Just a casual observation Garrett, when you try to work the ball left to right or right to left is usually when you get into trouble. At a golf demonstration when Vijay was asked how to work the ball, Vijay responded, “ Why do you want to work the ball mon, just hit it straight.” For 95 percent of us he’s absolutely right. I know sometimes you have to hit around objects but if you don’t have to just go at your target, period.
@flawlesscircus29182 жыл бұрын
This isnt accurate. 'Just hit it straight' is bad advice, most amateurs cant hit it straight, they have a natural shot shape. It is easier for them to work on increasing or decreasing their shot shape than to work on just hitting it dead straight. Professionals all have natural shot shapes, Rory plays a draw, Dustin Johnson plays a fade(which is opposite of his natural shape), etc etc, almost all the pros shape the ball on every shot, and most fade it or draw it almost exclusively. I agree that Garrett gets in trouble trying to shape the ball differently than he normally does, however thats kind of what hes supposed to work on and do if he wants to play good golf, the more shots he has in his bag, the more situations he can perform well in. it isnt like he hit a terrible shot trying to do something insane. If his misses were outrages, then yea probably need to work on it first. Honestly his game is good enough to mess around with shots when he is feeling creative. kinda silly to tell him how to play imo, specially since its his job to play golf.
@Real282 жыл бұрын
@@flawlesscircus2918 recent video frok Bryson said what most pros do: play your shot shape 99% of the time. Only try to work the ball if the shot requires it. Otherwise, you're asking for trouble. I the boys often get caught in the trap of trying to play the perfect shot each time. Like if a fairway goes left to right, they'll try to hit fades even though they all hit draws (minus Tig who has seen the light and moved his driver to a baby fade). And it's true, very few people can hit a fade and a draw equally well. You also said that everyone has a natural shot shape and that's what the pros say time and time again: play that shape until you absolutely can't.
@jamescole41832 жыл бұрын
I agree the low draw he tried to play wasn't the right shot during a match but is something worth trying to play during practice. my natural shape is a draw but when I practice I try to hit plenty of fades to help prevent larger draws during actual rounds under pressure.
@rowstyles2 жыл бұрын
almost every pro is shaping the ball on every shot. they are never "just hitting it straight." greens are guarded by bunkers, fairways are guarded by bunkers and hazards-you are always looking to be bailed out by a good miss. and to have a good miss you need a strategy and a shape.

From following Tiger closely through the years he always talks about releasing the putter blade as the key. Specifically knowing the point where your putter blade releases. Outside of a 1 foot putt you really don't go straight back and straight through. Most people are going to swing the blade inside to square and then back inside. So that's why knowing how to release the blade is vital. If you've ever watched Tiger warm up on the putting green he hits many putts with just his right hand. Some say as a right handed golfer hit them with your left. But again I think Tiger does them right handed to get the feel of his blade releasing from his dominant hand. I even remember a couple years back when Tiger switched back to his Scotty Cameron after trying something else for a bit. He said the good thing is I exactly know the release point of the Scotty. Also one of the best putters the last 20 years named Steve Stricker addressed the ball with the heel of his putter up in the air. I guess this helps with releasing of the blade. On a side note the best putter I've seen named Ben Crenshaw cut across his putts. He just had unreal tempo. Garrett and others should watch some clips on KZbin that give tips from Crenshaw and Brad Faxon. Maybe research releasing the putter blade. Would be nice if Grant covered the topic on the labs channel.
