Mag ik dood (Please let me die) is a poignant documentary which asks whether those suffering from chronic mental illness should have the choice to die with compassion and dignity.
It was released in the Netherlands in 2008 by Dutch documentary maker and journalist Eveline van Dijck. She had lost a sister who became psychotic at an elderly age. After several treatments, her sister suffered from severe depression for many years, resulting in suicide. Eveline asks in the film whether there could have been a better more humane option for her sister to fulfill her death wish. There are also interviews with family members who have lost loved ones to suicide and their wish, too, that there had been a better way. It is done with great sensitivity.

Tja, leren luisteren naar iemand met een doodswens is voor de meeste moeilijk. Waardoor ze komen met "de zon schijnt" en "ooit gaat het goed komen", waarmee je iemands gevoelens dus juist totaal negeert en niet serieus neemt. De mens heeft nog veel te leren.

Life is an imposition. You're forced to run in an ever faster spinning hamster wheel for a few dozen years, then you'll surely die, if you're 'lucky' you won't lose you're marbles or shit in a diaper at the end. Meanwhile you have to keep everyone around you happy, get lied to by politics, religion and 'business'. All that in a dying biosphere we have polluted by having so many of us here all at once. It's all a bunch of nonsense and I applaud those who have the courage to leave early, but we all leave in the end. Stop having children and avoid causing all this misery.

Er zijn gewoon verschrikkelijke mensen op deze wereld zonder enig gevoel en net zo koud en leeg als deze maatschappij. De mensen die zich slecht voelen, ik ook, staan vaak alleen in hun pijn en verdriet, worden niet gehoord of begrepen, hebben inhoudsloze gesprekken en zitten vast in procedures. Het gaat er niet om dat het wel weer goed komt, het gaat erom dat je jezelf mag zijn ook al is het op dat moment niet goed. Wees er voor elkaar zonder oordeel zonder dat je je schuldig voelt want de mensen die het aangaat zijn geen egoïsten, want anders waren ze ook niet zover gekomen. Ik vind de nabestaanden heel liefdevol en ik hoop dat ze vrede mogen vinden.

I was curious how you were doing, and I am glad to see you are still around, active on Facebook,posting beautiful pictures. This shows how careful one must be about euthanasia. Fact is your were really unhappy 3 years ago and now it seems you lead a happy, normal life. Things can change, however there are people that suffer so incredible and have no option of a better future, they should have the freedom to choose life or dead.

Inderdaad mijn beste vriendin kreeg die medicatiezooi en daarna nog iets erbij door artsen waarop haar dood volgde letterlijk is zij gewoon vermoord.Inderdaad rotzooi helpt ons niet. Laat ieder zelf beslissen over zijn of haar leven ik ben voor het eigen belang leven of niet.

Mental illness can be treated successfully, I had long term chronic depression and panic disorder and am now very happy. I would like to give hope that recovery from Mental illness is possible. I didn't believe that it was so I understand pessimism and hopelessness. But recovery is possible.

Ik kan me voorstellen hoe het voelt. Je moet door zetten. WTF. Ik snap als ze zegt het lichaam zijn en voelen en dat ze niet meer kan. Ik vraag al meer als een jaar maar niemand luistert naar mij en niemand wilhelpen om dit op een liefdevolle manier te doen. En als iemand kapot is kapot is gegaan kapot is geboren waarom ben je dan egoïstisch om niet te helpen om het liefdevol te doen. Vroeger hete het offer aan de goden. Niemand wil helpen met een liefdevolle manier om te sterven.
