My six favourite things from this video 1. Hilary spins the wheel slowly and elegantly, Eddy just spins it like a typical person and Brett positively attacks the wheel 2. Brett playing Joy with depression/no defining emotion 3. Eddy’s black suit just disappearing into the background 4. Freezing hands. I can’t relate, it’s summer all year round where I live, but cold hands do not seem like much fun especially if you do indeed need to play violin 5. Eddy’s Surprise expressions were so funny and Hilary’s laughing just made me crack up as well 6. “I thought I knew, but now I don’t know anymore.” -Eddy 2022

This is great! I give my piano students a pack of emoji cards. They pick one and play an exercise, scale, or section of a piece with that feeling. This is kinda difficult because I think the emotion is written into the piece itself and if trying to convey a different one, they have to use facial expression or body language if they don't change up tempo or some other aspect of the playing. Or if they're deadpan (which they should be!) they'd have to have a wide repertoire and choose some part of a piece that already conveys the given emotion for it to be obvious.

Some people may say they're cheating with their facial expressions (a surprising lack in these comments though), but, in this case in particular, I think it just goes to show that playing music isn't just about the instrument; facial expression and body movement can add volumes to it. Even if certain people using violin for charades push that expression a bit for the sake of illegal clarity.

The “Bach/Fear” would be amazing to make into a full creative rendition from you guys! While the guesses were incorrect, I loved the phrasing and feeling you gave to it, truly a new, original and wonderful idea. Obviously I have to comment on the great Ms. Hahn’s playing: every note she played reverberated with such a full sound whether it was soft or loud, and it was just gorgeous. Every note was just so in tune even in that upper register and if anything wasn’t perfectly in tune it was clearly because of the cold bending the pitch sharp. Complete perfection in expression as well as in her being fun and playful despite being the goddess of violin that she is. Just wow.
