Yes, some of us do know geography. Assigned to W Germany as a new LT in the 70's (1st Armored Div, M60 tanks). I remember being tasked to do night exercises. We only had 4hrs of darkness (1130 to 0330) since it was summer time. That was before GPS so lat, long and grid coordinates were important to land nav. And, right now am living near same lat as northern Africa and the middle east.

Summers here in South Florida, which are about 5-6 months long, are HOT as hades and humidity like a sauna even at night. Our night time temps in the summer months are 80-85 F or 27-30 C. I personally try to stay inside in the AC as much as possible in the summer months and plan my outdoor activities right around this time of the year. We just started to get the slightly cooler (80's F in the day and 70's F at night) and dryer air from the north a few weeks ago, right after those two hurricanes came through. That works for me because its gator hunting season right now, we have about another week to go. By the way, geography and history were my two favorite subjects when I was in school but you're right, a majority of my classmates back then couldn't tell you what county they lived in, or what the next city over from them was, and they sure as heck couldn't find places like Greece or Turkey on a map to save their lives....lol

U.S. citizen here - in a geography class I had in college, our first test had a bonus question that asked where on a map of the United States was the city our college was in located (this was Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio). Apparently the geography professor has been putting this question on the test for years. So when we got our tests back, the professor produced a map showing all the different places in the U.S. some students had placed Youngstown over the years. It was hilarious to see, people put Youngstown all over the place, even as far west as California. Yeah, it was funny until you really started thinking about it - how on earth can someone not be aware of where they are on the map?!?! So yes Klaus, by all means, make fun of us. We deserve it.

Funny thing about summer in the Arizona desert, is we don't enjoy the summer here. At night it's 105F+ and during the day it could get as hot as 125F. Sleeping is rough in the heat. This is not an enjoyable time for anyone here. The Canadians who do come here, we call snow birds, and they leave in June and return in November. From November till June, our winter, is as nice or nicer than the summer of the north. We don't have much rain, considering it's a desert. So the winter is the summer here. So my summer is just beginning. and my winter is ending. I did nothing but hide from the heat for the last 4 months, and I am ready to fish and camp and travel, now. Claus, I am glad you had a great time for your summer. I hope mine will be as good, too.

Then I rented a car for a road trip to my future mother-in-law's house. I learned traffic laws, and the lines on the roads are just suggestions. It's ok to pass on a curve. Water Buffalo have the right of way. It took 8 hours to go 185 miles. Filipino kids who have never seen white guy will stop and stare, and so will their parents.

There's no sitting around, no drinking coffee, no watching TV or reading the paper or the news. None of that is needed. Get up and get out of the house and get to work. Life's to short to waste time not working and making money. You work as much as can as long as you can while you can to make a much money as you can. So you have the money to spend when your old.

Hey Claus - Damn, mate! You had 26 minutes and let loose a fusillade of pithy ideas and observations. So, now, where the hell do I start? Well, how about your best observation - Live Life by Enjoying It! I'd say you are one of the One Percenters - i.e., one of the few who's found that perfect nitch in life, enjoying it on your own terms. Bravo. For me, summer was a quiet time with not too much activity. But at my age, that's OK. Besides, I'm more of a winter person, as my immediate ancestors hail from northern Massachusetts (Boston is 42.3 N), which puts me at least near Toronto (43.6 N). "Atoms seek their lowest energy level" - spot on. Good show, "Mr. Wizard" (anyone relate to that?) In trying to maintain a modicum of brevity, the Second Law of Thermodynamics covers the concept of Entropy, with one of its definitions being - that the total entropy of a system either increases or remains constant in any spontaneous process; it never decreases. Another definition revolves around the concept of work. Can you make a system perform work? If yes, then the system is at a lower level of Entropy. When the system can no longer perform any work, it is at its highest Entropy level. And yes, you can DECREASE a system's Entropy, but that requires adding energy from OUTSIDE the system - that's why we have to eat food on a frequent basis. No food over enough time raises a person's individual Entropy to Maximum, which is the definition of death.
