Playing Tall in EU4 is a well known strategy. Historically, I've been against EU4 playing tall nations, but something has made me change my mind. Definitely not April Fools, nope. Some say that EU4 1.33 changed the playinbg tall meta, but the concept is the same. Get high income. Play as the Dutch / EU4 Netherlands. Don't declare wars. Let me know your thoughts on this EU4 tall game!

Playing tall means you ‘show of strength’ or humiliate in every war, vassalise other nations, and just get involved and fight every proxy war you can ‘“just because” with tons of mercs because you have stacks and stacks of cash, as well as going colonial usually. So when you’re not intentionally trying to be a masochist for April Fool’s, it can be a pretty fun experience.

@@goksir5845 It’s basically how you play the Austria mission tree. That one starts tall then ends wide. Usually people start wide then go tall, but I think the Austrian way is better. Plus, I personally love proxy wars (so does the United States 🇺🇸 if you know what I mean) it’s like Hoi4 Spain or China which I also love because if you lose, oh well, not your problem.

Your size doesn't matter when playing tall. What matters is that you get the most out of the provinces you have. For example, If you are playing as the Duch you conquer the trade center in the English Chanel colonize expanded whatever but unlike in a normal game you prioritize improving your land over taking other's but you still Expand

I have done a Netherlands game where I do not expand outside of its largest historical European borders, and it was somehow the most war-mongery game I've ever had. Hired out a LOT of Condottieri when it was strategically worth it. I'd usually try to squeeze SOME money out of them, but I was more interested in preventing my rivals from gaining too much strength.

Tbh for me playing tall is more of an opportunity to play wide lol. Like when I played as Holland to Netherlands I got so incredibly rich that I started WWI in 1650 or something like that. It was me, the French (which do nothing when you ally them, honestly it would have been better to turn on them), and the Spaniards against quite literally the entirety of Europe, I don't think there was one country in Europe, outside of my allies that didn't join these wars against me (oh yeah, there was more than one) but it's not that difficult when you earn like 500 a month, you go grossly over force limit with the army, you then get the mercenaries, build forts everywhere because why not, and now you are untouchable. Worst case scenario you white peace, best case scenario you win and get everything 50% off because it's a defensive war. I enjoy these HRE starts where you need to play tall to matter at all, but baby, it's all about getting into that place when you can raise hell.

my absolute best and most intensive playthrough was playing as Candar (one of the ottoman beyliks, pronounced Jandar, located on the coast of the Black Sea, they've got some really good ideas for playing tall). first I had to crush the ottomans as a 2-(or3)province state - i think it took me like an entire day to play just these 10-15 years of war with the Ottomans; then i turned into a merchant republic, had to fight for key provinces in the black sea and the mediterranean, which i would then protect with the land of my vassals. then i would fight to create trade cities in the mediterranean trade nodes and make them join my trade league. once i managed to rip and tear my way to the gibraltar i took i think expansion (or exploration, don't remember) and set off to colonize africa; and since the spanish and portuguese had a head start there i had to duke it out with them all the time another really cool scenario for tall is Mogadishu. same deal - go merchant republic, take key provinces, create trade cities, colonize east. insane start, boatloads of fun. tldr - if you do it right, playing tall is at least as intensive as playing wide

@@kalterverwalter4516 Conquering territory wouldn't be in my definition of playing tall. But sure, if you set a certain small limit and go from there I guess. But conquering is not part of the playing tall style is what I'm trying to say. Personally I like playing as a free city in the HRE when I play tall. Though you quickly get to the point where it's just always 999 points if you want to develop. A colonist works. Pillaging is nice. I tend to have vassals doing my dirty work. Eventually (when being a free city is not worth the buffs..so when you still need 999 to develop) I change into an OPM and become the emperor instead. That's pretty fun.

@@AdamPersson See in there I would disagree. To Play Tall you need Provinces. To Play Tall effectivly you should at least have around 200 Provinces. If I Play Tall I try to emulate MP Style. Conquer a bunch of stuff and Dev it. I mean there are lvls to IT. You could Play a Tall Netherlands a Tall Germany or even a Tall Roman Empire.

Yes. Play Hesse try to Form Westphalia Prussia and Germany Abuse (and I mean Abuse Show Strength CB) If you manage to Show strength 15-20 Times in the First 50 years That would be Perfect. Dont Conquer to much to fast or else your Rivals become to strong. And Go Innovative First. Why Inno First? Adviser cost also Ino gain is Not That Bad tbh. However this way you will Always have enough MP to Dev verry Early.
