PlayStation Appoints 2 CEOs: Hermen Hulst & Hideaki Nishino

Jim Ryan left PlayStation in March, but now new management is here. Hermen Hulst and Hideaki Nishino will report to Hiroki Totoki in the new structure of the company. This news also accompanied details about how the PlayStation 5 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S 5:1 but that number may be slightly inflated when you look at total overall sales.

In a press release titled New Management Structure of Sony Interactive Entertainment, PlayStation head Jim Ryan announced his departure and plans to retire in the Spring of 2024. Hiroki Totoki will likely be replacing Jim Ryan as the current PlayStation CEO. The PlayStation Boss Jim Ryan is retiring as CEO of PlayStation and will be leaving the company. This is massive PlayStation news today that will likely have an impact on the next several years for the company. The PlayStation CEO cited the location of the job as one reason, but not much else. Jim Ryan retirement comes with what seems like a restructuring and we will see if someone longer-term replaces him.

I hope this is a positive move for SIE. They have made a couple stumbles lately with pushing for PSN accounts. We all know that Playstation will require PSN accounts for all their PC releases going forward the TOS just needs to be very clear on this issue. I think splitting the responsibilities and making very clear who is responsible for what is a good thing. Allows each individual to do their thing and report to their boss. I agree that both Playstation and XBox are going to move away from exclusives and sell games anywhere they can. Not sure what this will do with Game Pass or Sony's equivalent. It's going to be interesting to see how Playstation will merge the PC side of things with the Console side of things, because as an owner of both the XBSX, and PS5 I would like to just have an app that allows me to play my libraries on my preferred device. For me it'd probably be my IPad Pro 😁 At this point I am thinking that we need to think of XBox or Playstation as a Brand, like Nike or Adidas. What will drive the sales of each brand is their content now days. Not the console, which has been admitted by XBox and now Sony seems to finally agree. The next few years going to be interesting to see how these two companies adapt their business for the new market.

One small correction is that the 5 to1 Xbox sells where coming from the same 3 months of sells. It wasn't life time or the year. One more thing is that the PS4 sold for 399.99 and had a price cut after its 2nd yr. While the PS5 had its price go up. Just wanted to make some things clear for everyone when we compare the numbers.

12:05 Just a quick note here, and please correct me if I am wrong, but traditionally console sales don't slow down so sharply at this stage of the game, instead this is usually when they blow up for the reason that this genki person noted. Supply constraints are cleared and manufacturing has been near perfected. More importantly, this is when these guys start hitting Mass Market Pricing on their consoles hitting that sweet 199 - 299 price point. They are a year ahead of the normal curve.

Unfortunately that's no more stupid than Microtransactions in games. The general audience doesn't really care. Ads have actually proven themselves as a genius way to make more money off of consumers who don't realize how much their data and time is worth. Google for example makes far FAR more off of individuals through ads than they ever would have through a paid model and now people are so used to free search engines they'd get angry if Google took away ads and told everyone to pay X amount per month. Heck, fortnite is already basically one giant ad with all the collaborations and Microtransactions. And it's the most popular game out right now.

EUROPE is the only region where the PS5 is trailing behind the PS4. The PS5 is being sold at US$600 there when the PS4 was sold at $425 at the same point in its life.

Really the whole industry is going more multiplatform due to rising AAA game costs. Or at least the parts of it that aren't already. The one exception is Nintendo because the power of Switch means their games are not as expensive to make. They will have to follow that trend eventually though. However, since they are following the Switch model again and thus are not going to have as powerful a console it will likely not be necessary for them until either the end of the Switch 2 cycle or even the Switch 3.

My only question is, if Sony starts launching all their games day and date with pc what incentive do people have to get a PlayStation? That’s why I think that will not happen unless Sony starts making gpu’s and good luck catching Nvidia on that. People keep saying the console market is changing but I guess that doesn’t apply to Nintendo?? They made the Wii U and bounced back with an under powered machine. The industry may be changing but people want good games period. Microsoft can’t get market share because they can’t make great games. It's more than people are calling out exclusivity deals in general more this generation than last. As cross play and cross progression become more common, people are expecting a better baseline. For example there's a LOT more focus on libraries following players now (at least basic backwards compatibility) even though Nintendo pretty much never had consistent compatibility through generations and PS and Xbox didn't launch with it at all last gen. I think it's great. There's far more awareness on the consumer end for what should be basic norms and more accountability on publisher ends. It also helps that increasing dev costs are pushing all third parties to abandon exclusives. Even Sony and Microsoft are taking routes people never expected (Sony on PC and Microsoft on other consoles) because they need new avenues for growth.

These corpos execs are all trying to prepare for a gaming recession. Because we all know it’s coming. This could just be smoke and mirrors. Mega corpo publishers are going to try to implement ads within games (it ain’t just EA). We need to be ready to reject and boycott this. Like Helldivers, only times 100. Example: like many execs, Andrew Wilson is a cancer on the industry (the worst of them), and he’s terrified of losing his yearly bonus and pleasing his shareholders’ greed and “continuous financial growth at any cost” mandates. We need to be ready and not let all this corporate speak fool us. Especially parents giving their children access to credit cards. Fight the addictive nature of this and see it all for what it really is: never ending greed.

I didn't like Jim Ryan at all. I think his success was basically riding the coat tails of the ps4. Hopefully these new guys can pick up the mantle and genuinely knock it out the park with the ps6. Also, apparently one of them is a vr fan so maybe he'll revamp a bit of good will with psvr2. I play mostly flat while vr gets its stuff together but you can't deny that gt7 in the psvr2 is completely insane. I can't see now how xbox can capture any sort of zeitgeist now. I feel its going to be ps6 vs switch 2 and vr growing all the time with quest 4 etc.

They'll realise with time that the "embrace beyond console strategy" will just result in less overall console sales. They'll likely end up with the same or actually less profit but a more segmented market. This strategy will be a self inflicted punishment when ps6 arrives

(But you can mix and match price and game and the proportions will still be the same) $70 pc vs console for 8 million sales on each platform Pc - $392 million (30% platform tax) Total $392 million Ps5 - $560 million - Plus Ps+ revenue $640 million (even more profitable if you count extra or premium) Total $1.2 billion I didn't even add the profit they get from third parties they charge for publishing on their own platform. Less overall console sales means less third party profit too. This revenue is non existent for Sony and microsoft for steam platform charges. So when applied, it means they need EVEN MORE sales to break even. Long term brand dilution and less overall console sales. Whereas the better solution as a business would be to lower game budgets and streamline

@DalazG We've known for a long time they need to scale back game budgets. However this generation showed that the exclusives do not sell. People are buying the boxes for free to play games. Also We've known since the 8th gen these companies always end up selling consoles at a loss. One thing I don't think people understand is the companies still need money. While Sony may be going to aa budgets they most likely will still sell them at full price. I hope I'm wrong. I want to see old gameplay styles return, more remasters or ports/new entries in long forgotten ips. I know it won't happen as the general market now doesn't want these games no matter the price. Ninja gaiden collection was 3 games in one and still sold poorly. The new target market wants free to play games and call of duty. Unless for new consoles they're going to scale it's price back alongside software prices. Everything is going up in price that people are more picky than ever or will jump on a subscription as it has more value for the dollar than buying each game full price from the consumer standpoint. I never want a brand to fail, i just want them to do right buy their customers.

Herman Hulst has a game company background unlike Sarah Bond who has no F* idea. Hulst is in charge if software/games. While Hideaki Nishino has been part of Sony Computer Entertainment since about 2009, so I'd like to think he understands gaming. Which i still don't think Phil Spencer uneestands.

That's what the Xbox fanboy community wanted to cover so they blew the whole Square goin 100% multiplat story way outta proportion to cover up those abysmal Xbox console sales. Square's exclusive deal with PS isn't why their pivoting to a more multiplat approach, it's because of the $140million they lost in canceled projects, Sony ain't had nothing to do with that but ofcourse Xbox fanboys had to spin the narrative to cover those abysmal 800k console sales compared to PS 5million.

I just always find it sad that PlayStation always has to lie about their numbers specially lately they just keep changing them all the time. Nintendo is so close to actually catching up to their numbers so PlayStation decides oh we raise it by another 5 million sales they keep doing that every time something gets really close to their sell numbers they keep raising it. Even if they say the day before, oh we have 50 million consul sold they’ll be like oh well. The other person has almost 50,000,000 they have 49 million oh we’re gonna say we have 60 million now but the sad fact is their numbers are way off by 50%. They’ve sold half of what they said they sold. Steven more funny when they got caught in the act in investor said well if you sold that many consoles then you owe me a lot more money because guess what your numbers are often you owe me a lot more money and they’re saying oh we don’t owe you anything, but they do if they really said they sold many consoles. They owe them a lot more money.
