No you can insert one while your playing.

3 years late, but ingame you could just go to the main menu after inserting the memory card, or just make an attempt to save after it’s inserted. If you’re trying to load a save you’d typically have to go the the main menu of whatever game it is. But on some games like Half Life you could do that from the pause menu, which is kinda like a main menu as well

I have a PS 2 Slim and when I'm in browser looking at both Memory cards, there is NO option to format only to copy or delete. My issue is that the system sees the two slots but when trying to save data on a particular game It says memory card not detected wtf ???

I’m having a similar issue, were you able to find a solution? my ps2 recognizes my memory card when I access them in “Browser” . I can see my saved games, I can copy or erase them, but when I want to load or save a game, my console tell me to insert a memory card. I have a few PS2 consoles (slim, if that matters) and I get the same problem with each of them.

@@tyronedejesus4098 It's been a while since looking at this but, it's possible that it may need reseating in the slot. The connectors get corroded and dirty over time so the connection isn't that great. Maybe the cards are the problem. You can buy replacement cards pretty cheap. Maybe try and get a couple of new ones and compare. I have plenty spare ones I can go to incase I strike issues. Sorry I couldn't be much help.

@@abdelrhman1771 You need a program that formats the memory cards on your ps2, download it and put it on a USB stick and use it via uLaunchElf on your PS2, if the memory card doesn't work it must be defective

I really don’t get it with this video! Like wtf is he trying to do tho!! like dude, just click and tap yes to format ur 2nd PS2 MC My guy! It’s probably why the browser or the Console is telling u to format it now with ur #2 MC for ur PlayStation 2 tho! And also, another thing!
