So useful!! I have been playing Thad Jones' Groove Merchant in a big band and didn't know what to do with all the chords. So this is perfect. Thank you.

This is really great Jeremy - no one ever really talks about this skill! Great to have it articulated so clearly 👍🏻

Aside from playing in my town's big band, I also got the chair for this semester in our uni's big band, so this was a good reminder and recap for me, of what to actually pay attention to in such a setting. :)

Loved that very helpful! Would love to hear more about how to interpret big band charts as a pianist and what to look out for! Thanks a lot!

Your “competitor” Tony Winston brought me to your channel. Very nice video to come across. Cheers, Daniel 🤙🏻 (favorite school supply? lol trapper keeper and hp rpn calculator perhaps?)

I remember in college going to jazz festivals with our big band and getting high marks for my piano playing-even during sight reading. I attribute this to a few things: I was actually guitar player (long story), I couldn’t possibly read the charts that fast, and I rarely soloed. Add in a Count Basie ending and I was good to go. Such a great opportunity.

People talk about how Miles Davis played the rests - Here we are literally playing in the rests. Great video - thanks!; you should do more on big band piano playing - very little quality online content regarding these topics cyrrently avaliable. You could even do the differences between Bassie and Ellington big band piano styles, or best big band piano voicings...

Favorite back to school supply is red pens. I didn’t use them in school but I do for my job and this is the only time I can find them.

I played this version of All Of Me with our college big band last year, I really could've used this ahahah, this arrangement has so many chords that feel pretty unnatural rythmically and and harmonically
