Nice one! Always wanting to put back into the community. So many have shared such great advice with me in the past.

Very interesting, thank you very much! I think people mostly like to dance. And for five years now, I have noticed the following trend. At parties, a live game on hardware is valued more than a flash DJ on a laptop. I think this is due to the availability and ease of use of computer programs to create music. And there is also a moment of price and, accordingly, the exclusivity of the iron setup. After all, it costs more than a computer, which almost everyone who came to get a charge of energy can afford

I use force and love it but in your case I would only do it if you dropped two other things. I was sitting there wondering what you could put in the rack as a sequencer to lose the laptop and bsp and es9 For myself I practice in headphones now so I can prerform in headphones. On force I have a high pass to the headphones to make it easier on my ears.

Great stuff Matt thanks. I especially liked your playing live advice. I have 20 years experience of DJing with vinyl and it always amazes me how different the sound is behind the decks in a club/venue compared to the studio. If you're not prepared for it it can quickly ruin everything. I'm interested if you also find this when playing live. I want to get out and play my modular.

Absolutely - I always tend to user in-ears though to ensure that the mix is what I consider 'right' - I cant rely on wedges and PA's. The sound person then has the job of just making sure it sits right in the PA with correct gain structure and some light EQ

Yeah, headphones are pretty much essential for playing live. If you’re playing at a festival, or a venue you’ve not played at before, you don’t know what monitor is in the booth. I’ve played venues with superb monitors in the booth, and I’ve also played in venues where there’s only a half knackered 8” monitor in the booth. Since I do love my low end, crap monitors are an absolute nightmare (because I can’t hear the notes I’m playing aside from the muffled bass of the FOH) Also having headphones on is a great way to ignore people. Most of the time when I’m playing, people want to ask me questions about my setup. Just playing is enough of a workload. Doing that whilst answering questions is a bit of a pain :) Also, if you’re looking for a 2 octave keyboard, I’m using the endorphines ground control (big thumbs up from me!). Given that it has its own power supply built in, you could stick it into an unpowered 48x pod case. Not sure if that supports polyphony though, so that might be a deal breaker. I’m a fan :) In terms of actually playing live, I just wing it and improv everything! I tune everything by ear on the fly (which is why monitoring is so important!) The last few gigs I’ve played have all been in surround sound. I’ve got a mono sum into my headphones for tuning mainly. I’ve played those sets both in the middle of the dance floor (which is actually super cool! The only time I’ve ever been able to hear exactly what the audience is hearing), and also in a booth (which isn’t quite as much fun, but you do have the benefit of being able to hear the rear speaker stacks!)

Great vid mate, some helpful insights there. Did my first gig with modular gear recently, and really enjoyed it. Looking to not over-complicate things while still having a bunch of fun stuff to play around with definitely appears to be key. The next Nerdseq update looks like it has some amazing routing options to change things up on the fly, so looking forward to delving into that for live.

No not at all. It was more about space and what I need to interact with when playing live. I don’t need to interact with the notes or arrangement. I need to interact with the sound. Nerdseq is very much at the heart of composing in the studio though 👍🏻

I recommend a voltage block since you too enjoy drawing in modulation with sliders. The only downside is that it’s a note sequencer so it’s range isn’t full but that hasnt been a huge problem. It actually doesn’t draw in like the variegate but I think it’s one of the best modules for precise modulation of 16 steps.

@matthsmatthsmatths

Me too! Something I struggle with. I just kind of crossfade between one track and another by taking out most of the parts and stripping it down to something simple, then add loads of effects on things and wish for the best. Somehow - that works!
