40K originated in satire - it wasn't supposed to be taken seriously. The whole thing is a big joke poking fun at war games, sci-fi and British culture. The Orks are indeed based upon football hooligans. The Space Marines are mocking hyper-masculine action heroes, while much of the Imperium is mocking Britain's somewhat xenophobic attitude towards immigration and confident sense of national superiority. That's how it started, anyway. The satirical elements have been slowly forgotten in more recent decades in the name of making more money. Games Workshop still gets to cry 'its satire!' whenever actual literal nazis start adopting the iconography of the Imperium though.

@@vylbird8014 I'm well aware. I was just trying to joke that I thought the idea of orks being hooligans was a wild exaggeration, but that after seeing what hooligans get up to (real and in this game, I don't really follow football) it seems to be less a satirical joke and more of a statement of fact.

@@Tehsnakerer It definetely is, I just wanted to offer a german perspective as I thought that might be interesting for some. For the 400, you have to consider that they only checked games that released on disc in retail for a long time, and it also doesn't account for the amounts of game that had crazy cuts. Some examples: in the "no russion" mission in MW2, you couldn't shoot civilians in the German version. Many games released without blood or dead bodies (which was really shitty for games like cs were you don't have hit feedback except for blood), often the enemies were replaced by 'robots' (e.g. Contra). With what feels like the endless tides of Arcanum reviews the big video essay people are doing atm, it's so refreshing to get some video game jank explored again. It's always amazing to me just what Tehsnakerer can dredge up, I've never heard of most of the games that get covered here but I always feel enriched by the knowledge.

A remake of this game would be brilliant. I'm a lifelong Blackpool supporter (not from there though, I'm Scottish) and have seen the madness of hooliganism. Forget the Manchester derby, the West Lancashire derby is pure malice incarnate.

In terms of unit management and map complexity, the game reminds me of Myth: Fallen Lords. It's a pity that the map cannot be rotated to better see the units behind the buildings

Loving Green Street as a kid has become a qunitessential part of British life. I've yet to meet a single lad around my age who didn't love Green Street when they were a kid. I'm not even remotely into football and I loved Green Street as a kid. I knew I was gonna enjoy this vid but I love it even more with that core memory unlocked

Prime remaster/remake material. So many good ideas, such botched execution. The consciousness system in particular has AMAZING potential, very few games even acknowledge this aspect of combat. On another note, I remember seeing the disc copy of this game strewn about in many shops in my teenage years but never taking it seriously since many much better and newer games were available for about the same price. Now I'm proper kicking myself since even the SoldOut copy is ridiculously rare...

Hooliganism can trace itself back to Chariot Races of Rome. It got so bad during the Byzantine era that one team losing enough became the foundation of a full on rebellion that spurred a whole legion coming in and killing a whole gaggle of chariot fans. So it's not surprising that monarchs of the high middle-ages would outlaw a growing sport that brings out the same tendencies.

This game has had a room in my mind for at least a decade. I think i only ever had the demo version but it ALWAYS felt like no matter what i did i just couldnt finish or complete the 2nd mission i got, or even potentially the first , always wanted to know what the rest of it was. Thanks for the video and bringing back a very niche memory

One thing that I always appreciate about your channel is that it's the only consistently releasing long videos (as in, videos drops every 2 to 4 months) with consistently great script. Like, it's insane to me that you've been doing this for over ten years at this point and still haven't gotten stale.

I wish someone would make a turn based strategy game based on football hooligans now. have it be like x-com enemy unknown; where your firm is located gives you different bonuses, distinct classes for your squad of hooligans, maybe the mission types are based around riots while others are mediated firm vs firm challenges. Could also do something like the panic level system where the more mayhem you cause in a country eventually causes a police crackdown and removes that country from play, you have to weight up how much property damage/collateral damage you can get away with before it forces the police to crackdown.

This game came when I was 15 or 16 and it was a real challenge to come with innovative ways to kill the enemies.. you can drag them in to weapon stores so the shotgun owner could blast them or lure them towards the police squads. By the way, on level 8 there is a way that you can lure the enemies to chase you through the highway instead through the bridge. Your rat unit dies but it drags their whole squad on the highway and the speeding vehicles totally destroy them. You just have to wait for the right timing so you can cross the highway (not the bridge) with the fastest unit and it takes some trying. After that they start chasing you and you run right back through the highway. Love this fucken game! Played it like 5 or 6 times and it is different run every time... I believe there were rumors around that time to make a 2nd one, but even in these times the backlash was huge. Imagine such game in 2024...

Most stuff on the index is just 'no advertisement whatsoever. The games cd cover counts as advertisement' So in privately owned games stores you could often just ask for the stuff from under the counter. Wich will either give you a stack of porn or a selection of good games

The combination of visual design choices and the objective of the first level made me think this game was going to be "Lemmings but everyone is a drunken wreck." Also, "I GOT THIS GAME TO RUN, BULCH, I CAN GET YOU RUNNIN TOO" is such a raw fucking line.

Ah, hooligans. I remember playing this as a kid. It was the game that quickly got me in trouble for encouraging me to tell my teachers to "eat my shorts" and thus banned from anything of the sort for a good few years. What's interesting to me is that I could've sworn the second level was a bit different, because the second level I remember had you walking alongside the bus at the start, with it very slowly going from point A to point B, with barricades already in place and a LOT of police running around.

And funny little thing, I actually remember the supporters being surprisingly useful purely because they were bodies. Didn't matter how weak they were, damage is damage and extra time for stamina to get knocked down.

One of the most bizarre games to ever be indexed in where I live, right next to another pure bizarre British game which, while neither a violent nor a zombie-infested or in the worst cases, some raunchy Ecchi game with sexy minors, got indexed also, this being believe it or not, Little Britain: The Video Game.

Man... this brought back memories. Not of playing the game so much, but of fawning over pictures of it in an old PC gaming magazine back when I was a kid and _trying_ to play a demo for it, but having no clue what I was doing, as it starts you on the Paris level IIRC and without the tutorial... roight, thanks for that fuckwits... But I'd just finished GTA2 and thought Hooligans looked so cool. Reminded me of the old Commando's games. And holy cow, Republic: The Revolution sighting @ 5:01. I loved that game when I was 16ish, and have never seen anyone cover it. The soundtrack was one of my favorites. I specifically love Journey to Pugachev, Pugachev By Night,Journey to Berezina, and Buskers of Ekatarine. Journey to Pugachev though might be one of my favorite game songs ever really. Republic was obtuse and hard to get into/figure out. But once I did it was super fun. Shame it was utterly forgotten to time. I never understood why it got such a poor critical reception, it was a political sim game, but reviews were acting like it was supposed to be like the sims or something. But who needs journalists. Can journalists beat your political opponents with a baseball bat in an alleyway? That's the true path to a successful career in politics right there! Well thugs and pop idol endorsements...
@Tehsnakerer2 жыл бұрын
Sadly yet to get onto Republic, had it since I was a kid but never put the time in, hope to rectify that someday, and I got a fresh copy awhile back as a reminder to do it
