I really enjoyed this discussion, and completely agree with the course it took, with playing for both, or for the triumph. Honesty though, I think that many times, when this question is asked, the person is actually trying to discover whether you enjoy playing cooperatively or competitively. If there is a person who decidedly enjoys the competition, they are playing to win, and of course, that is where the fun lies, for them. I believe many times, competitive people view those who play cooperative games as only playing for fun, but of course, the group is still playing to win the objective, which is fun for them. I think it is quite valuable to learn whether a person is more cooperative or competitive. Those two types can end up in a personality clash which can sometimes ruin a gaming experience. Knowing that ahead of time can ward off that bad experience.

As for future topics, I'd like a discussion on Luck vs Skill, and a discussion on rubber banding as a game mechanic.

I rarely don't try to win when playing, but I only play because it is fun. If I'm in a position where I am unlikely to win, I would still make the move I believe would increase my odds the most - Or increase my positional-ranking. I believe all players should play trying to win, as this collaboratively maximises the fun among all players. I do have one friend who plays specifically for fun, and not to win. An example of this would be playing TTR, they made all their actions drawing train cards from the deck. This resulted in only 5 train cards remaining, and 3 of them were rainbows. As a result, we were stuck in an infinite loop of replenishing the trade row, and the rules don't clarify how to deal with that scenario. They had a lot of fun. Everyone else hated it. Other examples of things they've done for their own fun in games include: Buying out the Curse pile in Dominion. Blowing up their pot every turn in Quacks. Trying to consume as much time as possible acting on-the-fence about trivia games. ...Yeah - We try not to play with them anymore if it can be helped.

I play for fun. I prefer cooperative games when given the chance.

I feel like there is a significant difference between doing your best to win, and playing 'nicely', where you don't go out of your way to attack or inhibit other players.
