As a referee, I can confirm that Smii7y is actually correct in that the goalkeeper is considered by the Laws of The Game to be a defender, but that the actual wording of the Offside law states that an offside position is considered to be "nearer the opponents goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent". So while the goalkeeper is considered a defender, they have no bearing on what is or isn't offside, unless they are pushed up beyond a defensive player, therefore becoming the second-last defender
