Yep, same here. It's definitely really noisy compared to my Noctua cooled PC, but I find it both quieter than my PS3 SuperSlim and not really bothersome while using headphones.

I understand but two things here. How technically will PS5 be? Tech hasnt advanced in gaming by that much. Also time wise, you still have plenty of life for a new pro. If a PS5 released in 2020, devs will need at least two more years to figure out how to bring the best out of Sony's architecture. So games will still release for old gens at a nice rate

For the first gen and second gen, you just need to change the APU thermal paste to thermal grizzly kryonaut and change the thermal pads of the ram chips to to a high quality one. Like Gelid GP Extreme. Mine has been whisper quiet ever since. It's been a year now. Still whisper quiet. 7100 model.

I have the red dead redemption 2 bundle its model cuh-7215b figure 8 power supply, my wii u not playing a game is louder than my pro when playing shadow of the tomb raider at 4k its very quiet ive tested many games ffxv, mgsv, skyrim,destiny 2 all at 4k and skyrim and ffxv on high settings are the only 2 that you can hear the fan turn up but still quieter than my wii u im amazed at how amazingly smooth gameplay is for shadow of the tomb raider looks amazing no frame stuttering at all and pro is super qiuet during hours of 4k gameplay i upgraded to pro at just the right time

Another difference is the I/O port labels are located underneath the ports, whereas the 7100 series and less has the labels above.

except the machine itself is measuring hotter inside too, therefore this model appears to be removing less heat than the original. they have the same chips so whats actually happening, is the heat is just building up more internally and coming out hotter. part of why its quieter, the fan is moving less cfm through the console(cubic feet per minute of air).... not that i think its a problem. sony obviously concluded the machine can take some extra degrees in trade off for less decibels...

It seems like the improvements to noise are largely due to less aggressive fan cooling, accepting higher temperatures for lower noise output. That raises the question of what exactly is Sony is doing with the model revisions. I seem to recall them making some changes to the heatsink mounting system and there's the power supply revision in this latest one, but that's about it that I've seen.

I got a 7215B model without Red Dead around September in the states. The Pro had been sold out all month so when I finally saw one in-stock I went and bought one and ended up with this model. Can confirm, it's quiet as a mouse. Especially compared to my launch model base PS4. That thing can sound like a jet engine at times.

There is something weird here. The hotter the temps at exhaust the cooler the system should be, this means hot air is being vacated more efficiently. So seeing how 7200 runs hotter and its exhaust is hotter too would mean its cooling is less efficient, which could be result of fan redesign or simply fan speed change.

It's a good improvement, but not only do I think that I got a "good version" of the launch PS4 Pro as even when listening to it, it never got THAT annoying. But on top of that I use headphones for playing games, always. So I don't hear the fan noise at all. Come summer I'd like my cooler launch PS4 Pro over a newer model I guess. :)

Running quieter also means its running hotter, which means reduced lifespan. I started using a laptop cooling pad under my PS4 Pro and now it almost never ramps up the fan. I did the same thing with my Xbox One X, which is already way quieter than the PS4 Pro, but now it runs even quieter too. You dont need to run out and buy this new PS4 Pro to get a quieter system, just increase the airflow around the system and make sure to clean out the fan once in a while

I've been playing Red Dead 2 a few hours a day on the new console, and so far it hasn't made a peep. It has yet to kick into overdrive, or even become noticeable! It gets hot as balls during gameplay, but the fan is a low thrum instead of a high whine. I'm very happy since it replaced my original launch PS4 that sounds like a jet engine.

The hotter the exhaust the more heat is being removed from inside the system. They're probably using better thermal paste,a bigger heatsink or both. The reason why the Xbox one is so quiet is because it has a massive heatsink.

I have the 7215B model. I got it on October 4th, 2018 from Gamestop just before the Red Dead Redemption II Bundle was released. The store clerk mentioned that it was recently shipped from Sony. My guess is that they reduced fan speed curve resulting in less noise, less power consumption (maybe not), but that increased the heat due to less fan power. *Old model: More speed = Cooler & Noisy* *New model: Less speed = Warmer & Quiet*

I hear that noise can generally depend on how intensive a game is that you're playing however. Also, I forgot to say, that's in 4K, HDR mode with the most intensive colour output settings and boost-mode applied.

The fan noise is not quite as annoying as the coil whine with certain games at certain resolutions and detail settings. It sounds like angry bees trapped in an empty soda can. It's bad enough that we have to put up with this from various expensive high-end GPUs in an otherwise silent PC. Is it that difficult to source properly dampened inductor coils?

I was thinking getting PS4 Pro before and pre-loading the digital version of RDR2.... but I don't regret waiting until launch day to get this bundle - for the BEST PS4 Pro hardware. the hotter the case and exhaust temps the better.. because the power consumption on all was approximately the same, the fact that more heat is seen on the case body and exhaust just means a lot less is staying in the chip, meaning it is actually running a lot cooler than the previous models.

I've got the release pro and I sent my console to a repair shop. They cleaned the console applied new thermal paste and changed the thermal pads on the ram. Console is much more quiet now. Main problem of the console is the garbage thermal paste they use or maybe they don't apply enough thermal paste. You should also use a dust cover and dust filters. Otherwise your console will get dusty and noisy because the consoles doesn't even have a cheap ass dust filter and all your dust will be in the heatsink.

My PS4 bought in 2015 gets sooooo hot I need to clean out the fans I guess. Anyone know what happens if it overheats?

Picked up a CUH-7200 model recently for 4k games and I don't find it quieter at all, in fact from my experience it's just as noisy as the first model, constantly goes off like a jet engine on Genshin impact & RDR2..so i opened it up to see if dust build up might be the cause but no there was hardly any dust in the fan or the heat sink. People are over exaggerating about it being quieter so it gets hotter for no reason at all as it makes a bitter difference with the fan noise.

I agree the 7200 is nice but even after clearing the fan when you get those peak visual scenes in games like Spider-Man, God of War and Dark Souls 3 you will hear it but... I've sort of grown accustomed to it myself. I bought a 7100B most recently and I'm interested to know if any difference will be apparent.

You're always very in depth in your videos so i thought you where gonna address it, but you didn't so i guess you just don't know how decibels work. For every 10 decibel the sound doubles, so 55 to 48 doesn't sound like much but its a very huge difference in sound.

Could the higher exhaust temps of the 7200 be contributed to a more efficient heat transfer? More heat is being pulled away from the hardware. Would also like to add, I've never been bothered by the "noise" of the cooling fan. On the occasion I noticed it, I would just realize it needed the extra umph from the fan to cool the system. I'm OK with that.

I'm currently on my forth ps4 pro CUH-7216B with severe Coil Whine. The sound is unbearable and kicks in on all kinds of games I have been throwing at it. Taking this one back to the shop as well and proclaiming loudly that Sony obviously do not care for catching this type of issue during quality control. Stay away from purchasing PS4 Pros until Sony have greatly improved their efforts in producing these units. If I manage to bring home four PS4 Pros in a row, all with this issue (even from different shops) it must count as a "default" feature of the unit. Digital Foundry should update this review to reflect this.

You must not game on PC then because any gaming PC is gonna be much louder than any PS4 Pro can get when you combine the noise of hard drives and fans unless you are spending a lot of money on SSD and on fans that run quiet. Any fan noise from PS4 Pros can be mitigated by using head or earphones and anyone who says otherwise is lying because headphones can be turned up to where they will cause hearing damage. Not to mention you can get noise canceling headphones.

The figure 8 power supply version is used on the original PS4s in certain regions as well. Both my original and revised standard PS4s have this.

I love my pro, I installed new much quieter fans myself, although that may have voided the warranty, I really don't care as it was a fairly easy to install new fans, and I didn't have to mess around with the SOC or anything so there's no issue with it having been opened and it runs not only quiter, but also at a lower temperature, for that I used a few case modifications I found here on KZbin, pretty much just adding more ventilation, and by using a blower style cover for the one fan, it ejects hot air without any of it leaking into the case. KZbin PS4Pro mods get your PS4Pro running cooler and quieter than any other method as expensive as buying a new Pro, if you are one of the many people out there who don't mind doing a bit of modifying your console, I'd highly suggest you look it up on YT, most videos are pretty much the same, but they'll give you advice on what fans are best, and what to do physically to your console without damaging it.

I think i have a launch ps4 pro. I cleaned mine and took off the long skinny back plate. Taking off the back plate deff made a difference, better flow of the heat. Will get things plugged into the back hotter but i have seen no problems

I've had the noise issue with the PlayStation 3 Slim and I held off on buying any type of PlayStation 4 until this one. - I know the 5 will be out in just over a year, but I don't want to spend a lot of money on a console with a limited list of games (as in exclusives, as I rather invest in a PC as I always have). - So I was happy to find out about the noise-reduction in the PS4 Pro and with it on sale I finally ordered it last weekend. I already own one game and have pre-ordered another, both being exclusives, so I'll need a system to be able to play them. It's the platform exclusivity in full working order, except that I'm a really late customer. - But otherwise I would've gone with a much lower priced new or refurbished one and modified it with liquid cooling. Around 45dBs is still significant, but if I put it away somewhere it will help make it acceptable. - Just too bad they didn't upgrade it and market it with an SSD... Something I'll still have to consider.

Wouldn't you want your exhaust to be hotter? Meaning it's expelling more of the hot air, instead of keeping it inside?

Higher exhaust temperature doesn't necessarily mean more heat. If they didn't make any significant change in the heat conductance between the chip and the radiator, just reduced the fan speed to achieve lower noize level, then the heat is transfered by smaller amount of air which gets hotter obviously. If the thermal design is basically unchanged then hotter radiator means hotter operation for the chip.

You can use better heat transfer solutions (better thermal paste or even liquid metal compounds, heatpipe+fins radiator instead of solid extruded heatsink) to reduce the overall heat resistance of the cooler system, therefore reduce the temperature difference between the chip and the radiator surface that contacts the air. Then lower airflow (means higher exhaust air temperature at the given amount of power dissipated) is sufficient to maintain the same core temperatures. Or you can use the same airflow as before, maintain same exhaus temps while reduce core temps. Or anything between the two means lower core temps but higher exhaust temps. But in this particular case I don't see any significant change in the cooler system. So they probably just reduced the fan speed to achieve lower noize level and either sacrificed some thermal headroom or used better thermal paste on this model.

I’m just going to swap out the louder Delta fan in my 7100 to the quieter Nidec fan (EBay) that’s in the 7200, change the thermal paste, and thermal pads. I should get better temps, and less fan noise.

I usually wear a headset when gaming and I've never had a gripe with the CUH-7000 model that I own. It's very quiet compared to a launch base PS4, and I'd rather have the better fan cooling anyway.

I’ve made some measurements on my own since I have a SLM and a day one PsPro, these are the result 2mt away from the TV. Complete silence: Min 25 Avg 29 Max 35 - TV sound level 4/100 (speech indistinguishable): Min 25 Avg 30 Max 41 - Writing on a block notes with a pencil: Min 25 Avg 31 Max 43 - Ps4 on playing Fortnite(5 minutes): Min 27 Avg 31 Max 37 - Ps4 on playing Gow on disc(5 minutes): Min 26 Avg 35 Max 41 - TV sound level 6/10 (barely distinguishable audio): Min 26 Avg 32 Max 46 - Tv sound level 10/100 (the volume I use when people in the house are asleep): Min 27 Avg 40 Max 50. The tv program I used for testing did not feature music or loud sound, just speech. The louder the pro got was while waiting to load GoW, the fan was at top speed and the value I recorded was 41(also Blue Ray was running). Obviously different result would recorded if you use the Ps4 on you desk and you are 50cm away from it since the sound propagate in air(and trough solids) and the further away you are the less noise arrives to your hears.

Bought a 7100 a week before the RDR2 bundle came out, I can't say I regret it because the changes are somewhat minor but at least mine is quieter than the launch model.

Why do you need a gaming monitor for the ps4? The FPS is capped at 60 and the latency can't be pushed too low. Even the cheapest monitors can meet these expectations. Gamer monitors tipically focus on the high refresh rate and low reaction time wich can't be utilized with a playstation. Your best interest is a good display panel with deep contrast and nice colors.

I have a launch Pro and it’s fine. I hear the fans but they are not so overly loud that it becomes distracting when playing a game. I don’t think it’s worth upgrading from a 7000 to 7200 version.

Seconded. I slapped an SSD in my launch Pro and its all I need for years. I actually promised myself I wouldn't even buy a PS5 for at least 3 years after launch so that I can get all the PS5 Pro / PS5 Slim nonesense out of the way lol
