loved this video! I agree--as someone just learning how to paint, I find that rather than abandoning a painting that doesn't seem to be "working," I can use it as a "first draft." Then with each subsequent draft I know how to avoid mistakes made on the earlier draft. Best way to learn. Great to see your mom out there with you sketching too!

Thanks! I've learned to approach each painting as a learning experience. It makes the whole artistic journey a lot more fun and ultimately it makes you a better painter. I used to be focused on the end result, now I'm focused on the process. So much more enjoyable.

The horizontal banding gives serenity and space but at the same time the mtn reversal, the cloud positioning and the foreground peninsula bit really clinched it in such a way that avoided monotony and as you pointed out, gives the eye an easy journey through the scene. The water - a "painter's friend" - puts life and light into it. I can't look at this piece without hearing the birds.

Really appreciate your comments on composition especially how you adjusted the shape of the background mountain so that the eye movement can flow better. Having just watched Plein Air Live last week, I appreciate even more your thought process on not painting exactly what we see. Your painting came out great and the warm glimmering water in the background and background mountain value work wonderfully.

Thanks! Experience has taught me the importance of composition. It's a difficult subject to teach. I'm trying to include some of the changes I make to a scene and explain my reasoning.

I always love the wetlands shapes and paint them here at our Nevada bird sanctuary!! Great shadow tips for your talented mom!! your finished painting has some really good observational qualities..the intense brown is a beautiful color...I'm not sure about those 5 little discs of water..they are all the same...and maybe you should have stayed with the morning BLUE light in the foreground...also I would have made the distant mountains smaller..perspective.. YES!!Edgar Payne painted the same scene many times...I'm doing that now and have found it a HUGE help!! happy painting and happy trails to you, Michael.

I think it's like rereading a book. Often times you'll experience a deeper understanding of the subject matter. I'm convinced it's a good thing to do!
@lorijohnson7734 жыл бұрын
@@chamberlainpaintings Agreed. Funny that I thought it would make the painting look more contrived but you say the rehearsals allow you to be more expressive. Interesting.

@@lorijohnson773 What I've realized is, the first time with a new scene or subject you spend a lot of time experimenting and solving problems. This slows down the process and limits spontaneity. Once you know how to handle the subject, the spontaneity will return.

My girlfriend and I brought 3 of our twenty something kids sketching/painting with us to The Garden of the Gods recently. They were so engrossed, even continued on their paintings when we got home. Together, in art! And thanks for the reply re: Marshall Point. You got it right about the scene. Looking back at the keeper’s house from the walkway.

I think the only thing I don't care for in the painting is that the bright water near the mountain makes a straight line all the way across the canvas. The mountains are great, I will have to study that :-)
@chamberlainpaintings4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that straight line bothers me too. If I want to have bright light on the distant water I may need to darken it a bit more towards the edges of the panel so the lines isn't one value all the way across. I could also add some irregularities to the marsh grass as well.

It’s funny how you said the little plein air groups are not very welcoming. I was struggling to try to find a friendly group around here where I live. They do seem persnickety and quite competitive. I have not enjoyed the two seasons that I’ve tried to paint with them. This season I’m on my own again. Would be great to just find one person who loves to paint and does it because it brings them joy not because they want to be better than someone else. BTW you are a natural teacher.
@chamberlainpaintings4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kathy! There's way too much competition in the art community. People are missing the point. If I'm painting with someone and they do a great painting I'm excited for them, it inspires me! I suggest you find a motivates beginner to paint with. No ego, and they're usually so appreciative of any tips you can pass along.
