Hey Sam, gonna try my first season of ice hockey next season, any tips? Also I was wondering right now I only have normal skates but are goalie skates a must, I have heard people say they are important and that it shouldn't be that big of a deal, so what would you think?

Definitely a big difference in skates. I would check out a local play it again sports for a decent used pair.

Its a huge difference, both in performance and protection. a goalie skate has different blades, the holder is different etc. if you just want to play 1 or 2 sessions on ice then you will be fine with what you have, but if you want to play multiple games I would definitely invest in some goalie skates. there are alot of goalie groups on facebook that sell used gear, some of them in great condition and price (because some people always need the new best stuff despite sucking hard in net…yes, Im those people)

This is very important. I would 100% get goalie skates even if you only play once a week. Besides the performance improvements, protection is a MUST. I get shots to my skates all the time and I am so happy I gave goalie skates as I probably would have broken a toe or my foot by now. You don't need the most expensive kind, but I wouldn't play goalie without them unless you do not mind the risk.

100 per cent you want goalie skates. I don't know if protection is much better now, boots look the same to me. The difference is the blade. Goalie skates have pointed edges at the front and the back of the blade. This allows you to dig into the ice to push/slide and then also stop yourself if your slide is too powerful.

I remember watching you at 214 subs. Worst part of your channel is the breakdowns. I get why you do it. But I mean sometimes you just get beat. One of the ones this game was about closing the 5 hole quicker. Sure. But had you closed that quicker the shooter had the bottom left side. Bro. You gotta say sometimes you just get beat!!! Worst thing a young goalie can do is try and analyze every aspect. They'll get in their own head.

Hey Scott, I appreciate the honesty. But to be fair, there is something to learn on every shot and goal. The idea isn't to overthink but to realize that even the slightest change can be the difference between a save and a goal. Like the 5-hole goal you are referring to, if I pulled my leg in quicker to seal the 5-hole, I would actually slide quicker and thus I would have covered the left side too. I know it is crazy to think that not every goal is our fault, and it is not, but that doesn't mean I couldn't have done something differently. Lastly, one of the keys to goaltending is repetition, so breaking down every goal helps remind me so I hopefully don't make the same mistake the next game.

​@ThePuckStopsHere totally agree with you. Some shots might be unstoppable but when your session is recorded. There is so much to learn from with every goal conceded that we could have done better to improve our chances.
