TL;DR: It's a somewhat improved software recreation of a Fairlight CMI, a really cool piece of audio hardware from the early 80s. The long version: It's fan software interpretation of the Fairlight CMI series II sampler & sequencer from 1982, but majorly expanded, as such it features in the current version 24 voices (I'm using an older version with 16 because the newer versions are Windows and Mac only and don't play nicely with Wine on Linux, the series II had 8), samples up to 10 minutes long (the series II had, well, whatever would fit into 16 kB at a given sampling rate), built-in effects like reverb, distortion, and bitcrush (the series II had none, but at that time most recording engineers would generally frown upon such things and would use external effects instead anyway), and you can get it for as little as $0 (or as much as you're willing to pay, it's a name your own price system), which is nice compared to the, adjusted for inflation, over $100,000 asking price for a CMI series II back in the 80s.
