand/model hi hats are they? They have a really great sound...

What is the sticking for the "4/4" pattern at 8:43? It sounds like (in eight notes) SKTKS(rest)KT. I could be wrong but wanted to confirm that. Thanks for the vid!
@pablomarin-marquez10284 жыл бұрын
Yes but the second snare hit also has a tom hit at the same time So its L-K-R-K-LR-rest-K-R
