Playing with some 1 3/4" or 45mm Chinese Therapy (AKA Baoding) balls. I recently got the hang of doing up to 5 balls in my left hand at once. I'm not perfect yet, but I've only seen one other person (Jingluo) do 5 or more. Who else can do this? I'd love to see some video responses.

@Mongular It depends on the set. They're about as loud as a windchime. They can be a little annoying to some people, but they also make these without chimes, or in other materials like stone which are much quieter. Stone is actually my favorite because they're quiet, and are a bit heavier.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm amazed by that guy. I have pretty small hands, so there's no possible way I could ever do six with this size ball. Maybe with the smallest ones I have, but I don't have enough of them to practice. I started when I was about your age, but never did anything more than just 2 in my left hand until about 6 months ago. It's a cool little thing to know how to do, and it's also good for your hands. I'm really interested in learning more contact juggling now.

They can sometimes be hard to find. The place I find mine mostly sells martial arts equipment. There are a lot of places online to find them, also. Golf balls may be a little light for your needs, but it can't hurt to start with them. You're going to drop them a lot, anyway. The therapy balls have a certain amount of weight to press on the meridians of your hands and golf balls may not stimulate them the same way. Billiard balls would work, but are quite large.

When I got my first set, I practiced about 3 hours a day for a week until I could spin them without them touching. Then about an hour a day and weeks later, I could go the other direction. It really only takes a few months to get fluid with them. It takes much longer to learn how to walk around and move with them without throwing them all over. Good luck and thanks for the comments!

Yeah, they're extremely addicting. I found a place locally that sold a few different sizes and styles and pretty much bought them out over the next few months. I've got about 23 sets total. Mostly cloisonne, 4 sizes of chrome (5 sets in the 45mm size), and a couple stone sets. I've also got some 2 1/2'' clear acrylic ones that I've been meaning to do a video with. If you're near chinatown in NYC, go there. You can haggle for a better price. I haven't often paid more than $10 for a set

Yeah, that will come with time. It's a matter of being able to relax the hands so that the ball finds the path and just follows it. I got good at it by lying on the couch so if they fell, they were close, and slowly opening up the hand. It's hard to describe, but when you stop thinking about what your hand is doing, it becomes muscle memory. Eventually you don't think about it at all. I can't do this motion without spheres in my hand.

Hello Michael. it seems it has pasted 10 years when you took this video. You have grasped some skills so that can spin them freely. Very great and excellent. When you can play them well, then you can enjoy it.

My hands are very small as well. The distance from the line in my wrist to the tip of my middle finger is only 7 1/2", or 19 cm but i can still spin balls up to 2 1/2" (65mm) without them touching. Hand size isn't that important. Your hand will stretch eventually to be able to spin larger balls. And yes, the ones I'm using in the video are 45mm.

In our China, just our master can play many balls by one hand, the most quantity is 80pcs. He putted several balls on a plate ,then put another plate , until arriving in 80 pcs ball. Then rotate. He is more than 90 years old now.

My mom just gave me her old set. I just started and it is addicting. :) I might be getting a set of four leaf clover ones. She might get elephant ones and my friend might be getting rainbow ones.

Thanks for including the drops, that proves you are human. I was impressed the most by the effect of 1 sphere orbiting around the other. Wow88

Thanks! I drop them less and less over time. Are you the real Greg Irwin? I'm subscribed to your other channel if you are. I'm surprised you've never tried that one. It's pretty easy to learn. It's just doing the same motion, but rotating your hand with one of the balls and trying to visually make it "stay in place". I learned it from the person who introduced me to this.

If you never played this ball, it is better to choose diameter 40mm . This ball is smaller, can control easily. also have 45-50-55mm . If you are good at it, can choose bigger and heavier. Some of balls are solid ball, no chiming. Also very perfect for practice.

@ttpiett Exactly. It's a light pressure, but having one on top tends to push the other 3 apart, so you have to try to keep pressure on the lower 3 to keep them together.

@TimichCop Being good at this and having a large collection of Baoding balls usually leads to dirty jokes from friends. "Can I play with your balls?" is the most common joke I get. I enjoy the double entendres that result from this skill.

when you were doing 4 of them with one on top do have to put a lot pf pressure to keep the bottom 3 together while rotating

@DiaboliCkification Thank you! I started using these left handed about 12 years ago but only started practicing with the right hand about 2 years ago. I play guitar which is why my left hand is more advanced.

Actually, I will use these occasionally before playing video games to loosen up my hands. My hands react faster and move smoother. My CoD skills are pretty damn good if I do say so myself...

@MrKeinanen Check out my video on Choosing a Chinese therapy ball. I usually recommend starting with metal ones, since you'll drop them a lot. 40-45 mm is a good starting size for average hands.

Haha. Thanks. Yeah, 5 is my lucky number, so I was determined to learn it no matter how much of a pain in the ass it was. It took a few months to get that down. The most I've seen with one hand is 8. Look for videos from Jingluo (vincent).

@LucisFerre1 not true. They can touch. I can rotate then without them touching (this video is almost 4yrs old) but its fine if they touch. You can find a video here on KZbin of people in China using 3 at a time and they are touching. It just takes more skill to keep them separate. For contact juggling, 3 will touch often. 3 touching also forms the base for a 4 ball pyramid.

Over the past month or so I've gotten the motions to become smoother, but the movement of my fingers is dramatically different from yours. My fingers have to practically pass the balls to each other, while yours appear to remain completely relaxed. Will this come with more practice?

no video tricks at all. Doing one is actually hard because the weight of a single ball isn't balanced in your hand. When you've been doing two long enough, you'll start to notice that each ball will take the same path around the palm each time as if it's almost on a track. Next, try to line up the ball with a spot on the floor so it appears not to move. There's a fine line between using Baoding balls and what contact jugglers call "palm spinning". I can do a basic video tutorial if you'd like.
