Of all the many configurations J. McL has played in, this "Heart of Things" line up is one of my all time faves! Some droids complained J. McL didn't solo enough. I think he was somewhat influenced by Weather Report's ensemble playing where the entire band runs through extended arrangements together vs. just solo'ing over chords. And of course, like Miles, he was influenced compositionally as well as the spirit of Duke Ellington. Everyone on this tour is a monster in their own right - Jim Beard - kb, Gary Thomas - sax, Matthew Garrison - bs. (son of Jimmy Garrison, Coltrane's bass player), Mr. DC - Dennis Chambers - perf. and the Maestro, J. McL. It's so great to be able to see these concerts live with great sound. God Bless You Tube!

Totally agree! The sound and the composition of “T.H.O.T.T.” Album are the Highest Level or JML production
@tiluriso Жыл бұрын
Agree, in fact this is probably my favorite JM band since the original Mahavishnu Orchestra line up. Another one I really dig was his short lived 1994 Trio project, The Free Spirits - w/ Dennis Chambers and Joey DeFrancesco. Their live at Blue Note Tokyo is an amazing record.

Continued inovation. I could only find this in Jeff Beck and John's work.

@@afattorelli Holdsworth and Bill Connors come to mind. Bill with Return to Forever then went all acoustic and exploded in the 80's with his own brand of Legato style ( Holdsworthian) technique. But ya...JeFF B. just kept doin' and more of the impossible on the guitar with such grace and confidence. Yep- agreed on that. I'm there's a lot of other ever evolving innovators we haven't mentioned and i could i could geek out more. Appreciate your response

To have a band like this with great skilled, disciplined, well trained musicians.... is something only Masters like John Mc Laugling, Chick Corea, Frank Zappa, and few others could afford in the past, and I don't see anyone for the future right now.

I saw this Tour in Cambridge U.K ~ The Band were held up in a traffic jam and arrived late, crowd ushered out of the hall so they could Soundcheck. I watched them run through a couple of numbers through a window in the door. Crowd let back in. John seemed unhappy and uncomunicative, and I swear they ran through the tunes real fast so much so that it was hard to grasp what they were doing, (going through the motions at hyperspeed?) I'm greatfull for this upload to get a grip on what I missed!

When I heard groovemaster Dennis played the late 1980 Mahavishnu reformat it sounded interesting. Never was much Mahavishnu fan in 70s. Jim Beard I probably knew his style an Matt the pedigreed bassist from Herbie's future2future video. This group is slamming! I did like Johnny McLaughlin Electric Guitarist LP 70s so the man is a Master.
