As far as Shenmue 1&2 HD is concerned, that seems like it is up to Sega to make a decision on that, hopefully after seeing the response with the E3 reaction and the Kickstarter reaction, they will see that it is indeed within there interest to make them.

The games are cumulative, you can take all your items and the level of training for your moves and the learned move over to shenmue 2, the American file of shenmue 1 won't natively work with the pal shenmue 2 but there is a shenmue converter disks that fans made so you can make it happen, there's even an English mod for the dreamcast shenmue 2

this goes to show that just because a big company think a series is dead doesn't mean there are not a lot of people who care, I'm glad sony understands the importance of this and is willing to do something like this to make so many devout fans very happy, and even better Sony has said that they will be doing things like this with other cult followings and have been making a list for such things and are supporting projects like these.

I AM GOD Shenmue I was on the Dreamcast in English and Japanese, but Shenmue II was only in Japanese on the Dreamcast and in English on Xbox. Shenmue was the beginning of everything that you play now. Fully voiced, a massive detective series, with multiple fun mini-games (like ACTUAL games in the form of arcade machines), fun collectibles (SEGA toys), a fighting system similar to Tekken complete with unlockable moves, daily jobs to earn money and learn more about supporting characters, day and night cycles, living AI where each NPC has an activity each day and you can follow them throughout the day, a very strong set of characters and story. And of course, the famous birth of quicktime events and honestly almost every other game has failed to replicate the extent of Shenmue's quicktime events. Shenmue QTE's would let you continue if you failed multiple QTE's, and the story would change and evolve if you were successful or not. However simple that may seem, Shenmue made each QTE feel rewarding as opposed to the modern take of QTE's where it comes off as lazy. It was a shame Shenmue never went past II until now. 7+ books were written for Shenmue, with each book being worth a full game. There was even transferable save data going from Shenmue I to Shenmue II on the Dreamcast where collectibles, fighting moves, and choices made all carried over. The locations that you travel to Shenmue are full of intrigue and wonder. It's one thing to see someone play I or II on KZbin, but to have experience that 15 years ago was simply breathtaking. It's a game that accumulated so much of what a great game needs and was really ahead of it's time. Shenmue gave birth to Yakuza, but Yakuza never really filled the void Shenmue left. Shenmue had so much wonder to it and every single foot in Shenmue had so much detail in it. Every holdable object could be investigated, rotated and explored, there was no expense spared. Shenmue cost the studio a lot to make, which is why Shenmue III never really got off the ground. Had Shenmue came when the Dreamcast had died, we probably when have seen the full story. Shenmue was a tragedy as it almost died along with the Dreamcast and SEGA never explored the option of Shenmue III as Shenmue II didn't get the sales it needed which was mostly due to the missing localised version on Dreamcast and Japanese games never sold well on Xbox. If you had a checklist of what features games have today, Shenmue ticks all of them and it did it 15 years ago. I'm glad Yu Suzuki and Sony are bringing the series back to life. Ryo deserves to catch the man that killed his father, Lan Di.

Underground3 theres a rumor shenmue 3 was in some alpha stages of development when sega finally pulled the plug on the series so app the assets for shenmue 3 exist somewhere as evidenced by this exert of a suzuki interview from 2010 YS: The concept for Shenmue 3 already exists, so... [Laughs] The world of Shenmue 1 and 2 expanded outward. So, for example, in the original games, of all the data used for dialogue in the game, the main characters' dialogue was about 20%. The remaining 80% was dialogue by characters other than the two main characters. But Shenmue 3 doesn't expand outward, but inward. A lot of the dialogue is used for the main character and especially dialogue with Shenhua. They talk about a lot of different, deeper things. For example, and I can't say too much, but here's an example. This is not actually in the game, but as an example to give you an idea of what I mean by deeper dialogue, when Shenhua and Ryo are at home, Shenhua will ask Ryo if he would like to drink tea or coffee and the player will select one or the other. Or, Shenhua will ask Ryo a hypothetical question like: "There are four animals; a monkey, cat, dog and bird. You are crossing the river but you need to leave one behind. Which one will you leave behind?" And the player has to choose one. Shenhua will ask lots and lots of questions like these and the answers will get stored in the game and affect the outcome of the player's relationship with other characters. It's like a personality test. For example, the person who leaves behind the monkey is the type of person who leaves their wife."

I'm guessing its very early in the process but, honestly the graphics looked very dated. Nice effects and lightning but VERY low polygons, looks like mid-terms PS3.

Very good news to learn that Shenmue is still in people's memory. It was like no other game back in 2000. Everything here looks good, except the faces don't look right. If the artists take a look at the Shenmue Online trailer from '08 would be a good reference point on our high poly characters should look and likeness. I hope they fix the faces.

Even today when I watch play throughs I am still capitivated by Shenmue story and believable "living" world.

Sony actually is helping Suzuki san to make the game and the only way that was gonna happen is to know for sure there's demand for it. and Kickstarter is the best vocal way to convince the guys that green light these projects to do it. The embarrassing thing here is that Suzuki san was obliged to look for help to make his game to begin with. and that's not to blame suzuki san but rather SEGA and probably the whole mentality of the japanese industry these days. Btw, the recent successful Kickstarter Bloodstained campaign was under similar circumstances. Igarashi san needed the kickstarter to convince the investors that there's demand. If there are enough fans that want the game then they won't mind putting their faith and money on the project and that also speaks in the language of the corporate people that all they care about is money. So really.. Win Win for everybody.
