My absolute favorite troppe is 'oohh you have no idea of what you have gotten yourself into...' And then by mid-campain start to figer it out ✨

Some friends and I used to play Call of Cthulhu like this: Your character is basically you, you have the skills you have, and you have the stuff you have. You roll 1D10, and convince me what your skill level is. With this motif you can turn a simple encounter with a werewolf into an awesome game. My favorite session we played, the three characters never even met the monster. One of the players went outside to see what was on the roof, so the player and I ent into the basement and played a side session which ended with him the player running up the stairs screaming in panic, as his character ran back into the house screaming in panic. In a fit of huge paranoia they ended up attacking and killing each other.

I enjoyed how your voice shifted gradually more aristocratic and dubious while encouraging to BE the horror :D

You reminded me of a line from Methos to Amanda in _Highlander_... "You think it takes courage to do what we do: face another Immortal, knowing only one of you will live? YOU TRY BEING HER - knowing whatever you learn, whatever (...memory fails me, sadly...), its not enough: you - still - lose." And yes, that describes horror very very well. {it was the episode with the Methuselah Stone}

Then you got the Burt Gummer. Has never actually met a monster but as dreamed about it and is crazy prepared and not even phased when the big bad that is terrorized everyone shows up

I desperately want to run a Halloween One-shot for my group and this is very helpful advice.

Wouldn't being prepared and throwing yourself against Horrors negate said Horror? You're not really a victim if you hold your own.

It just depends on what you want to get out of a horror campaign! For the players who just want to feel really cool, like they're the next Van Helsing, being prepared is the way to go.

Buffy would be a monk, right? No armour, melee combatant, simple weapons...

Maybe way of the open hand?

I think Buffy is a pointy stick Kensai. The game has handled Martial Arts poorly, with the exception of the 1E Oriental Adventures supplement. Buffy is not terribly Monk-like in character. There could be an archetype for each major class that uses martial arts. Before 5E Kensai were martial arts Fighters dedicated to the use of one weapon, which I think describes Buffy better.

If you players are really into RP try powered by the apocalypse.
