Usually I just route other midi-capable instruments through my synth, with identical midi going to both devices simultaneously. This makes the synth's filters and effects trigger in sync with the notes from the other instrument. Optionally also run a sequence on the synth to do more interesting effects, but still synced up with whatever input is feeding into it.

An excellent analog synth for external instruments is the MS-20/mini with its External Signal Processor. It does track pitch..to the best of its abilities and has a bandpass filter, frequency to voltage converter, enveloper follower & Trigger Out which can be used to control the synth in various ways. Alison Goldfrapp used her voice to trigger the MS20 on 'Lovely Head' for a great effect. Another trick is to plug the MS20 into itself via the E.S.P. for screamy distortion.

Great post, cool sounds! But what does "Dry and processed" mean? I've got a Minibrute 2S, it's only got a 3.5 mm input jack. Will just any old 1/4 to 3.5 mm adapter work? Or do I have to be concerned about possibly damaging my synth with the wrong power amount going in? I'm a total newbie. Thanks!
@sweetwater4 жыл бұрын
Hi ThinkerThunker. By dry and processed, I meant that you're either running the external instrument directly into the Aux In jack, or are first going into a preamp and/or effects. A 1/4" to 3.5mm adapter or cable will work just fine. Aux Inputs are typically expecting a high input level, so you're far more likely to underdrive the input than overdrive it (and musicians have be overloading synths' Aux Inputs since the Minimoog back in the 1970s). Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_

Question.....when you plugged the guitar into the sub 37 and kicked in distortion and delay, the guitar sounded very low compared to level of the synth. Is there anyway to raise volume of the guitar in the mix?

Hi Bob. The Audio In jack, on synths that have them, are usually expecting a line-level signal or even a Eurorack audio signal (which is very hot). So it helps to have a mixer or a powerful Boost pedal to get your external audio source up to those levels. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_

We are trying to run our electric guitar through our KORG Monologue, but having a really hard time getting sound from the guitar to come through. We are only able to get a faint sound from the guitar when we press & hold a key on the KORG keyboard, but it looks like we should be able to process/hear sound from the guitar straight through...? We have the guitar plugged into the Line IN on the KORG and an output cable going from Line OUT to an amp (we also tried going through a small mixing board but had the same issue) We messed with all of the dials, knobs and levers on the KORG (Filter/VCO/Gain/Resonance/mixer, etc), while strumming the guitar with really no improvement to hearing the guitar through the KORG. ANY advice or suggestion? THANKS!

@MadelnMachines6 жыл бұрын
I'm curious how you could recreate something like the prophet X routing something like Kontakt orchestra samples out of your audio interface and into a synth. Could you get a gate signal from kontakt to somehow trigger the synths envelopes as you play so it would sound natural like the samples were part of the synth?
@sweetwater6 жыл бұрын
Hi MiM. Triggering the synth is the easy part. The easiest way would be via MIDI, but a Gate would work as well if your controller keyboard sent a Gate. The much bigger issue would be polyphony. It would be incredibly difficult to somehow get each note from Kontakt into a separate synthesizer, such that each note had its own Filter (with its own Filter Envelope) and Amp (with its own Amp Envelope). If you don't do that, you'll basically have a polyphonic synth (Kontakt in this case) with all of its simultaneous notes going to the same Filter (with a single Filter Envelope) then all going on to the same Amp (with its single Amp Envelope). It would then be much more like a Paraphonic synth than a Polyphonic synth.
@MadelnMachines6 жыл бұрын
@@sweetwater Yes that's true. I'm kind of a bit uncertain of how paraphonic works differently. Not in theory, but in reality. I get that each voice doesn't have it's own filter or envelopes etc but since all the filters and envelopes are just copies of each other in a polyphonic synth what practical difference does it make? If you press a chord with all the notes at the same time would it make a difference? If you staggered the notes then would the new note fail to retrigger the envelope resulting in the latter notes having a shorter sound or be filtered in a different way (if there's an envelope modulated filter)? Thanks
@sweetwater6 жыл бұрын
Hi again MIM, It's that, every time you hit a new note, all other notes that were currently sounding would get the same Filter and Amp effects triggered again.
@matiasss5505 жыл бұрын
can you press any key just to play the entire song from the mp3 player thought the minilogue (without keeping a key pressed) and use the filter?
@sweetwater5 жыл бұрын
Hi tasss550. The reason you need to press a key is because the mp3 is going into the Mixer, then Filter, and finally the Amp. The Amp is, by design, set to be silent unless the Amp EG (Envelope Generator) is pushing it above silence. (If it didn't do this you'd never be able to make a note stop.) So... the answer is: You always have to have the Amp EG up in order to hear any sound, whether it's the oscillators, noise, or an external mp3. Some synths have a Sustain Pedal jack that holds the Amp EG at the Sustain level, and some synths have a "Drone" switch that keeps the Amp EG locked on. The Minilogue has neither so you'll have to keep a key held if you want to hear the mp3 sound. Hope that helps. -_Daniel_

Hi Alexandre, Ideally, you'd run the guitar through a good overdrive, distortion, or boost pedal to get the signal strong enough to run into the AUDIO IN jack. Then you can either send a MIDI Note On or send a +5v trigger to the GATE IN jack. (It "might" work by just plugging a cable into the GATE In with the other end going to nothing.) Hi Shaigh Josephson. This video is about processing external audio using a synth's Mixer, Filter, and Amp, along with using LFOs and Envelopes to modulate the external sounds via those three modules. If a MIDI-equipped guitar is used to play the synth, it will simply sound like someone played keys on the synth; nothing from the external audio will be heard through the synth. I'll put a request on our wish list to do a video specifically about using external alternative MIDI controllers to drive a synth. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_

I connected a Roland jdxi (audio out) into a MicroKorgS (audio in), with speaker connected to the Korg. When I hit the keys on the Roland, the signal just goes thru the Korg and out the speaker. I didn't have to kit any key on the Korg. I assume this is because the Korg has a "global" INPUT option for "Audio In - Thru" set to ON. I didn't try it with Audio In Thru set to OFF. I'm a total newbie and didn't realize I had to press a key on the Korg, to hear the Roland. The Audio In Thru setting is nice. I can play the Roland thru the Korg and play the Korg simultaneously while not affecting the Roland sounds. Is this typically how this stuff works?
@supercommando4407 жыл бұрын
BTW, I've been trying to play the Roland thru my MatrixBrute the same way but the brute has NO "Audio In Thur = ON" setting. I was told by Arturia I have to "root the Audio In to one or the two filters". Not exactly sure what that means. And they also said I have to "open the VCA to let the sound pass through". For a beginner, I'm a bit lost on what exactly this means. I need BEGINNER instructions.
@supercommando4407 жыл бұрын
hmmm, at about :30 sec into your vid, you mention "it doesnt exactly work that way". Welll.... as I described above it actually DOES with the setup I described, with the only adjustment required after plugging in the audio out/in wire is setting the Korg Audio In Thru = ON. Simple as that. So the question for my setup; is this unique to the MicroKOrgs? It's a lot more simple on that synth, versus, say, my matrixBrute for which I haven't been able to get a peep from the audio input source. Here, I've learned I actually have to press a KEY on the matrixBrute and then make some other adjustments I still haven't wrapped my head around (see my previous comment).

@@sweetwater ah I see. I was hoping there was some trick I could do with midi. Maybe, using a midi pickup as the input?

How do you program the sub 37 so the ext in signal effects the filter?
@sweetwater6 жыл бұрын
Hi Cam. If you're wanting to have the amplitude of the external audio push the cutoff frequency of the filter, you'd need a device that has an Envelope Follower with a CV Out (such as a Moogerfooger MF-101 Lowpass Filter or Korg MS-20). The external audio would go to both the EXT Audio In *and* the Envelope Follower. The CV Out from the Envelope Follower would go to the FILTER CV In of the Sub 37

I tried this with my new Gibson but it didn’t work. I have the Sub 37, Eventide Space, Gibson Les Paul and a Spider 15W.. How to connect them properly?
@sweetwater6 жыл бұрын
Hello, Liselotte! Thanks for reaching out. Check out minute 2:32. You will not hear any sound until you trigger on your synth. It is going through all of the circuitry, but you will not hear anything until a key is triggered. Feel free to reach out to me directly if you want to discuss it a little more. Thanks for the interest! Alex Campos, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (260) 247-8024 (call or text)

I'm having a hard time getting this to work through my XW P1. How do I navigate through the menus to get this to work?
@sweetwater7 жыл бұрын
Hi RiffPower2112, I don't have access to an XW-P1 right now but, if memory serves, when you're in the Solo Synthesizer area that lets you choose the Solo Synthesizer Tone Configuration, choose the (5) External Input Sound Block. That Block uses Mic In and Inst In instead of oscillators. Hope that helps!

will this work on a Roland Gaia SH01 too?
@sweetwater7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tommy, the1/8" stereo EXTERNAL IN jack on the GAIA doesn't feed the synthesizer components. Instead it was designed to allow background audio to pass through to the OUTPUT jacks all the time. It does have a useful Center Cancel feature though, which helps to remove vocals from pre-recorded songs. Thanks for watching!

This video reminds me of that 1970/1983 documentary, Discovering Electronic Music, in particular the part where he talks about a synthesizer being used to change the sounds of other instruments: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5iZp3yIosuihKs

Hi Kaitlyn. A computer was used only to edit the video segments together and to upload the video to KZbin. (And, of course, the computer you used to watch this video;-) Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_

Why not just tape down the key?

Hi Owen. There's a company out there that sells metal weights (in various colors) that are designed to hold down one key. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_

"Director of Product Optimization" That's a very nice way of saying "making gear sound good." Don't get me wrong, I love Daniel's synth demos, he's one of the better demonstrators and does a good job of making stuff sound good. I just have to laugh a little at that title though, because it sounds like PR speak.
