dirigibledeplomo I think this was perfect. It's both scary and insane. The first people to beat it without all the guides and whatnot must literally be insane since they thought "maybe if I walk these amounts of steps and talk to the game with a microphone, something will happen". And the crazier thing is, something does happen. It rewards your insanity and dumb ideas. None of this makes any logical, practical, or even game sense, but it's the only thing that works. And you're walking through the same hallway over and over again, looking for something new, something that will require the same insane mind to pass.

As a guy that never played a single silent hill and any kojima games at all, I thought this was a genius move to release something like this. You don't see playable TEASER for games every days, it was pretty good looking, it was scary, it made a lot of people on the internet talk about it to figure it all in a similar way as the messages from dark souls and of course it revealed something a lot of people wanted.
@Valtieldan10 жыл бұрын
FFS This is NOT A DEMO. It was never presented as a demo. It's STATED at the end that it DOESN'T represent the game AT ALL. This was a Playable Teaser that was pretending to be just another indie game. THe gameplay has nothing to do with the actual game. IT wasn't made to be a good game, it was made to be a puzzle to be solved by the internet collective, and that's what happened. And faster than expected. This wasn't made to appeal to everybody like a game, it was made to entice a limited number of people who like to solve ARG puzzles, which this is in spirit. Yes, it can be tedious if you play alone without internet help. That's the point. THat's what made people get together through twitch and forums in the first place. And they loved the experience of "solving it". Bashing Kojima, Del Toro or Sillent Hill because of this is completely unfair. This was a special thing for a certain public, and it worked wonders. tl;dr: not a game, made to be solved online with people helping each other, people who did it liked it, people who just played by themselves and quit didn't. Not a basis for judging the next Silent Hill game or the director. But I guess since the gang dislikes BOTH Silent Hill and Kojima, the game will never have a chance anyway. It's just sad for me. :[
@nickv12127 жыл бұрын
Valtieldan I think it fits the idea of going crazy and Silent Hill in general so well. Insanity is doing the same shit and thinking something will change, afterall. And what do you do throughout the game? Walk through the same hallway, staring at the same stuff and thinking something will change. You literally have to think "maybe if I walk 20 steps and plug in a microphone to talk to the game, something will happen". And something does happen. The game rewards you when you think like a crazy person. Those who were the first to beat it before there were guides might literally be insane.

Honestly, I think that this teaser wasn't cryptic enough with its puzzles. This was supposed to be a huge enigma that had people lost in the dark for, at least, days trying to piece together everything and reach that glorious conclusion. A hour or two after the game went up, people had already reached the end. That's too easy in my book.

First off I have not seen this playthrough, or any playthrough, of P.T. But as others have said Fraser did not really like Silent Hill 2. He didn't piece together things, that the game presented to the player, and when it was explained to him via chat he was fairly flippant about it. He doesn't like a lot of games that they have played on the show, that others did enjoy. Which I have no problem with. Everyone has their own tastes. My problem has always been with the attitude of I can't figure this out or accomplish this task so therefore it's bad. We saw it when he was playing Ocarina of Time where he wanted to be told where to go at all times. We've seen him just shit on games but then on the few times where he does a 1 on 1 with the audience he's much more measured and articulate. So does that mean he is being absurdly exaggerated for the viewers? If that's the case then I hope they aren't coming for his actual thoughts on this stuff and are coming for the spectacle. Actually that's not fair. How about coming for the spectacle first and thoughts second. Then there is the chat. Though in truth it's not just this chat but all communities that have focused themselves onto one person or group. They develop a sort of group think that I suppose shouldn't be all that surprising. I've seen at least one instance where Fraser and the gang are coming down on something at the beginning, with the chat following suit, only to end up being positive and again the chat all of a sudden doing the same when nothing about the game had changed.

I honestly don't understand people defending this. Literally everything up to and including the red halls was fine, examine the hall, look for differences, examine said differences, but that ending hallway seemed to toss that idea that built throughout, out. Even just in this we see a random picture on the wall, a random roach, and just walking around trigger a laugh. Plug your mic in and scream? really? how do you know that wasn't just random coincidence? who would think to try that and why? From what I've read some people have finished without getting the laughs to trigger. No consistency, no clues, no rules? That sounds more like a bugged/glitched game then a puzzle.

honestly chat didn't give enough guidance here, i felt like you would've enjoyed it more if they didn't leave you wandering around for so long. but chat's mentality of "don't give hints unless they ask" doesn't really work with a game this intentionally obtuse, that was meant to take the entire internet days to solve. like unless Frash and Beck are Einstein levels of smart, it wasn't going to get solved without hints. and then even when chat was giving instructions, they weren't very good at it. that looping hallway part in particular where you have to find the hole in the wall, they explained it really weird.

The reason they made it so tedious near the end was because they didn't want people to see the ending quickly to find out that it was Silent Hill (Kojima said this in yesterday's interview). They intended for players to work together for weeks to get the ending but admitted they underestimated people when it was beat on the first day. Does it justify how tedious it is? Nah, but all in all it was a cool little teaser.

***** well it's free, it's NOT a demo, it is a game reveal, so it is actually a lot more respectful to gamer's than just releasing a shitty image, or a thrown together trailer, we need to see more things like this, it has nothing to do with how the final game will play, as it will be traditional third person...with possible first person parts (maybe...) I personally can not wait for Silent HillS to be out, and for more upcoming games to have reveal teasers in this way, rather than the traditional "here's the logo" or "here's the first 20 minutes of gameplay" don't get me wrong, it's not going to be for everyone obviously, you are not a fan of the series as you said yourself, so these puzzles won't be your thing, nothing wrong with that. there is a reason why you can't open doors...(nothing is real...it's only a game)

I can understand why they were upset past the 30 min mark because some of the puzzles would be extremely hard to solve without the internet, but some of them were pretty obvious. The whole point of this teaser (teaser, not DEMO.) is to portray how shitty some indie games are with the puzzles such as pieces in a menu and storyline. For example this quote from the ending. "Dad was such a drag, he'd always eat the same kind of food, play the same kind of games, and then one day he goes and *kills* us all! He couldn't even be *original* about the way he did it." That quote right there is pretty much how the story of many indie games are written out, and is an obvious insult to indie games. The game is *MEANT* to be total bullshit with the puzzles and is only able to be completed through community effort. Besides all of that it's a very good teaser with atmosphere and I think that guy went bit overboard when he started ranting about the game's puzzles, I mean come on, he spend 15 minutes trying to gouge out a painting, despite a GIANT BLUE X ON THE SCREEN.

I gotta check that out! I remember when I was a kid and spent hours trying to figure out a part of a game. That was something that happened every now and again. Today everyone expects to speed run everything. Fraser honestly pissed me off this episode. He kept trying to compare this to other games/puzzles. I would say this doesn't fall under the formula of other games which should cause you do to different things and experiment. If you do the same thing over and over again and no progress is made it's probably not going to work if you do it again.

I was legitimately on edge for the first time in a long time during the first half hour or so. I get this now. This wasn't meant as a game. This was meant as a long term ARG of sorts, something people would spend weeks solving to be rewarded with the silent hill teaser. I never understand all the hate you get. I subscribed to this channel because you do MANY playthroughs and even watch trailers which is pretty interesting and surprisingly fun because I love seeing positive reactions for movies/games I am also interested in. Most of the time I enjoy your commentary and of course I disagree at times and for good reason, but I'm not going to respond in a rude manner. Unfortunately the internet can bring the worst out of people. I personally agree with you that this "demo" was chaotic in the sense that there no true logic in solving the whole puzzle. First and foremost this game is a playable teaser that has NO RELATION to the original storyline or overall, Silent Hills itself. To the people worried about it being 1st person. The main reason why it was 1st person was to protect the secret that Norman Reedus will be the actor that will play the protagonist. This is why even in the mirror you can only see your bottom half of the character. NOW there is a possibility that there can be certain moments in the game that you will play 1st person, like in Silent Hill 4, but most definitely (I think most agree) it should definitely be 3rd person. First the positive: I think it has a great atmosphere to it and I think that was more so the main point of the teaser. The small story about the murder of a family and the paranormal feel of it is very Silent Hill. The ambiance all around did have me at the edge of my seat (the first 20 minutes I played before getting frustrated) and the way you keep repeating the same place does remind me of a certain concept of Hell that things repeat over and over and not much changes no matter what you do or ends up bad. Same could be said about the idea of insanity. Critiques: The gameplay was sub par BUT I didn't really take it seriously because I think the controls will be immensely different when you play the final product of Silent Hills and will affect the gameplay in a positive manner. Now anyone who has played the Silent Hill franchise, KNOWS that rarely is the logic for solving some puzzles are random. In most Silent Hill games, there is a note you find, something written on the wall, pieces to collect to complete something, etc, to solve a puzzle. This though,there is no true understanding on what you need to do to solve it. Instead you have to zoom in on everything to get further in the game. Yes, there are some moments that make sense to zoom in, like the fetus or the writing on the walls, but these are obviously important things to zoom in because there in your view. But you don't understand WHY you have to zoom in on the fetus or writings on the wall to progress so imagine having to zoom in on the teddy bear that is on the floor in the corner. You just don't know, so you zoom in on every object you see to the point that it isn't "scary" anymore and if anything, becomes frustrating and annoying. Overall I guess I am not going to take this too seriously because it is a teaser after all and it hasn't change my mind on how excited I am for Silent Hills. If anything it only makes me more hyped for the game especially because the ambiance felt like good old Silent Hill. The psychological horror was there and I can't wait to see what Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro have in store for us.

I've seen both Fraser and Lirik play this and rage quit. I'm glad they did. To all the people hating on Fraser: it's admirable that Kojima wanted to create an experience that had to be solved through a communal effort. It's much more creative and ambitious than many other developers out there. The risk the guy takes for the sake of creating an "experience" before a game deserves a lot of respect. But to say Fraser doesn't "get it" is just plain wrong. Fraser gets it; the point is that it failed. The game is really atmospheric and well-paced until the very end where Kojima inserts really esoteric mechanics. Sure, they might be rewarding for some...the problem is all the tension that builds inside you disappears as you become familiar with the environment and the scares. "I had no problem my first time through." Based on the threads I've seemed on GameFaqs, and the other livestreams I've seen, most people really do struggle to figure out the solution. Regardless, Kojima himself said that the game was designed to stump the player. So, you're lucky you stumbled upon the solution, but your experience doesn't invalidate the developer's intent coupled along with the experiences of many other players. "Bu-bu-BUT YOU'RE MISSING THE POINT! IT'S NOT A GAME" Oh, I thought my PS4 was a platform for video games. But obviously that's not all it can do! So I'll go ahead and ask this: is it a game or an "interactive experience?" It doesn't matter. It fails on both levels. As a game it stops being fun (most people don't find staring at phones fun FYI). As something that's trying to immerse you it suffers due to poor pacing. I mean...obviously the pacing isn't poor once you know the secret, but that doesn't excuse a poor first impression. If the atmosphere still captures you on a second playthrough, then that's great! I wanna use a game that's close to my heart to illustrate an important point: Dragon's Dogma. It's an action-adventure RPG. Those of you who have played it may remember the escort mission at the beginning involving an Ox. This mission takes about 15ish minutes to complete. I used to speedrun Dragon's Dogma using the in-game timer. This timer tracks all moments of actual gameplay (it doesn't track time during pause screens and loading screens). With a max-level character and good optimization (and no glitches!), Dragon's Dogma can be completed in about 16 minutes...of game time. It takes about 45 minutes to complete in real time. That means that about two-thirds of Dragon's Dogma is spent managing inventory or waiting for a load screen. Here's the kicker: the escort mission still takes about 6 minutes to complete. So, essentially, nearly half of Dragon's Dogma is an escort mission. But that sounds ridiculous, right? It is. So is Dragon's Dogma a poorly designed game? Well, no. The first playthrough is going to take the vast majority of people 20+ hours. A 15 minute escort mission is a drop in the puddle. P.T., to me, is like Dragon's Dogma in reverse. P.T. is unrewarding and downright disrespectful of the player's time on his/her FIRST playthrough. And in the end, it's hard for me to accept that it can be fully appreciated on multiple playthroughs. Despite a clear understanding of the mechanics, the intensity of the scares is lost. So yeah, if you enjoy drinking your own piss, then have a blast! But it's silly to get upset when people don't like the things you like...especially when many people think it's pretty awful.

Seriously, is that a puzzle?" I get that the game is in 3D, and everything isn't laid in a way that doesn't convey all the information about the room to the player...but is stopping your forward motion, stopping EVERYTHING, to press an X button on random objects that have no context to the puzzle whatsoever to open a door that leads to the same hall way so you can just repeat the process all over AGAIN BECAUSE OF SOME SILLY OBTUSE RATIONALIZATION BY THE DEVELOPERS!? IS THAT FUN!? IS THAT WHAT SILENT HILL OR KOJIMA FANS WANT FROM A GAME NOW!? *ahem* Sorry, I lost my composure there for a second...

He's bashed Sonic and Kingdom Hearts plenty of times and outright stated that the only reason people like those games is because of nostalgia. There's NO reason he wouldn't do the same thing if he had a truly negative opinion about Silent Hill or Silent Hill fans. He's a dick, but he's an honest dick.

One thing that struck me as odd was how dark the game was for them. I watched it on other channels and it wasn't that dark. That hole in the bathroom puzzle wasn't even a puzzle, it was just too dark to see it. Other than that the idea of puzzles being: stare at certain objects until something triggers, is just not good game design. It doesn't feel like a puzzle, it's just an adventure game where you just try everything until something works.

Honestly, this teaser was the creepiest thing I’ve seen in a long time in video games. The atmosphere, sound, and visuals were excellent. Unfortunately, the puzzles and lack of direction really hurt the quality later on. Making this thing hours upon hours long wasn’t necessary at all. The first couple puzzles were fine, ’cause they could be solved eventually with further observation. The “red hallway and hole in the wall” thing would’ve been fine if only the hole wasn’t friggin’ difficult to find. And the last one…. oy. It’s just a series of random events that you hope will do something. No hints or clues, from what I could tell. Not great. Now, some people will be fine with that. Some people like the challenge and are devoted to sitting down and being completionists. That’s fine. More enjoyment to them. But, overall, this teaser really wasn’t made for a wide group of gamers, which is unfortunate. It’s super creepy and had a few neat moments. Just wish it was the length of an actual teaser and not a week long project. Would’ve been more effective if it was shorter.

Just played the teaser before watching this. I think everything was great except the last puzzles. The hole in the wall was absurd, the piece of picture in the menu was out of this world (not in a good way), and finally, the fetus giggles were just plain ridiculous. Even after giving up on getting to the end myself, I have to say I liked it. The atmosphere was awesome, the story disturbing, visuals were stunning, audio work was also spot on. I want them to keep all those, except the overly abstract puzzles. As I said to my brother, who was watching me play and had seen a playthrough before, and Fraser also pointed, starting from the red looped eye hallway, there is no indication whatsoever of what you are looking for. You have only to guess or get lucky.

23:38 "And through fog, dwindling awareness." It's German. I dunno about the rest that shows up later. French, maybe? Also, since I'm that far in, I don't know if this is the case, but "look behind you" could mean look behind a photo of you. It could also mean walk backwards. I have no idea at this point. Edit: After watching the whole thing, I have to say I'm a little torn. On the one hand, as people in chat said, if this is meant to be like a tech demo / ARG "just for fun", then I get it. I like ARGs, I've been involved in some and I love the convoluted puzzles and outside-the-box thinking they require to solve them. On the other hand, when you call something a "playable demo", people expect a playable demo, not random bullshit. I'm sure this isn't an example of final gameplay, but that's not good enough for a lot of the people playing this. Hell, I'm a Silent Hill fanboy, and even I lack the patience for this.
@nilesrock02410 жыл бұрын
It really wasn't all that tedious, outside that last bit at the end, but required you to put more thought in than most modern games, and it was attempting to keep you unnerved throughout that experience. Not a great for-the-show game because of that, granted, but it wasn't too bad - though the chat giving unclear/useless tips at times and Farshar failing to comprehend the goal (even after having it explained) in some cases accentuated the not-for-showness. TBH, found the Rogue Legacy show more tedious to watch than most of this (esp. since it was broken up into so many parts I kept having to constantly watch ads).

I'm sorry, but walking back and forth from one side of the hall to the other side of a hall four times and wandering around looking for small pieces of paper in barely lit corners and staring at them for several seconds is pretty damned tedious to me. :|
@nilesrock02410 жыл бұрын
LloydieLynn Welp, that's your opinion mate, and you're free to it. However, IMHO, walking back and forth took all of 10 seconds, if that, once you've figured out what you have to do (hardly overtly long/slow/dull), and the find-the-picture-bits part was exactly what it was supposed to be - that is, it was a find-the-parts puzzle that wasn't immediately obvious and wasn't just given to you ala sparkly-bits or other HUD give-aways, requiring you to actually spend time searching the (constantly unnerving) environment and thinking/experimenting in order to ID the puzzle and then solve it. Granted, some folks just won't be able to muster the patience to solve such an extended challenge without clear instructions in a shifting (and unnerving) environment, esp. for something they aren't invested in on a higher level. I found it refreshingly ambiguous, at times at least. That said, the last bit, where it supposedly just becomes a random wander-'n-wait situation? Became excruciatingly long/slow/dull, even for my tastes.

Okay, cut this negativity. I'm sick of the whole circle-jerk mentality here. The developers said that they made it intentionally difficult so they could expect at least a week until people complete it and force people from all over the world to collaborate in order to solve it. It wasn't meant to be a representation of what Silent Hills will be, just an incredibly difficult puzzle to get to the big reveal. I'm not a Silent Hill fanboy at all, but you gotta take it for what it is, it was meant to be solved with the help of others, because it all leads up to the big reveal. But even then I still enjoyed it even though it may seem random or difficult or tedious. Again, it's not designed as an actual GAME, it's a PUZZLE, and a very hard and unfair one at that.
@onlyrealnumber10 жыл бұрын
Why would Kojima think frustration and tedium would motivate people to play through to the end of PT? I understand the desire to get the community involved to solve the puzzle together but there should be enough elements for an invested player to solve it on their own, rather than just derping around from one event to the next. Psychological horror is dependent on immersion and change. The moment you force the player to leave the game for progression, you've failed on the 'immersion' aspect. If you can't trigger the next change, the player becomes desensitized to the 'horror' aspect. I'm all for experimenting with new ideas but forcing people to endure an ambiguous puzzle for a short trailer seems like a dumb concept. If this was changed to a linear sequence of weird events to reveal the trailer, it would have been a lot more satisfying to play through.
@Frexter10 жыл бұрын
onlyrealnumber This is not the full game, it is not even a real representation of the full game. It shrouds itself as an indie title and the gameplay is as follows. No one is being forced to play all the way, you're free to quit at any time. But for people who enjoy a challenge and enjoy piecing together the pieces whether it be random, logical or tedious either alone or together with friends or people on the internet it is a good experience. Really, no one's forcing you to go away from the game. You can just as easily put yourself into the shoes of the character because you really are stuck in an endless loop. It doesn't work however when you're actively complaining about the game and peering into a chat. Everywhere else, people are loving this, but here on this exact link, people are circlejerking each other in negativity. I don't even know how Kojima is, or any other instalments of the franchise, but I still believe this is an enjoyable experience for what it is. And yeah, there's less of a point in playing this when the big reveal has already happened. The secret is out. But by all means, people can still play and enjoy it to try and figure it out on their own.
@onlyrealnumber10 жыл бұрын
Frexter Normally people who download a game, demos especially, play them with the intention of completing them all the way through. Hell, the whole point of a teaser is to entice your audience into waiting for the full experience. If your teaser doesn't end or 'brick walls' your audience, are you teasing the product or just teasing the player? I like a good challenge too and I'm a major fan of the Silent Hill series, but when I got to the ending I felt like I stumbled upon it rather than solving a logical series of events. I'm not giving Fraser a pass either but you can tell that both him and Becky went into this excited and invested. If your show drags on for over an hour on a demo even with outside help, that seems like a major problem; a problem that goes beyond just a single entertainer. I liked the concept, I liked the reveal at the end, it's just the meat in the middle that reeks of poor execution. It's not being negative, it's being critical. I don't have it out for Kojima and I'm not defending this play through, I'm just speaking as a lover of games and this franchise. I know this demo doesn't reflect the final product but Kojima has a reputation for being a bit of a trickster. I can't help but feel a little concerned.

Turner459O The trial and error, from what I've read at least, was used to make the community come together to try and solve the puzzles, and to take a few days to delay an announcement (maybe to last until after gamescom?). They say at the end that it is NOT going to be like that as a final product, and people should really see this as an idea for what they want to do with atmosphere and scares. While I do agree that it probably would have done well as an ARG, I kind of think this was a really cool idea.

The game's tedium was deliberate, since Kojima said it wasn't meant to be solved alone. He wanted it to become a community effort. And he expected it to take the entire community at least a week to find the trailer. So trying to solve this demo alone without the internet is kinda silly. At least if you are not the kind of person who would normally go hunt these kind of super hidden secrets. To my knowledge, even the first person who solved it stumbled upon it by accident.

First of all, I am a huge fan of the original Silent Hill games, up to the the fourth one. I think this P.T. is absolutely amazing and I feel like it brings back the feeling of those older Silent Hills. What I find funny is that first and foremost it is a PLAYABLE TRAILER and not a full fledged game in which Kojima did a lot of RANDOM shit. Sure it is demonstrating the feel of the new Silent Hill game (which I really like personally), and may be frustrating for some of you that you are getting stuck and confused about what to do, but it wasn't meant to be a game you are suppose to beat. It was meant to be a PLAYABLE TRAILER that is random and confusing and people are getting extremely butt hurt over not being able to complete it successfully. I find it quite laughable honestly and cannot wait for the game to be released.

@leon902110 жыл бұрын
Did you forget that it actually was scary? It was supposed to be cryptic like the easter eggs in bf4 for example because developers know players can take a challenge on these days. With the help of the internet and other stuff. Lets look at it this way, if they didnt know that it would end with the silent hill teaser they probably would have thought it had ended when they died or bugged out and came back. Just because they knew it off of the internet they wanted to be able to complete something that wasnt supposed to be completed easily. For this they added the death sequence making you think that was it. So I would say that starting to play the game from at the stage of knowing what its going to contain is not fair to do. Also it was free so, whats the problem?

I knew I wanted to comment when you posted a video after watching live last night. So initial impressions just based off of the stream from last night. I started out very very skeptical because as a Silent Hill fan I've been burned by Konami a few to many times it's almost as bad as Sonic at this point, but that opening 30 minutes or so sold me so hard. Then I thought Kojima was insane when the part turned red and you had to find the hole in the wall. And then everything with the stupid picture and the phone was just obnoxious at the time. Now having the day to stir on it and watching the Giant Bomb Quicklook which was also blind. It was done in a style much better at getting the player (Patrick Klepek) in the mood to be scared. The opening was about the same the time to press x to gouge out the eyes felt shorter, but I think this was more so because I knew what to look for as it also took him a good amount of time. The red area though stood out to me for how much brighter and easier to see things like the hole in the wall was clearly visible without the game feeling like it was brighter then intended. I know for you the gamma was maxed, but it stood out to me as odd and made that section feel less poorly designed as it took him shorter then the gouging segment. Both of the playthroughs gave me a fairly good outlook I fully believe that the teaser is up until the screen turns yellow with all the writing. At which point it's more of a post game in which Kojima expected the solution to be difficult, and obtuse. I think the teaser portion is actually wonderfully executed and the first horror experience in quite a while that felt atmospheric for me and truly filled me with dread. I think it could have been a bit more obvious in it's direction without ruining the experience, but I still think the experience is good. The post game section when thought of as such I think is to easy for what Kojima was going for. Kojima wanted an experience that would take days to solve with the internet working as a team to crack it. As it stands people aren't sure what makes you "win" except that the more time that goes by the better people are able to hone in on the exact process to do it. tl;dr I think it's pretty good until the yellow. Your game was to dark I don't know why seems like they should have let you increase the gamma more. I think it should have been more obtuse for what Kojima wanted as is it's just an awkward middle level of difficulty.
@TheDaltonSmith10 жыл бұрын
I really don't understand the logic of saying "This is not meant to be representative of the game! it's just to set the mood!" When that is exactly what a trailer or teaser should do. If you're a creator of ANY media putting out a teaser or trailer should be putting your best foot forward. Can anybody honestly call this Kojima and del Toro's "best foot forward"? Is this what we should expect from this game? A bunch of poorly, no, LAZILY designed "puzzles" and solutions to problems based on RANDOM CHANCE!? And if this isn't how the final game will be then what is the point in this even existing in the first place!? It is NOTHING but disrespectful of consumers and their time.

It's so unfortunate about the later parts, because that first half hour was amazing. I don't get cowed by jump scares, usually, but the atmosphere, between the general design, sound, intrigue, and overall mood in the house made those initial few make me nearly jump out of my skin. They made all the elements really work well together, and did fantastically at setting the atmosphere. Then, someone, I'm assuming Kojima, decided to get pretentious and make things obscure and tedious for the sake of doing so, and that really hurt, if not outright ruined, the effect. Hopefully, if you guys do Frightober again this year, the experiences will consistently be more like that first half hour.

Read about what this is (I'm posting a bit on this place in hopes Fraser receives some info he has to have missed) and you'll see why it's not really good as a game, but it was great as a marketing stunt (which it is). The moment the video began I knew they would dislike it because they were playing it like a normal game, already knowing what it was. The whole thing was about figuring stuff together online, not playing it like this.
@ETStudios110 жыл бұрын
Valtieldan That's not good game design OR marketing. I'm currently enrolled in an advertising curriculum, and can say with some certainty that if they wanted a good viral marketing campaign, the way to do that wasn't to create a way to purposely waste people's time and cause frustration. Which Kojima's on record saying was his intent. The idiom that any publicity is good publicity is no longer true, and making an experience that's intentionally frustrating and obscure is not a good marketing move for the real game. You know what could've worked? Making this all a video, played by someone who knew the game, and sharing that video virally. You'd get a better marketing effect, and be able to show the game at is optimum, as gameplay trailers tend to do. Getting people to waste their times on an intentionally frustrating experience is disrespectful to the desired market, and people's time in general.

It also shows pretty awful puzzle design, if for the most part you have to either luck your way into solving it or give up and go to the internet collective for the solution.

1:27:15 I...can't help but feel that there is a sense of passive aggression on Kojima's part here...

All I got to say in regards to this arguing is that Norman Reedus's hair is magnificent in the trailer

I really don't get the whole idea of the 'last puzzle'. The player has been in (essentially) the same exact room for ~+30 min, with minor changes. Why would a player start starring at the phone/mirror/clock/whatever if doing so before did nothing, and they have been given no indication that they will do something now. The puzzle doesn't make for a creepy atmosphere ether. As Fraser pointed out the player will drown out those eerie sounds as we learn they mean nothing. A better idea would be to make a good logical puzzle to finish the thing albeit without revealing anything. BUT doing this crazy set of actions, that sounds like those "Cheats" we all heard when we were kids on the playground leads to the "true" ending and the real reveal.

Oh boy, this is a great marketing tactic. Two polarizing groups shouting up Kojima's project to maximum exposure with simplistic efficiency. We have this tiny teaser getting Japanese gaming hipsters and entitled casual gamers angry at each other in the loudest way possible.-- it's fantastic.
