Grease Pencil has become a trending tool among 2D/3D hybrid artists, and a more accessible and intuitive method for illustrators and 2D animators to work in 3D. This talk explores Sharon Snow's (Sony Pictures Imageworks) take on it, from pursuing a stylized, painted look, to applying traditional perspective drawing disciplines in 3D. This presentation is a runthrough of grease pencil methods and workflows for beginners, or people who are used to 3D looking for a fresh perspective.

On the fear that this talk would be boring. I'll say that I looked through the list of this years blenderCon videos and watched this before any of the other NPR related stuff because Grease Pencil always seems fun but I keep wondering how to get started as it feels the tools and names of tools are so far removed from how my brain wants to work. She kept it interesting and fun and put in valuable information. Even doing some faux interactive storytelling while she's at it. So. No. I will not virtually walk away feeling this was the boring talk of the Con. Instead, it motivated me to give Grease Pencil a few more goes!

I actually got emotional when she kept her mother's drawing, because it made sense that her mom would think she was doing it ironically, and yet from just her short talk you could already tell that she kept it because she truly appreciated the gesture and what the drawing represents.

she sounds like an amazing person, loved her talk so much, for some reason it was very easy to be attentive, perhaps because of her humble demeanor

this is crazy, i chose to be a 3d animator because i cant draw to save my own life, but she draws in 2d in a 3d environment so she doesn't have to deal with polygons that's wild

Nicely done. Too bad you were so nervous, but understandable. Seeing others adapted workflow is alway valuable since the 2D application is so frustratingly flexible.

Best way to achieve 2D animation with 3D in my theory is something similar to what Arc system works is doing, use painting textures in 3D environments, cel shading characters, use grease pencil for shaking lines and limited frame animations and use motion blur for fast movements. This technique should be used for a lot of cartoon games even RPG advanture. 60fps on a cartoon game looks cheap in my opinion. Grasblue game is a good example of this.

I don't get why she labelled her grease pencil creations as "3D", it's 2D flat planes isn't it? It looks so much better than regular 3D models. Maybe it's her teacher that labelled it that, but it should be called 2.5D at the very least.

the reason i believe most artists, including myself, like to say that they are 3d is because using grease pencil (or planes for that matter), you can use the full potential of the 3d software, from lighting to shaders, to adding photorealistic grass on the ground on which might your "2d" plane character might stand on, almost all of which are impossible to achieve in a 2d workflow and/or software. Also you might be surprised how many "2d" planes I use in my 3d workflow on a daily basis.

Would 1937 Snow White be the first 3d film by using the multi-plane camera? The camera does move in 3d space that can’t be achieved in strictly 2d. For me toy story is the first 3d and grease pencil is 2d. Classifications for film school and festivals will probably vary depending on who is in charge and what definition they are going by. I remember an art teacher mention never ending debates between drawing or painting classification

This is a really great demonstration of how this tool works; it really inspired me to get started with it. But I will critique the way she communicates with the audience. Had you prepared more for this presentation (I don't think you didn't), it would have gone more smoothly.
