Dare: you said Metcalf's athleticism "can't be understated." Correct usage is "can't be OVERSTATED," i.e., he is SO athletic that one "can't" say so TOO fervently. Remember, "can't" (i.e., cannot) means incapable of being done. Thus, "can't be understated" means "it's impossible to UNDERSTATE how athletic Metcalf is," which is precisely the opposite of what you meant to convey. This is analogous to those who say "I could care less" when they mean to say "I could NOT care less."
