Me who constantly seems like Sonic CD is running away from me whenever I try to play it:
@Mitsuraga9 ай бұрын
What's funny is that, as a SEGA fanboy raised in a Nintendo family, the PC port of CD was the only Sonic game I would ever own until 2000-ish when we got the Dreamcast. It was my window into what I was missing as I yearned for a Saturn, and I loved it at the time, almost entirely due to the intro and ending cutscenes.

Oof that pound cable blew out some of those Genesis colors 😬 I get not everyone wants to spend out the nose on a RetroTink and RGB tho. Another cool thing about the Classic 2 mini console version is that it fixes the slowdown.
@NNCReviews9 ай бұрын
I agree. I actually went out of the way to get better cables for the Genesis/CD, the contrast was a bit high for my liking, as you said. The sonic 3 video will have it, and the footage and video always looks INFINITELY better. I actually don’t like the pound cable at all anymore. It was just good to introduce it as a good consumer grade level setup. IMO anything is better than composite

Honestly, I've gone out of my way to play CD in every way possible, including buying both a Mega CD, and a Japanese copy of Gems on the PS2 (since it has more games), and again, a Japanese PC copy... though that was more for dumping and preservation. But I'll totally agree, this is a total nightmare if you want to save money. Personally, I just really enjoy the original base Mega CD version the most... though I do believe SCD++ makes it better with the better spin dash and homing attack. Anything is better than the 1996 PC version that got ported for Gems, though. I've never had a more frustrating experience, especially with the Metal Sonic race. It's a challenge on every other version (except for SCD++ with the air dash making it trivial), but in the 1996 PC/Gems version it's near impossible.
@NNCReviews9 ай бұрын
I think the worst crime of the gems port is that was the way most people played CD before 2011, it made SO many people think it was bad, it was annoying and I wanted to change that view on it honestly, the MEGA CD version is good! also funny you mention CD++ because in the full video, NNC Reviews: Sonic CD, i actually cover that port, check it out if you want!

Things like the cost of Sonic CD and the Sega CD are what justify flash carts for me lol. I'd love one, but when the flash cart that plays all Sega CD games for over $100 less than the price of the console without even considering the price of the games its just the way I'll play it. Thank god flash carts are still original hardware, with FPGA for Sega CD compatibility.
@NNCReviews9 ай бұрын
Oh ABSOLUTELY! And thankfully SEGA CD games don’t have copy protection so you can burn most games to disc and it’ll work fine, and won’t damage the system unlike with the Dreamcast

So little bit of history for you is that sonic gems collection was originally going to have knuckles chaotix and segasonic the hedgehog the 1993 arcade game played with a track ball but that was cut due to issues with the controls and we don't know why they cut knuckles chaotix we can only speculate why and it was or why it's art was left in the gallery.

False. Sonic CD was written to take place before the events of Sonic 2. The character designer for tails said this on multiple occasions in 1993. Watch the entire CD review. CD couldn’t be on jam because of disc limitations

I go over my thoughts in the full video, but I actually feel slightly differently now. The tracks I love (to get it out of the way) are tidal tempest and wacky workbench While I still think the US tracks don’t fit the themes of the levels and often sound out of place, I’ve come around to stardust speedway. It sounds really nice. I just think the JP fits it more! Also I love sonic warrior! I would recommend you watch the entire NNC Reviews: Sonic CD, it’s a fun journey

I may be misremembering, but didn’t Sonic CD get a PC port back in the day? Not the Whitehead remake port, but rather a straight up port from the Sega CD, back in the 90s. Never mind, you seem to already know about the PC port.

Well you can buy a 2018 AT Games Sega Genesis Falshback do the mod and have the entire Genesis, Master System, Game Gear, 32X and some Sega CD too on an SD card which will play on that unit once modded. Or a Legends Flashback which is a poor mans Raspberry Pie which can have through an SD card and Mods all vintage consoles libraries to play at your disposal. Or finally get the Sonic Origins for Nintendo Switch. I have all these options and Sonic CD plays like it would originally and its in HD.

4:00 It seems to me that you didn't understand the answer. It was a corporate response, so as not to have to say "people, in order not to create a third world war before launching the game for a Sega CD exclusive we didn't put it in the elevator", Nothing to do with nostalgia (CD is one of my favourites). To be honest, I much more like the idea that CD is a separate story, like story books. The game is designed so that when you get the bad ending, thanks to time travel, it feels coherent with the beginning cinematic, it can be an endless loop until you get the good ending.
@NNCReviews9 ай бұрын
That’s fair. It’s still odd to me considering corporate answer or not, this information was confirmed to be true back in 1993, as I said I have nothing but respect for Tyson and Aaron. It’s clear they came up with it on the spot and I did go a little overboard, but still, the answer was RIGHT THERE, and mania literally has CD levels in it so it was just really confusing but I can understand their perspective Also that’s a cool theory but you could say the same about every classic game, it looks until you get the good ending
@GoldenGrenadier9 ай бұрын
Thought this was going to be about how bad the level design is. Didn't know the PC port had collision issues. The original Sega CD version isn't all that great. Sometimes the music lags behind it's trigger like when you spin the end goal sign and it can't play the whole jingle because it's 3 seconds behind.
@NNCReviews9 ай бұрын
That’s true but that’s because the SEGA CD loads the music different from the game, Watch the full review I actually disagree I love CDs level design for what it wanted to do from a creative standpoint

@NNCReviews9 ай бұрын
the funny thing about that is, I literally say ALL the time that I don't mind emulation, in fact I endorse it completely, emulation is a great thing, if you watch the video you would know the only reason I'm doing this is because i want to see how the games progress, and for ME, playing it on original hardware is the best way to do so. Also this is documentary about the official way to play Sonic CD, actually pay attention to the video next time lol also CD based consoles are likely to not last forever yes, but I and many others back up our games for the sake of always having them, if you are a collector and don't back them up the there's a problem
