Merci for this. I talked to my daughter and she is very busy but hopefully in the next two weeks she will be able to film me for my self treatment for the pianist. Great tips about the bench. You talked about stability, the first treatment/exercise I gave to my patients is a stabilization exercise for the low back, and it fits in perfectly with this video. You can do an isometric exercise (contraction without movement) in this position. With the feet fairly close together, push one foot down into the floor for five seconds as you're breathing out. It's as if you wanted to stand up from the sitting position, but there is no movment. Then place the same foot against the other foot and push against it as if you wanted to push it away, again breathing out as you push to not build up abdominal pressure. This is the start of my treatment for the low back to strengthen the gluteal and abdominal muscles. I tell my patients to do this once a day. They laugh when I say that, but it's better to do one than zero. I do it first thing in the morning, but you can do it as you start your piano learning, and maybe at the end. It isn't an exercise where you need to do it ten times in a row. But doing it once often is better. More to come.

I will be sending you my video soon, but there might be a cure for your little finger problem. I use simple muscle testing and orthopedic and neurologic techniques to help when there are weaknesses. Stay tuned (LOL).

This tutorial is what I call a "Keeper." Because I have watched it multiple times, and find my knowledge level growing in leaps and bounds with every review. Lisa, thanks for making what could be viewed as boring, into an enjoyable learning experience. Your UTube channel is the perfect complement to my online Pianote classes because here I can easily select what I'm interested in learning more about at any given time. Also, a special thank you for the tip on how to view the "Pinky Finger" flying up. Because when I started working on the "Hanon Exercises." That was one of the focal points of that class. And I have been arguing with my Left Pinky and Right Pinky and Second finger ever since. This lesson has taken the stress out of that argument. I will continue to work on it, but after hearing you speak to this issue. I can stop being angry with the digits. Coach... You are a Rock Star in the Piano teaching industry. Many thanks for all that you do to help us learn.

I'm happy to repeat scales in their original 'boring' format ... but your ideas for varying them take my attitude to happy+ ... broadening the enjoyment horizon so much more... your talent for teaching makes it easy to follow, your reminders that (as easy as you make it appear) even the basic piano/hand coordination can be challenging for beginners strengthens perseverence ... Thank you

0:10:56 hi Lisa. This portion is where I hit a wall. And it's not because I cannot perform the exercise. I am challenged in doing it with the precise dynamics. Like many other pupils practicing at home I am working with a portable arranger keyboard rather than a digital piano. And as you might well know those are touch sensitive rather than weighted. So I can go from fortissimo to pianissimo easily - but not so readily in the other direction. So that part of the exercise from that aspect is challenging. But the rest of the video I had a pretty good time with. I still think there's a chance that I can get pianissimo down it's just going to be a little bit more difficult with the kind of keyboard that I'm working with. Thank you so much for this tutorial

As a total beginner, I prefer to learn scales on my left first and in descending order because the combination is usually weaker. Go slow and try keeping your eyes closed. For those wanting to know about finger positioning, a couple free apps that I’ve found to be incredibly useful are (1) Piano Chords and Scales (2) Piano Companion. Both of them also include matching chords that sound good with each scale. They cost extra to unlock all features, but even without, they’re more than adequate. I’m just using the free version.
