omg What kinda parallel universe is this ??? Katie took Maria role as the one in the middle. Maria took Will role as the one who hate it. And Will took Katie role as the one who love it ! This is one for the AU folks.

the dynamic's all wrong, will's the one who liked it and maria's the hater and katie's the one in the middle, what is happening

Please continue the series!!!!!!!! I've read it all this year and absolutely loved it, well for the first book I had to keep reminding myself it was written in the 90s for children, but it was ok. Also it helped to have some spoilers because I'd read all the blurbs.

Based on Maria and Katie's reception of the book, i get the feeling that "Thick as Thieves" would work so much better for them since it's similar to "The Thief" but improves on things so much more and doesn't have the same issues. Also it's my favorite book of this series so it'd be great if they read up to that point! EDIT: oomph, Katie's recounting of the scene of Gen in the room with the gods gave me the same chills I got when I read that scene. It still lingers with me to this day for how well it was written.

What’s crazy is what I remember about this series ISN’T IN THIS BOOK. I thought the big scary thing happened in this book, it’s the next one. I think even the big reason I love this series is…how things happen after the next book. You guys have to do the Queen of Atolia. Maybe not the whole series, but at least the next one. Please!

The point with the Moira scenes was that she was monitoring his progress in what turns out to be a holy trial. She's basically his exam proctor, and also the first sign that the gods are real and watching. She's not so much "giving her blessing" as "letting him know the rules of the test" - which he doesn't necessarily realise until after the fact. God nonsense is also how Gen knew about the river and the Magus didn't. It's implied to be divine intervention - both the flooding and the warning. It is also relevant to the "dumb reason" Gen's mother died. Followers of the God Eugenides die when their god lets them fall.

I love the view count going up this much in such a short amount of time because it shows that there's a lot of eager people and hopefully it convinces them even more to check out the rest of this series.

A lot of people aren't big fans of the first book either; it’s more like a prologue. But the sequels make the entire series worth it. One of my all time faves.

I LOVE this series. I agree that the traveling does wear on a bit long but it was the first book I ever read where I had no complaints about the plot and the characters, and just thought to myself “that was a good book”. the second book is AMAZING as a follow up PLEASE KEEP READING

I read this series last year and I loved it! I agree with your comments but ultimately enjoyed it. She should have combined the first and second book bc the gods thing goes nowhere here but it becomes a push and pull of the gods wanting him to do stuff and gen saying no. İf we weren't hiding gens identity from the audience we could have had pol remind him of his dad, and when he died a goddess could have appeared and told gen to look to strike some fear in him abt the coming conflict. I will say İ appreciate in retrospect that we got a chance to see inside gens head bc later on the pov gets more and more removed from him and we have to rely on our knowledge of him to know what he's thinking.

I think people have argued that if you like this series you will hate The False Prince series and visa versa and I fully support that propaganda because I instantly wanted to read more of the False Prince series and I struggle to go on to the second in this series.

Gen spends the first and third books pretending to be a whiny, useless piece of shit. The second book he's depressed enough to actually believe it. My take is that he has far too much fun being underestimated and annoying people who remind him of his relatives, but the alternative to Annoying Gen is Terrifying Gen.

omg watching you guys talk about the thief was almost painful. like,, i had the exact same problems with the first book being too slow but now that i've read the whole series and it's my favourite the first book has become a comfort book. so i'm like,,, what do you mean, why don't you love it???? lmao i'll say book 3 and then book 2 are my favourites of the series, so i think if you do read it you'll probably like them more?

I haven't read this book, but the pacing of it sounds a lot like The Wheel of Time books, especially book 6 Lord of Chaos. It's one of the longest books in the series, most of it is just conversations without too much plot. Then, one of the best battle scenes of the entire series happens and it's barely a page and a half....yeesh!

I might read this series... I was hoping the author had another series after she had more experience but this is it.
@mirroredhour6 ай бұрын
It took her 20+ years to write the whole series so the first book isn't indicative of what the whole series will be like overall. Megan approves A LOT. Even the difference between this book and the second book is huge (but if you don't like "The Queen of Attolia" then you probably won't like what the series has to offer).
@CrisM7796 ай бұрын
This was such a strange book for me. I didn't hate it and it's not a bad book but whenever I think of it, I can only remember how annoyed I was with it. It felt like the author was so proud of herself with her little twist like "muahaha, no one will know, it will be so satisfying!". No, it wasn't! The moment they stopped and had the first campfire and recounted myths for the first time, anyone following would figure it out. Okay, maybe not everyone, but an adult certainly will. The only reason you don't know exactly who Gen is from the start is because you don't even know Eddis exists and has a queen. I really wished the author didn't try to be clever with the twist and just told the readers from the start who Gen was. Then we could at least be somewhat afraid that he might slip up and be caught in a lie by the Magus. Also, I wasn't super keen on the prose either because for half the book it was "we went there and did this, and then we ate and then we slept and then he snarked at me and then I sulked and then we travelled a bit more and then I complained that I was hungry".

But it's very good! It's a heist, magical heist! And then a heist in a heist! And sprinkles of hints that everything is not as it seems. I love detectives, so for me the tension was there, what is really happening here??

I feel very sad that you do not fully appreciate this book. Please read the others as it is an awesome series and each book is better than the previous one. While the other books are in third person or first person, the story is told from the perspective of other characters, so you mostly see Gen through their eyes, and it is a very partial view. That is why it is important that the first book is told from Gen’s perspective so that we can understand his worldview, the kind of person he is, and how he gets under people’s skin (deliberately). He is ultimately a reluctant hero. The other important thing in this book is that Gen develops a relationship with the gods, which is a theme that continues and develops through the series - to what extent can people choose their fate and to what extent do the gods decide?
