Ha, I feel ya. I'm in the DyLighted binge watch stage right now. I just wanted to get a little basic strategy to beat my brother. He gloats too much when he wins. You know how those family matches go. Then I stumbled upon DyLighted. Now I am totally hooked. I really had no idea how complex and interesting Catan strategy can be. I love stuff like that. And dylighted is a great teacher so I'm loving this.

At 17:16 Purple probably ruined her chances by rushing her second city. By building instead a settlement as 8-3 would have unblockable wheat, and having already unblockable ore could then go for army quite easily.
@DyLightedCatan5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I think the biggest mistake was not going for more development cards.
@rhysgriffiths96755 жыл бұрын
I think a better settlement placement for red would have been to take the 9-6-3 and point the road towards the brick port, and then taken the 5-10 with the 3-1 port, he would have been in a really powerful position with high ore wheat sheep, a brick port to go with his unneeded brick, and expansion spots around the side of the board and desert which would be fairly uncontested. It would be a safe, reliable victory. Also I feel like purple should have had a pretty cruisy victory after such a formidable start, I think he should have started buying knights as early as his initial city, not just to secure his win condition, but rather because he was such an obvious leader that he needed to protect his tiles with knights. If you skim through the game you'll see his 10 wheat was blocked almost permanently and that was definitely his downfall.
@DyLightedCatan5 жыл бұрын
I agree with your analysis. Typically I dislike taking coastal locations as 4th position but the 5/10 is special in that it has a 3:1 port and it doesn't get blocked very much. I also agree with how purple lost, they needed to secure their win condition and didn't protect their wheat. Thanks for commenting and watching!

The no-wheat ploy looks pretty shrewd in hind-sight. Recognizing that Orange would have little choice but to trade their wheat away for anything could easily have been overlooked. You did benefit from the 9 out-performing expectations. Definitely interesting to watch as it opens up the range of what can be a winning setup.
@DyLightedCatan5 жыл бұрын
Danfromfreddybeach totally agree with your comment. It’s often overlooked in a game of what trade opportunities you have with your opponent. I definitely have been exploring with new setups and am quite impressed with what you can do with a “non optimal setup”. I feel as if I’ve been putting too much of an emphasis on Ore wheat and sheep. Thanks for comment!

two of 9's rolled after he had already secured the win, so it was really not to out of line. The 9 should of rolled 5 times, but it actually rolled 6 times before he secured the win. The single roll for a road, especially when they are both citied up is really really hard to beat.
@danfromfreddybeach5 жыл бұрын
@@joecamerer2865 Fair enough, it was perhaps a bit lazy of me to evaluate the roll chart as of the end of the game. The order numbers come up and whether the hex was blocked when the number up are quite important. One thing I would like to have in the stats is the number of resources you missed out on due to being blocked. That would be at least as useful as the number of resources that get stolen. It would also be helpful to see the number of resources lost due to seven being rolled when at 8 cards or more.

I've played Catan for the first time in my life a week ago. I've purchased a copy the next day. I won 2 out of 3 games with common sense and it's really cool seeing how far this game can go with complex strategies. I've looked around and your channel has given me everything I looked for. I rarely comment on youtube stuff and it's always when someone is doing something really good. I don't know what are you going through or whatever, so I feel like I should tell you - you are doing a great job, keep doing so!

Purple could have easily won this game, she had so powerful position. But she made a mistake that didn't buy dev cards in early game. Her only strong wheat spot was blocked and couldn't defend it with a knight. Nice win @DyLighted - Catan! You made the best of this no wheat situation. You could adapt to the circumstances and took advantage of the other players' mistakes. GG :)

Great Video! Very Terrible trade by Red at about 22 minute mark. Great example of the impact of production in the wrong ratios. Orange's 3rd settlement was useless even though its 8 pips. 3:1 port would have been much better. 28 minute mark I was bit worried you were going to get locked in and not get longest road. Good example of knowing the relative strengths of your opponents. Orange was not scary and you just traded all game with him for your wheat. I think road + settle and keep the soldier would have been better at minute 33:30. All you need at that point is city, city, road? But the way you did it worked out much better. Trade at 37minute was game over.
@DyLightedCatan5 жыл бұрын
Charles Tetrault Thank you for the comment! I disagree with you on the road settlement being the right play at the 28 minute mark. As you get closer and closer to winning, Orange will be more hesitant to trade with you. Attempting to get the 4 wheat for the 2 cities may be difficult. Buying a dev card couldn’t have hurt me in that situation. A knight lets me get a new win condition, a VP saves me a city, a mono is a mono, a YoP can help me get the city (probably the worst one), and a Road building would be useful for the road battle. I still stand by my decision. Though, I do think it was a questionable play to play the offensive knight. Thank you again for the comment and for watching!
@charlestetrault69455 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks. Yes makes sense the dev card gives you way more ways to win.
@ryancparker3 жыл бұрын
I think being in good position when the 9s started popping like crazy won you this one. Red screwed up giving away longest road and orange should not have been trading with you with that many cards in your hand. Good format.
@Meristem9683 жыл бұрын
Purple should have built on the ore port instead of just 5-2. That probably would have won them the game
@brendanrobertson59664 жыл бұрын
Without buying Dev Cards, you only need 8 wheat + 4 sheep for the whole game to reach 10 points (with Longest Road). The problem is trading them at the right time.
@gilnelson32174 жыл бұрын
Why 4 sheep? Wouldn't 2 sheep do the job?
@mauer13 жыл бұрын
2 starting settlements That means you need additional 6 points with longest road. Thats 4 settlements and 2 cities. So because you can only have 5 settlements at the same time you definitly need 2 cities to be able to make more settlements.

What happens if you start with the 4 5 10 purely for blocking purposes?
@DyLightedCatan4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for suggesting the idea! I didn’t do the 4-5-10 because 1) I lose access to ports. I potentially get a strong 3rd expansion spot, but not having a port in game is difficult. 2) It’s too much sheep that I can’t really do anything with 3) I really need to be on the wood since I anticipate I’ll be getting the brick as my last pick. I hope that helps!

The caveat for "No wheat = defeat" should probably be "no _good_ trade sources", or another qualification. You did say in commentary what made it good but I'm just saying in case it gets misleading when someone tries to remember the rule long after the video. There've been a few amateur, 3 player games where I've tried this kind of strategy, initially having or thinking my position complements another's, only to end up redundant when they've advanced with a port or better spot. 3 player boards and no red number limitations are probably factors in this, as well as my less comprehensive understanding of catan at those times, but I think that shows how this caveat must be used carefully. What was so good about what you did was how you influenced the situation with orange so they'd have to remain trade partners with you. Some luck played out in that your respective positions complemented each other really well and they also went for more wheat. You might not have been able to pull this off if they weren't also crippled without your assistance specifically (not as willing to trade with the other two (red due to road fight, which orange walked into, and purple appearing as the leader) ). Regardless, this meant you had a good/reliable wheat source and not just _any_ alternate wheat source _and_ you played the game in such a way as to bend it to your favour.
@dravocado10615 жыл бұрын
Lol Orange with that low IQ play in the beginning, not seeing that red will cut them off with the free road. And Red really made it easy for you in the end by trading 3 roads for useless cards. Super greedy and super bad. Both good examples of why you need to track cards and act accordingly, otherwise you're just easy prey.
@DyLightedCatan5 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with the takeaways. Tracking cards is a necessity.

"If this is Orange's strategy, he has to start on the 6/5/12" Is this a bad evaluation of Orange's first settlement? Was the strategy flawed all along? What should he have done instead?
@existentiallamp4 жыл бұрын
Because they wanted to get the wheat port, starting on the 6/5/12 is critical because they go before red and the free road they get guarenteed gets the wheat port. Not doing that crippled their gameplan because red also had a free road and cut them off as what happened in game
