Just adding my stupid self experience to this. I had thought that squeaky toys were a 'taught' experience to dogs and so, I didn't buy them for my Sally. But ... after a few walks where she activly stole them from another front yard and brought them home, I know now, that there's something about squeaky toys that is dog catnip. Sally (fox terrier cross) would organise that we walk home by the road at the end of the street, run ahead when she got to the corner (before me) go in the open gate to their front yard and come back out head down, shoulders scrunched and walk really fast to our open front gate. It wasn't until I noticed many small squeaky toys in the long grass that I figured out her ploy. So, yes! squeaky toys is a dog thing. And I bought her, her own from then on.

Dogs play for two reasons: social bonding and hunting practice. A lot of dog toys are shaped like animals because they trigger the dog's hunting instinct to chase and pounce. The squeaker is meant to mimic the squeaking of their natural prey, being mostly rodents and other small mammals.

Bunny and Otter are big sister and little bro in every sense of the words both in human and animal context. Love ,annoyance, reliance, fun they are family. Humans do not have a monopoly on relationships complex or otherwise. We are merely different species with different languages navigating through our ever developing and intertwined worlds. When I counsel at work and ask “ where is your joy?” The amount of times depressed people say my dog, my cat or whatever pet they have I have to conclude relationships with animals are significant ,it’s tangible.

Are people really mistaken their play-fighting as hatred? I guess they've never owned dogs and don't get the dymanic of how dogs often play. They pretend to fight and pounce on each other because they're acting out their animal instincts in a safe way. You'll notice that they'll often take turns. "I'll get you, and then you get me!" The fact that they're not actually harming each other shows that they're holding back. They could legit bite each other and cause significant pain if they wanted to, but they don't. It's like they're saying to each other, "I could hurt you, but I won't. You can trust me."
@kristineteall3682 жыл бұрын
My mom use to always think my dogs were fighting when they played hard with the usual growling, mouthing and wrestling. Which was all the time. She really freaked out when my GSD would put the cats whole head in her mouth and slobber all over it, while the cat sat there and did nothing. Some people just aren't use to seeing the behavior so to them it's extreme I guess.
@ValeriePallaoro2 жыл бұрын
Actually, there are not a lot of posts about 'just playing' so, people prolly can't see the dynamics. A word over/voice over by Mom that says Bunny loves Otter seems to be wishful thinking if there is not actual footage of it, yes? This visual was very helpful to me.
@Usortert2 жыл бұрын
I think it is more when Bunny is not wanting to play right NOW, and becomes a smidgen withdrawn that some people takes it as dislike. It is not uncommon between humans either, to take a short term "rejection" as a signal of a friendship is over, while the other person might just be busy, or wanting to go for a walk on their own now and then.
