It's vibrations from the stylus that create the sound. The electrical impulses generated are formed away from the stylus. So, no direct contact between the water and electricity. (Unless you meant the risk of water spilling into the system, in which case forgive my fastidiousness)

I love OB. I used to do this when I was a kid. Haven't done it in years but thinking on it I believe it would cause undo dynamic forces on the stylus. Work arounds would be to clean the vinyl first, prefrably with a wet cleaning machine. THEN you can also use what's called a "truncated" needle so it doesn't go as deep into the groove.
@russyJ20 Жыл бұрын
I've rescued many records like this. A good clean beforehand and this is the last step with a good dry using a microfibre cloth before putting back in the sleeve. Recommend!
@Brian-qg8dg Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that does seem to work with some records that have been wet cleaned and look amazing, but still have ticks and some pops. Then a play wet tends to clean them up nicely. Maybe increase tracking a bit. I've never tried anything other than distilled water. Also, my moving coil nor my moving magnet cart has ever had any damage. Of course, I don't do this all the time, and I do tend to blow dry on low heat the cartridge afterwards.

I do this all the time. O do not use anywhere near that amount of water though. A few drops is all that is needed. It really is not a big deal nor is it harmful. It can help save dirty records if you do not have access to an ultrasonic cleaner.
@ultimateweapon7275 Жыл бұрын
It works great. You can use record cleaning solution or make your own with Distilled water And 10% alcohol, 2 drops of dawn clear. dishwashing soap. It will dig dirt out of the grooves like other brushes won' t. OK if you got a $17000 cartridge maybe don't do it otherwise it's all good

As bounty hunter said: Read where water makes the stylus float slightly, and bounce around in the groove walls. In particular in the high frequencies, causing them to wear out quicker. I think it's like having the tracking pressure set too light. I wonder if oil would work better? Try air tool oil, marvel mystery oil, motor oil, transmission fluid, gear oil, and diff fluid, see how they affect the sound! Most of these have the capacity to protect the record from damage with a strong film while still producing the... wet sound!

It has been some two decades since I am done with records. I love them, I took the greatest possible care of them, they are nice to look at, but lets face facts, records are an old fashioned inconvenient and imperfect format. The CD is a much better means to enjoy listening to your favorite music. I currently sell my vinyl record collection to people who don't mind things like searching frantically for that tiny speck of sticky dust which caused that annoying ticking on a quiet part, or keeping an eye on the pussycat just in case she decides to jump on the turntable while a record is playing. Enough of this for me.

@@lsswappedcessna "uncompressed audio". Hmm, read up on mastering for records. In addition to adding the RIAA EQ, the source has to be compressed for the available dynamic range of records. The theoretical dynamic range of records is ~70db, while for a Red Book CD it's 96db. SACD have a dynamic range of 120db.
