I purchased this game after hearing all the negative reviews about it. I've heard so many people call this the worst Neptunia game ever, but I don't think it's possible to get worse than Hyperdevotion in my opinion. While I will agree the original Neptunia is weird compared to the more modern releases, especially if you go to it after playing every Re;Birth game back-to-back, the original 2010 release is actually among my favorite games in the series. Few reasons being is that the gameplay is different enough from the rest of the series to give it a fresh spin on the RPG formula. While many people aren't a fan of this game's combat system, I find it a refreshing change of pace. The story is another aspect that I think really carries this game, as it's in a far more darker & more serious tone than any other game. Stakes are high, you can feel legitimate tension and drama between the characters. It's not so "happy-go-lucky" as it was in Re;Birth1 for example. I definitely appreciate the darker tone & it's something I wish the Neptunia series focused more on, instead of putting puffy, "haha look im so RANDUM XDDDXD" characters in serious settings and have them completely destroy the tone sometimes. I went into this game with an open mind and ended up having a good time.

I dont thing devotion was THAT bad, I think it's hate more so comes out of the fact it is a noire dating sim, and none of the other girls got it.....now if they had just made a bunch of the devotion games for each of the main characters I think the hate would be negated to almost none
@greggasm6 жыл бұрын
I honestly liked Hyperdevotion, although I know the position of that game is highly contested to say the least. The strategic aspect was a nice change of pace and the dating sim part was cute, but I do think much of the hate was relegated to the fact that it was solely about Noire just because she won a popularity poll while the other three basically got stiffed.
@skyknight04086 жыл бұрын
How the hell did Noire of all people win a popularity contest? Did everyone ironically vote for her, because they thought it would be funny if the one without friends wins?

To be honest, I'm not even joking when I say I could make an entire video explaining why I dislike Hyperdevotion, but my three main issues with it stem from the writing, the gameplay and (nitpicky) the PC port and how poorly it's optimized.

I hate conquest ending so damn much. It was just so random and went from buddy buddy to brb killing you all for plot. I played this game when it was a month old, seeing a friend play the mess of the game on stream and finding it highly enjoyable personally. It was clunky, got repetitive in dungeons quick, and all those Shares and replaying the whole game because I missed a monster for my encyclopedia from a story dungeon, but I loved it. The story, the characters, the "Tangerines kick ass." From Blanc...I can't hate it, it holds a lot of good memories. Only ever tried mk2 after that and it felt better gameplay wise, but story did take a hit. I do wanna play the others at some point, and maybe get back to this loving series.

I like both rb1 and og1. The rb1 could be faster paced at times and it can be portable. But og1 has better music in my opinion, better writing, and a better UI. "Flat textures". Like rb1 has ones that are more detailed. Most of the time, og1 looks better than rb1 for me. Higher res shading, more bloom effect, etc. For fps issues, set the PS3's resolution to 720p in XMB. Install to HDD if load times bother you.

I started with the HDN series this year with the HDN colleciton for Ps3, and of course I started with HDN 1, and I absolutly love it, the story was amazing because it was the perfect balance between serious and jokes, I loved the gameplay, and Neptune was easily my favorite character in that game followed by Noire and 5pb. Then I started mk2, Nepgear is BEST HDN character of all time (I don't get why so many people found her bland with no character at all..) I loved the gameplay even more. Then I played Victory and let's just say.. yeah.. from the original trilogy it's my least favorite game because the story never takes itself serious, and when it does (for example the scene where Blanc had an emotional breakdown where Plutia/Iris Heart tries to cheer her up) Neptune just ruins it with "WHO CARES I'M THE MAIN CHARACTER" lines and it got to the point where I really dislike her now and the gameplay got so dumbed down.. it's literally just spam your square attack for most damage and guard points damage, if you know that a boss fight is comming up just fill up your EX Drive in random battles and spam EX moves on the boss so you can win in under 2 minutes. So we did go from a good dungeon crawler with a rather good spin on the turn based combat (sadly you can change your command's and item skills mid battle which took away some challenge), to an awesome sequel with awesome characters and good combat system that took elements from the first game but put it's own spin on it, to a third game where Neptune is the most annoying character outside of her HDD form , and (at least for they story) a brainless combat system.

The first Neptunia game generated a fanbase in Japan, but reviews in North America and Europe scored the game low due to sexism, oversexualization and at times, even feminism. The most aspect that people quoted was that a girl could be put into a story who has amnesia and has no power and just in being herself can destroy enemies who are aware of themselves and their full power. That as the CPUs got closer to each other, it gave the vibe of "If girls ruled the world, there would be peace and harmony forever" attitude. The writing was more serious and felt more intended for teenagers and adults. We saw the world through the eyes of Neptune trying to discover herself and her existence. I liked the personality behind the characters and had fun playing the first game, In order to tone down the series they went from focusing on the world itself to focusing on the relationship between the CPUs and then the series evolved into sets of CPUs or CPU candidates central to the story. They tuned down the language and focused on advertising the game to children and teenagers. The second game introduced the CPU sisters and retconned the first game. Though I liked the third game and its characters, I kept on wishing to explore more of the Hyperdimension instead of the Ultra Dimension or in later games, the Heart Dimension/Zero Dimension. Then Four Goddess Online was garbage in its writing and if I wanted to make fun of MMORPGs, the one anime that is closest to MMORPG tropes (in terms of what goes on in-game) was in Recovery of an MMO Junkie. Anime brought back some of the Sexualized stuff. Can't tell me that Black Dress purple heart was wearing in the anime wasn't intended to be sexual. I don't really mind..... but trash or not The first game had good writing and at least a stable plot. Though the gameplay left much to be desired. Worse games were the Action-Oriented Games that had no real story, little gameplay and it was easy to get bored. However, it made sales due to taking a hit and having your clothes stripped off... I am sure that made the boys very happy....

This is my first time seeing the very first Neptunia game. All this time, I thought it looked and played like Re;Birth 1 and the only thing changed between the original and remake was the plot and character interactions/personalities. This was my very first Neptunia game I played a decade ago when it released. Remember seeing it advertised in Shonen Jump magazine here in America and I bought it based on it being turn-based, the character designs were good, and the premise was interesting. I've honestly fell out of touch with the Neptunia series after Neptunia 3 (known as "Neptunia Victory") because I just didn't find much enjoyment in it like I did the first game and MK2, and even Re;Birth 1 did nothing for me. But looking back at the series now after so long and found this video (and your channel) kinda made me a bit interested in the series again. I can agree that the gameplay in Nep 1 is the worst and the series definitely improved, but I still find some charm in it despite it being rough. It's good to see a lot of other current Neptunia fans feel Neptunia 1 writing is still the best/gold standard for the series because I honestly felt like playing MK2 and then Victory, the writing wasn't entirely to the same level as the original. Maybe I'll pick up Neptunia 4/Victory II and give that a shot. Just nice watching this video and getting nostalgic.

I agree that the first game here has the best story and writing out of all of them. Another thing to mention is the amount of english dubbing it had. They dubbed nearly every scene, and even adjusted the mouth animation to match the dub if you had it set to english. I stopped using the english dub after V because it just pissed me off by how much of it was unvoiced and I never went back to the english dub after that, but I did check things from time to time, and the later games still use the Japanese mouth movements on the scenes, even with english set... that is, if their mouths move at all as later games only dub like 20% at best now.... I think the only thing they didn't dub in english on the first game was 5pb.'s radio broadcasts, which I never even knew were voiced in Japanese at the time, as I didn't check. And lastly, never forget; "Tangerines kick ass"

6:12 The conquest ending was made so that haters of the first game would shut the fuck up, they always complained about how bad the writing was in the first game so they responded by making the Conquest Ending as a way to tell the hater that they are capable of making a serious story, they just choose to go for a goofy approach

I also liked the characterization more in the first game. Specifically Blanc as she was much more quite, dry and frank in her words in the original until she went White Heart and broke out the vulgarity. The contrast was more funny and impactful (my favorite example being “Tangerines kick ass.” in that soft, matter a fact voice) compared to now where their is less of a difference between Blanc and White Hearts personality.

Now I see it as a staple meme for the series, every game needs it ported and unchanged for at least one mission and called out by Neptune for being over used, except for 1 game where Neptune mentions it not being used. Also they should have a cheap spin off game entirely of Virtua Forest, like maybe a deer hunting arcade shooter type thing.

well the item skill system was kinda nice since it makes players predict the damage and change the stats of the item skill with each turn to counter the situation(also you didn't mention how players can change the item skill during a fight.) like setting the antidote skill to 100% to counter enemies that causes poison or if you feel the enemies next attack will lower your health below 30% then setting "Nep Bull C II" to 100% before ending your turn since the requirement was "hp below 30% upon damage" to restore 60% hp and how the game kept prioritizing recovery items with lower recovery percentage during my play neptune kept using 30% recov potion rather than the 60% when both skill had a 100% activation rate

I got this game with the other two original games in the "Hypercollection". Only bought it because I wanted to have at least something as a hard copy(hopefully someday we may get physical releases on PC). I tried to play it, but....! The combat felt so boring and it was loading almost 30 seconds every time I tried to open the menu. The menu itself was laggy. I pushed a button and 5 seconds later the cursor moved...if I was lucky. Sometimes it took even longer! And the item system was so random. To me the game in this state feels pretty much unplayable and it is a miracle to me how they could sell enough copies to justify the production of a second and third game. I think it was the right move to remake the story into RB1.

SpriteStar But how could anyone play it long enough to experience the great story, when it was mechanically an unplayable mess? If I had started the series with this game I would've returned it on the same day and never ever touched anything out of this franchise again. From a technical pov this game is completely broken and I would not have played it long enough to start to love its story and characters. So I'm really glad I started into the series with Re;Birth 1!
@OneManCast6 жыл бұрын
+skyknight0408 Simple. Not everyone agrees with you. For example, myself. I actually enjoyed the gameplay for what it was (clunky gameplay is pretty normal for PS3 era games) loved the actual CHALLENGE behind the mechanics, whereas now there's zero difficulty, and the story was the best part that Re;Birth 1 RUINED. It literally cut out several character developments that made the OG Neptunia so endearing. I started with Re;Birth 1, and when I look back from platinuming the entire franchise, I realize how hollow Re;Birth 1 is. Not to mention they didn't reboot the game out of fan backlash. They rebooted the game because they had a falling out with NISA and Gust. This is only further corroborated by the lack of NISA and Gust from Victory onwards. It wasn't because the original three were bad, it was literally a spiteful move to a third party developer, and they moved along to Felistella. Re;Birth as a whole was complete and utter trash with zero difficulty, low class and low brow humor writing, cutting out major characterizations. I often wonder why people think Re;Birth 1 has better mechanics, when in actuality, Re;Birth's system is more of a transition than a gameplay element. How can you say that a set of mechanics that strip away difficulty is better than a game that encourages you to master the mechanics out of sheer necessity? To me, putting it like that makes me think the OG is better.
@skyknight04086 жыл бұрын
+OneManCast "Clunky gameplay is pretty normal for PS3 era games" Excuse me?! Even the clunkiest games from PS1 and PS2 era that I've played were less clunky than this. Why would it be okay on a newer console to have a game with mechanics that are more broken than the games on older console generations? Pushing the button to open the menu should not make the game freeze for 30 seconds before it finally opens! And scrolling through the menu should not give 5sec lags. And closing the menu should not freeze the game again for god knows how long before the character can move again! This game came out in 2011(in the west)! I've seen games from the early 90's that run better. And I've also seen games from that era that had a more innovative(and less boring) combat system. As much as I love the series and the characters, pre-reboot Neptunia 1 is an unplayable mess that's inexcusable for the time it came out(I have a feeling that only the characters and story saved it)! If that was the work of NISA and Gust, I'd say they did the right thing in parting from them! The Re;Birth games are NOT perfect by any means(I can't see the same 5 dungeons over and over anymore) but at least they are playable!
@OneManCast6 жыл бұрын
+skyknight0408 First and foremost, cite some examples. Also, I didn't have those problems with the OG Neptunia game. So I really have zero understanding as to why you say these things to me. I didn't have any problems with the game in that regard. I guess the Hypercollection is superior to the North American version, I dunno. Honestly, NISA and Gust have put out the better product here. Also, playability is entirely subjective, since I found the original playable. So I suggest you slow your roll with your superiority complex in regards to your subjectivity. You want to talk about unplayable? Try playing Megatagmension and see how much of your patience and sanity remains then! Even more annoying is that you say the OG is unplayable, but then completely and utterly disregarding how much the Re;Birth series gentrifies the story of the Original 3, sans Victory, where they're practically the same game. I both loathe and love these Neptunia Elitists who think the game is unplayable because they have so little of an attention span. Yet tell me. If the game is so unplayable, why was I able to play the game to platinum?
@Taiknight996 жыл бұрын
I remember how game breaking the combo is and I kind of miss everyone having a gun. As bad as the game play is, the main saving grace for me is the story and the imense amount of references. Though Nep is MC, IF had A LOT of development and focus (with most of the side/DLC characters) which I also really enjoyed. I was really sad when Red and NISA disappeared in later games due to licencing. And though Nep and IF. Are probably my favorite characters in this game, Gust and Compa's grandpa are also really fun characters.

I personally loved the 1st game, I can understand most of the gripes but they are things I'm not really bothered about. my main i9ssue with the game is the bar indicating how many shares a nation has, is it 60% or 61%, can't tell. if there is a number indicator for it I can't find it, but yeah apart from that I love the game

I remember clocking in 12 hours a day in this game, then replaying it three times because I kept missing the missable enemies in the level where Arfoire traps you in the disc. That wasn't fun. But yeah, OG times! Woo!

Well, I'm on PC so I don't know the original trilogy at all. However, while I've heard about things like the item mechanics and some other stuff that made the game bad, it's nice to see a video that can actually find some good stuff about it -- and just from that, I can even see how the later games might have lost something.

It mystifies me that IF and Compa, in the Re;birth games, only ever get their basic outfits and always have completely empty outfit lists, whereas they clearly had alternate outfits available in the original PS3 game, as shown in this video with Iffy's swimsuit. Considering that they tend to recycle every asset they can, it makes no f'ing sense that they haven't ever brought those particular costumes back; having their outfit lists empty for the entire Re;birth trilogy just made them feel incomplete. (Likewise, with characters like RED and 5pb. not getting any changes of clothing.) God knows that the CPUs and candidates have more than enough outfit recolors. At least they added a couple extra options for those two in VII.

Can't believe I'm saying this about a character I dislike, but I agree with +Vert Green Heart as well as finding the OG to have one of the best stories PERIOD.
@huuishuu6 жыл бұрын
Personally I disagree with this. While definitely flawed, as I agree it drags on way longer than it needed to or even deserved to, I feel as though it did a good job of portraying genuine character development of the Ultradimension CPUs from how they started out to how they ended up in the end. Hell, I'd go as far to say the UD CPUs are better than the HD CPUs since they've had an entire game dedicated to them and you get to know more about them on a deeper level compared to the originals. If the original 2010 game was canon I'd be telling a different story, but it's not. mk2 did a shit job at developing the main CPUs, because it focused on developing the candidates, making the originals feel like a last-minute addition almost. Sure, VII attempted to rectify this problem with its Hyper Dimension arc, but it didn't do enough in my opinion, it largely suffers from the same underdeveloped or non-sensical writing of the previous games.
@OneManCast6 жыл бұрын
+huu Of course Mk2 didn't develop the CPUs. It wasn't their story. They were bit characters who needed no development. I'm sorry, but we're majorly going to have to agree to disagree there. The only UD CPUs I liked were Noire (because of personal bias for Noire) and VERT of all people. UD Blanc is a bit rude and crude and Neptune is just fucking OBNOXIOUS in Victory. Character development doesn't mean much when you don't want to see any of the characters in front of you to develop. I don't care for Vert, Blanc was insufferable in UD, Noire is just Erin Fitzgerald's personality spat onto Noire's scripting and Neptune is just obnoxious. Oh, did I tell you yet how much I absolutely fucking HATE Peashy, Plutia and Rei? My point is simple. Not only does the story drag on for far too long, but the characters are so bad that often the only CPU I constantly agreed with is a character I absolutely detest aka Vert. When your most insufferable character is the one you're most agreeing with, you have a bad game. Most of the time I wanted the Seven Sages to win because I detested the protagonists in this game so bad that I wanted a quick end to it all. Of course, even that incentive goes away once Copypaste and Anonydeath are gone and we're stuck with the most poorly written antagonist in the history of Neptunia. Rei Ryghts. Her backstory doesn't make sense, her mental progression is slower than a boulder trying to roll uphill and yet we're supposed to feel sorry for someone who got their Just Desserts? Personal subjectivity aside, you cannot tell me this game isn't a complete shitshow based on bad writing, insufferable characters and when you write better villains but can't write a good final villain, let alone good protagonists.

Interesting, didn’t know the mechanics was based on an another game. I agree the story is flesh out and all the main scenarios have voice dialogue, unlike Victory on the PS3, which is uber partial English Dub. The downside of this game is the game mechanics itself, especially micro-managing the move sets for it buttons. Overall, not a bad game, it just take time to get into it.

+AXE325XXEXE It would be good if he was accurate. It was Record of Agarest War that was Neptunia's predecessor, not Trinity Universe. All of those recognizable boss monsters? Agarest or EARLIER. Seriously, Trinity Universe "invented" NOTHING, just like how much they innovated. The dude did zero research, or at least not enough to fully corroborate his opinion. So he's either negligent or completely selective and cherrypicking with his "facts"

I'm still impressed that Compile Heart and Idea Factory made a game on a shoestring budget full of recycled assets and terrible gameplay and STILL managed to create an entire successful franchise out of it purely on the back of the game's writing and premise.

to add to the negatives...a big issue is you PERMANENTLY lose shares when any of the cpu's die, for...reasons, this can lead to broken trophies, and can permanently lock you out of even acquring the other 3 cpus if you aren't careful. I died very few times on my first playthrough and ended up unable to get the high share events for Lowee, which meant I couldn't get the completion trophy without a second playthrough. Beyond that 1. The Cpus join extremely late in the game, which, if you don't pay up for nisa/gust dlc means you are stuck with IF and Compa for about 90% of the game. 2. Balance is way off, with Neptune being WAY stronger than compa and IF, and having a gamebreaking skill (Neptune Break) that you can spam the entire game once you hit level 15. 3. Gust and Nisa joining your party but not being usable without a dlc battle pass is just kind of a dick way to ransom DLC. (that said, I love gust and nisa, broccoli and red aren't even close to being a passable replacement) 4. Running through that cave that connects nations...literally hundreds of times, with the same level 1 monsters and the high encounter rate suuuuuuuucks. 5. Like you said, performance, the game feels like it runs at like...10fps the entire time, and combat in general is extremely slow. 6. Side quests are all over the place, often you get offered quests far to high or low level for where you are, and the level descriptions often aren't accurate anyways. Also...timed quests that demand rare drops from enemies are a crapshoot, I had to do one several times before I got lucky enough to the get the right drop 5 times in the relatively short time limit. 7. Its frequently hard to tell what you need to do to advance the plot (an issue with later games too) where I frequently found myself jumping between nations just looking for a cutscene or sidequest and hoping it did something. 8. The out of place enemies again...remember that weird out of place spider/centuar thing at the start of Rebirth1? Yeah, you fight that for every single key fragment, over and over, and it sucks for a host of reason. 9. Like rebirth...that first fight with Black Heart is bananas...if you thought it was a rough difficulty spike there...here...oh my god. I'll agree with the positives though, namely that the game's writing is excellent, and its one of the funnier games out there...but god is it a slog to get through all the same. I'm very proud of my platinum in it, if only because it was a chore to get.

I really think the battle system was the first game's Achilles heel, other than that this game was pretty good.
@ultimo4luna6 жыл бұрын
I like the battle system of the first Neptunia game, if you are very strategic you can deal a massive damage to boss enemies, but some side quest are hard to complete do to not find the enemie to often or they don't drop the items the quest required, also getting your favorite goddess is till the end game and most do side quest to elevate their nation shears and it take quite a while, and as mention before to recluse this goddess the game don't give you any announcement that you can now star recluting them its just take you to the low normal ending or bad ending with just your three or if you pay dlc more characters, but the game have in game scenarios that should have been in ReBirth1 because that game recycle scenarios from Victory, well that's all I can say for this game a good first series step.

The recycle of assets is so ridiculous in Neptunia series, you will be going through the same dungeon over and over (but with a different name) in within the same game, then find it again in the next game, and play it a few time in repetition again in there. Also, you remember the old troupe of enemies being the same as prior ones but with a different color? well, in Neptunia, a different color palette is a luxury, so you'll find the same dragon model with different stats and name every time. Anyway, glad to know you're one of those persons who critizice the random encounters in RPGs. Saved me from the hassle of suscribing and all that.

I also feel this game has some of the best character portraits in the series. I’ve only beaten this one, mk2, and RB1, but I think I have enough experience with the series to have an opinion in it lmao. I kinda miss the sprites in cutscenes from this game. I kinda hate the gameplay and dungeons, but I feel the og HDN only really excelled in humor and characters anyway lol.

I Agree With You, I've Played The First Game, It's Fun At First And Very Funny. But During Boss Fights, Healing Thing Is A Massive Bitch Because Every Time I Got To Like 300 HP Out 7,000, They Just Would Never Heal, Sometimes Even Yelling At The Game Makes Them Heal Sometimes. But Not A Bad Game Though But It's Still The Worst Neptunia Game.

This Nep isn't bad, it's just special. I think NA and EU people don't understand some Japanese gameplay styles (especially from 00's and earlier) and this is the issue. Another issue is optimization, but there RPCS3 team is trying to make an emulator which can run this game on 30/60 FPS constantly (but it's not perfect yet).

How did you get the Godesss in the first neptuna game? They never join your party
@NekuShasu6 жыл бұрын
You need all 3 for the true ending, how you get them into your party is quite easy, have Neptune's memory restored, get the nations shares up to a certain point (something around 30-50%, can't remember exaclty) and then you unlock a new scenes, but save before you watch them because you have to fight all 3 in a 1 on 1 match, after that they join you and you get to even name them (my guess is that Noire, Blanc and Vert wasn't the cannon names yet for the first HDN). They are always Lv.60 when they join you so it's a late/end game side quest.
