Mike you are correct on connecting the 1-6-2-5 progression with "I Like Coffee" but you aren't connecting it correctly. The intended reference was "Java Jive": kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4GZeoinp6t7oNk

The register and the projection of the cello is a bit stuck. This is an honest critique. It's a basically a mid-range instrument. It's too mid-range to cut through a group, and too high to function as an adequate bass -- no body to the low end. It just gets lost in the mid-range mud of ensembles. Takes a lot of catering by other instruments to allow the cello to shine through. It just can't come through on its own for jazz. For solos, you have to do some serious EQ cuts of other instruments to make the thing be heard which shows how its versatility is limited within jazz contexts. Even trombones out perform cellos...that's saying something. At least trombones have some projection power. The end result for jazz cello really just feels like a lot of mid-range scratchiness...which is what DJs are already doing anyways.

Ray Brown did an album called Jazz Cello and he sounded amazing. If it ever doesn't sound good in a jazz setting it's the player not the instrument
