This lesson was so demonstrative - doing the comparisons individually and then playing them together. Everyone who wants to play percussion should watch your videos. Thank you. And youre a great teacher - No unnecessary blather. Just what we need to learn to do.

Great! So in the choruses, the tambourine is used similar to the shaker but its louder.

Good thing this video came up. I was really looking forward to playing percussion in our worship songs this March. I am particularly interested with the bongo part. I have played a beatbox a few times with them and a drum kit one time in the chapel but never a bongo which I only just started playing a few weeks ago. What we're doing is not a rock setup at this point but a basic acoustic setup with an acoustic guitar and singing. I need some practice before I actually start playing with them. The shaker part is interesting. I couldn't find my own shaker so maybe I'd just fill a bamboo or an empty coconut shell with small pebbles or BB gun pellets just to test how that works LOL.

The problem is a shaker can easily overpower the sound of a hi hat which tends to be a better sounding instrument in most songs. People should be discouraged from cancelling out the sounds of other percussion just because they happen to have a shaker in their hand and also be aware that shakers should not be used in any song just because it happens to have a rhythm to it. Shakers tend to make songs sound too much the same when they are used constantly regardless of the style of the music.

Tamborine through the entire song. EVERY SONG. EVERY TIME!! 🤘
@jamesholmes99403 жыл бұрын
Great ideas. Balance is a problem with sound, however. The shaker and tamb. could not be heard over the background music which was the point of getting a handle on how to compose with a group. The toms were excellent. Great work. Thanks.

What about a similar video for jazz band music, specifically big band?
@WORLDDRUMCLUB6 жыл бұрын
Sure - I can do that. I've played with lots of Jazz and Swing music. Same basic principles apply. Just need to keep it simple and play in the POCKET. With Jazz bands, it's also important to know the tune so you can accentuate the melody and hits.

👏 👍 Hey Kalani! Is there a reason why you haven't added the "musical spoons" to your percussion repertoire? It's amazing how two ordinary simple, inexpensive kitchen utensils can to transformed into a veritable percussion instrument that replicates the sound of tap dancing shoes. In fact, musical spoons could have been used in lieu of the bongo drums in this gospel arrangement. 😖 🎶
@Adrian-dl9nb6 жыл бұрын
This was really useful! But it made me realize that none of my shakers can make these traditional sounds, since they're not cylindrical.
