My six favourite things from this video 1. Hilary spins the wheel slowly and elegantly, Eddy just spins it like a typical person and Brett positively attacks the wheel 2. Brett playing Joy with depression/no defining emotion 3. Eddy’s black suit just disappearing into the background 4. Freezing hands. I can’t relate, it’s summer all year round where I live, but cold hands do not seem like much fun especially if you do indeed need to play violin 5. Eddy’s Surprise expressions were so funny and Hilary’s laughing just made me crack up as well 6. “I thought I knew, but now I don’t know anymore.” -Eddy 2022

I will not ever tire of saying this: Brett playing any excerpt of the Tchaikovsky violin concerto will never fail to make my day. The fact that "Love" was the emotion he got with it is just the cherry on top. And he played it so gorgeously! I wish he didn't have to stop playing.

This is great! I give my piano students a pack of emoji cards. They pick one and play an exercise, scale, or section of a piece with that feeling. This really helps them to develop playing with heartfelt expression. There is nothing worse than mechanical, robotic, soulless music. It also helps them discover the technique that is connected to the sound.
@wakingtheworld
@wakingtheworld Жыл бұрын
Have you heard of Lionel Yu? He did a vid doing this using the tune 'Mary Had a Little Lamb'. Wot fun that was. (I also recently watched him play at The Barbican Centre in London). Yep, nothing worse than robotic, soulless music. The odd mistake can be forgiven for expression and musicality. [I'm learning violin btw]

It's very interesting for the video, but it would be a disaster of an interpretation with an orchestra haha, you can't do that on Brahms entrance. It's meant to be dramatic and fierce during this moment, there's a lot of room left for interpretation but in a certain predefined perimeter.

This is kinda difficult because I think the emotion is written into the piece itself and if trying to convey a different one, they have to use facial expression or body language if they don't change up tempo or some other aspect of the playing. Or if they're deadpan (which they should be!) they'd have to have a wide repertoire and choose some part of a piece that already conveys the given emotion for it to be obvious.

Some people may say they're cheating with their facial expressions (a surprising lack in these comments though), but, in this case in particular, I think it just goes to show that playing music isn't just about the instrument; facial expression and body movement can add volumes to it. Even if certain people using violin for charades push that expression a bit for the sake of illegal clarity.

Brett has resting Shostakovich face. Also, he smiled more during sadness than during joy.

i feel playing pieces that makes tou feel an emotion would be a better idea than playing a piece with own emotion like Beethoven + anger = rage over lost penny

Yeah that's what I assumed it would be when I got the phone notification. I think your version of the game would be really cool, if I ever play this with my friends I'd do it that way

I these guys and their guest, especially Hilary, Ray, and Chloe. They should win an award for making classical music so accessible and insanely fun to watch and listen to. Fun fact, I have watched them so much that I can now make out the wrong notes. 😁
