Where is the dignity in the Mapusa Market? The vibrant Mapusa flower market, a cornerstone of Goan commerce, is facing a crisis that tarnishes its beauty. Our senior citizen flower sellers, the very women who bring life and color to the market, are subjected to appalling working conditions. Basic necessities are sorely lacking. Fans are absent, leaving them to endure the relentless Goan heat. Toilets, a fundamental human right, are nowhere to be found. They are forced to conduct their business amidst a disorganized sprawl, further compounded by the recent cable connection debacle. The carelessly dug trenches, left with exposed cement chunks, create an obstacle course for both vendors and customers. This situation begs the question: Why must these respected women, the backbone of the market, be treated with such disregard? Is this the legacy we wish to leave behind? The Mapusa market deserves better, and more importantly, our esteemed senior Goan citizens deserve to work with dignity and respect.
