Its actually possible to play dvds with a wii on older disc drives (well you cant watch them.). However, on newer ones its rendered impossible to play without homebrew tools.

I will mention that it isn't recommended to do this because the disc drive wasn't designed with this in mind, and it will make it wear out a lot faster. It's also only possible on disc drives made before 2008.

To be perfectly honest, this is actually probably one of the better uses of the Nintendo. We know I think the console has lost its charm as a console a long time ago and a lot of the good games for this is available on the Nintendo switch and Work better on the switch.

Funny video, but for anyone trying to replicate this video keep this in mind: The only Wii models that can handle DVD and CD playback are any Wii that has gamecube ports. The Wii Mini, for example, cannot play optical media besides Wii discs. This is because Nintendo didn't want anyone to make copies or use copies of pirated Wii games. If you do try to use a DVD and it doesn't work on your Wii, DONT KEEP TRYING TO PLAY A DVD! Continuing to play optical media on the Wii could damage the disc drive, since traditional optical media is read a lot faster than typical Wii games. In all seriousness, I do wish Nintendo kept the ability to play movies and CD media on the Wii. It's very convenient to use, especially if you're an 90s - 00s guy like me who still has stacks upon stacks of old movies in DVD.
