Well its situational imo. Its good playing safe if you realize one of the opponents have something going on by the discards. However if you are close to tenpai, then go for it but dont call riichi unless you have good waits and its high scoring hand. Thats the strat i going for most of the time but opting to backing out if situation goes danger factor. Just saying

Very well said. Push/pull, risk to reward, etc. Different names to similar concepts.
