I don’t think he’d be offended by me saying this, but he’s not got this good not from talent but literally thoooooousands of hours of practice.
@Tasmanaut

@@Cottage-Beats It's not offensive at all, you are actually being respectful. I become offended when people accuse me of having 'talent'. They think it comes easily and naturally, when it has taken me hours upon hours of hard work to polish something to a level that I'm willing to perform it for someone. Some people can't imagine being so dedicated to something and the work that goes into it, I guess. To be fair, a natural aptitude or 'talent' does help and sort of determines your ceiling, and this dude is on another level. I don't actually have much 'talent' at all, just a devotion for what I try to do. Most people could become fairly proficient at music, even without talent, if they were willing to put in the thousands of hours

@@Tasmanaut Many just confuse talent with passion. Your word really struck a chord with me (pun not intended). I very much dislike beeing called talented since my playing isn't a gifted ability nor even years of music lessons. I read sheet music on a beginner level. But I've played the piano nearly every single day for the last 5 years sometimes for up to 2 hours non stop. Simply because I enjoy it.

The best and most famous exponent of subtle whammy was, of course, Jeff Beck. Nobody - absolutely nobody, could use it like he did. I agree about how subtle Charles was with this piece. It would have been magical to see and hear him play with JB who was also known for his use of top bassists.

@Joe Norsworthy yes! I agree completely. That's why I think KZbin and Instagram have been such valuable resources for musicians. I can't help feeling like KZbin/Google/Alpha is going to screw it all up some day in their endless quest for continued financial growth. Publicly traded companies and artistic growth don't normally go hand in hand. I hope I'm wrong.

@@russell_szabados Why the hate on Jason Newsted? He's not Victor Wooten, but he was a terrific thrash bassist, great stage presence, and played his butt off 100%. I'm sure Charles was a fan at some point. Check out some of the bass boosted remixes of the '...And Justice For All' album, or Josh from The Bass Channel's playthrough of this prog-thrash classic. Much more than just 8th notes (although a great, experienced bassist will absolutely lay down 8th notes if that's what's best for the song), and no walk in the park! I guess we all have bit of musical ignorance in us, eh?

@CharlesBerthoud the final, climactic section starting at 02:00 is perfect. Of all possible melodic choices, you've used the best one for the song, and in my opinion the scoops are the final flourish to push it over the top. Repeating the progression on the piano, with scoops and all, is an inspired choice and gives an unquestionable sense of finality. Really, really well done.

And Wintergatan has a fantastic bassist but I feel like that type of outside the box, ambient, mood evoking style is perfect for Charles! I will say, i have been watching for ages, and think you are inmensely talented, like most people here do. But unbeknownst to me there was a further layer of respect i could feel. Hear me out, sometimes you see these videos where incredibly talented individuals such as yourself want to showcase a quirky device like this one, and they will, by any means necessary put it to display, often times creating a product that is more of a novelty rather than a genuine thought out creative work. When you do these things on the other hand, you make music first and foremost. Beautiful, engulfing phrases that captivate the listener. And to that creation you add the novelty, the freshness. I don't think either of the approaches are bad, i just love the way you take your time to make something special, and pour that much passion in each piece. Music shines when it's filled with emotion, and you certainly achieve that. Kind regards from a heartfelt listener, bravo.

Super impressive as always. The note selections in the solos were awesome! Very jazz. Great two/three part harmony too.

Somehow I knew you'd get one. You just gotta love how you can fix this anywhere you want. It doesn't even need to be in the instrument. I mean you could put in a chair and then use your butt to control it. It's quite ingenious a tool.
