The melody is simple and repeated in each stanza so easy to learn. But the words! They are another matter. Ran Danker sings beautifully. A lovely performance with the Israel Philharmonic.

After seven months of study, I plan to perform this piece in a duet with Ron Danker and the IPO - they on the computer, I before an audience. When I look at the English, immediately I'm reminded of the Ivrit meaning and have no trouble summoning up the words. It is so natural in both poetry and music. I love this piece and I hope my listeners do, too.

This is such a beautiful performance, both by Ron Danker and by the Philharmonic. He is so full of feeling, underplayed. His motions economical, full of sincerity. I have always been following the text when I studied this piece - and for the first time I watched the singer. Kol HaKovod.

Progress Report: Haven't looked at this song for three weeks. A run through has all the Ivrit totally on track and fluent for me. It is definitely a song for a man, proof is the address to the woman is in n'keyvah, in the female form. (Hebrew has masculine and feminine verbs and nouns.) He addresses her in n'keyvah - "ki sa'art elai" for example. But Chava Alberstein sings it beautifully. Then, she sings everything beautifully!

Since you stormed upon me, I will play you forever. In vain, I am trying to put a wall between us. In vain, I am trying to close doors. My desire is for you and your garden is mine. My body is dizzy, my hands limp. Let is be known for the record, that you are both the sin and the judge. You are sudden forever and my eyes are dazed by you. While struggling in the streets, bleeding raspberry sunsets, you are binding me in sheafs. Do not entreat the retreaters to approach. I am a lone nomad in your lands. My prayer is asking for nothing. My prayer is one and it says: here's to you! To the end of sadness, to the depths of the night, in long and empty iron streets, God has commanded me to endure your torture and to produce almonds and raisins, out of my misery. It is good that your hand is gripping my heart. Do not take pity on it, when it tires of beating. Have no mercy when it darkens like a room, with the stars left outside. There, the moon is sizzling like a kiss of a cook. There, a moist sky is thundering a cough. There, a Sycamore tree is dropping a branch like a kerchief and I bow and pick it up. I know that one day, to the beat of drums, in a bustling and aching trade city, I will fall, head-stricken, to pick up your smile from under a chariots.

There is a great deal of worthwhile music that I am not exposed to. Thanks to the Israel Philharmonic for programming this unusual poetry and music by two giants of Israel artistry. His diction is impeccable, the Ivrit totally clear. The translation helpful. And keep in mind - in Hebrew, poetry and music have only one word: shir (sheer)! As if they are inseparable.
