My advice to other guitarists has always been to learn to be a chameleon. Be whatever the song needs you to be and make sure what you do blends in and is seamless. For faster songs, play aggressive (I'm not saying play metal or hard rock necessarily) and help drive the song with your rhythm section. For slow songs, make ambient tones your friends. Delays, reverbs, swells, drones, whatever can help fill holes in the sound is what you need to use. Learn how to play simplistic lead lines with your rhythm (Reckless Love has the easiest lead line to play while strumming out the chords) and do that in transitional periods like between chorus and verse. And the biggest piece of advice is to keep your foundation simple. You don't have to be a shred master or do anything complex. Less is often so much more during worship. Plus if you keep your foundational elements simple, it allows for you to build on more complex elements when the time is right and that makes for dynamic playing.

Basically: Diads, triads, open chords, ambience Also, I feel what would help the most is seeing how you create your sounds and what sounds you use for ambience and all that extra stuff that really makes the music sound good

Homie I just started playing guitar at Church. I was a guitarist for a local Spanish rock n roll band. But in minute 4:00 when you start saying of who influences us. Damnnn I'm like you right. I have a long way to go before I become a "worship" guitarist. Who I listened to coming up as a guitarist really matters. My influences. Etc. It has been a crazy trip "trying to forget all that and become a new guitarist....but after these couple of minutes I realized I cannot.....I am shaped of who I grew up with what made me get more into guitar. I'ma just have to learn how to incorporate it and become my own person as a church guitar player. Thanks dude keep doing this 🙏

My Brother in Christ, this was the best version of that Song i`ve ever heard in years! Absolutely amazing and Creative in the Meaning of Creation praises the CREATOR of all Things! In that Bridge part you did not "just showing of" but you gave an hint, of how great and wonderful and creative the inventor of all Music might be... GOD BLESS YOU, and i hope my bad english did not destroy my message of love and encourage for You too much. Keep on the good work for the church and be blessed beyond all understanding from crazy Germany!

Very cool. I am the only electric guitar in an otherwise full band. I work with incredible musicians and an amazing leader and feel so blessed to be in this situation. Our church uses one of popular subscription services to help musicians learn parts and this is fantastic for bass, drums and acoustic guitars, for example, but often there are 5 or 6 electric guitar parts per song! I use a LOT of the techniques you’ve shown to make sure the most important parts are recognizable to the congregation, but fill the needed space (where and when needed) - and my leader gives me lots of creative latitude that I try not to abuse 😂! This is such a valuable video for so many worship guitarists - we can’t all be in Elevation with 4 guitarists on stage at once!
@nicholascahillmusic47663 жыл бұрын
Great video! I do this a lot where I'm the only electric player. Actually recently for my church I was the only electric guitar player and one of the songs that we did was Champion by Bethel, and for most of the song I played chords, but when it came to the bridge part I played that lead line

This is a nice video. I used to play for a big church but we decided to branch out and start our own little church. we're 2 years in, made progress with the size of congregation but only my brother whos on drums and I on guitar or keyboard who plays. so i find it hard to play any creative riffs while also doing the rythm.

I love that you touched on inversions and chord shapes. This is something I’ve learned over time that would’ve helped me a lot as a beginner. If you continue this series, I think focusing on comfort positions you often play scales around and how you move between triad shapes would be helpful for people. Cheers!

Thank you very much for this video. I'm originally a bass player and started playing guitar at my church. I play better finger style than I do with a pick. I came to the conclusion that I don't have to sound exactly like the original versions and can make it my own. Thanks for stressing this point. Also, I'm a big on using the capo. So much truth to using different voicing on the guitar. Stay blessed!!!

I have found that the important part in my church is singing of the audience (Catholic). We say that singing is praying twice. So the music and singers at the front are there to lead people into worship via singing. If the audience is transported and sing it's a win. There is nothing like feeling the vibration in your chest, your head and hear it resonate with all the voices of others together.
@tjhannemann7 ай бұрын
Love this! looking forward to the technique lessons on maj/min triads, maj/min scales, maj/min pentatonics.
