Why can't you use the OTE as the holding contact, instead of assigning a new bit? Am I missing something? Or just a style thing?

You can definitely use the OTE as the Holding Contact, but that only gives you the status of the OTE bit. It doesn't actually look out in the field and see the status of the contactor... i.e. did it actually turn on. That is why we called this one "closed loop" due to the fact that we have wired the NO contacts of each contactor for feedback from the field.
