Aren't plenary indulgences bad because the Church sold them? Aren't they old and outdated, only from the Middle Ages? No! Fr. Chris Alar explains why.

Here are two ways I help the souls in purgatory. One is the Saint Gertude prayer which Jesus gave that promised to release 1000 souls from Purgatory. The second one is the Flame of Love Devotion that's helps bring us bring us closer to Jesus, releases the soul of a priest, releases a soul from Purgatory with a new Hail Mary prayer.

Loved this explanation. I had a listen to it while taking a break from spending so far two and a half hours cleaning up a good amount of the bedbug spray from most of the floor. Where the spray has to stay on the floor is on all of the tiles that are in front of the baseboards. Just to let you know that when I was finally sprayed as a precaution for bedbugs around 12:25 pm I had a friend drive me to the post office to mail my House Blessing registry. I meant to mail it sooner but when I put it away in one of my desk drawers, when getting my apartment ready for last month's spray I thought I lost because I found it again just yesterday. So hopefully it will get to you before November 12. I don't know about you, Fr. Chris, but I have to the rest of my apartment cleaned up considering that I've been awake since 4:30am.

I have some questions about plenary indulgence: For example, a man committed several mortal sins in a month. Then, he decides to make a valid sacramental confession. After the confession, he decides to stay in the Blessed Sacrament for 30 minutes, pray the intentions of the pope, receive Jesus in Holy Communion. His intention is to get plenary indulgence. When he goes out of the Adoration Chapel, a car hits him and dies immediately. Questions: 1) Will he go straight to heaven if he dies after getting the plenary indulgence? 2) If he has gained a lot of plenary indulgences in his lifetime but he dies in a state of mortal sin, what will happen to his soul? 3) The Church says that we can get a lot of plenary indulgences (especially for daily communicant and those who frequently confess), if one plenary indulgence is needed to get us to heaven, why do we need to strive to get more indulgences?

Collecting baseball cards, stamps, books.....and now plenary indulgences? I can't stand hot weather, therefore how can I stand purgatory? I need this! (lol) Father, on October 30, can you please address the following: 1) If I go to Confession on a Saturday and for six (6) straight days after, i receive Holy Communion, pray for the Intentions of the Holy Father, and read 30 minutes of Scripture will I have earned six (6) plenary indulgences? Will that one (1) Confession "stick" for those 6 days, granted that I was in a state of grace? 2) Plenary indulgence(s)....how much is enough and how much do we actually need? Can one actually "collect" them? Can one actually lose them? 3) Lastly, can you please explain, with a number of examples, on what "detachment of sin" means? What is difference between, just not doing the sin anymore, versus "detaching" from it? I am confused with the word "detach" in this form. I look forward to the October 30th video, because I learn so much from you and you are very easy to understand. Thanks in advance! -VN

I have a question though I'm not certain how best to phrase it. The world tells us that "venting" our problems is healthy. But we as Catholics know that this is still gossip. How can we break that cycle? How can we stop ourselves? Say for example you have a loved one who keeps leaving the front door unlocked at night because he or she just can't be bothered to pay attention to what they are doing. And you vent about this to a co-worker on a regular basis. How do you stop yourself? (I'm using a totally made up example. Because the action of the person being vented about isn't the issue.) 2nd Question could you maybe have Father Chris do a big talk on Gossip?

Even with this definition, it still admittedly scandalizes me. I’m having trouble reconciling this and harmonizing this with other beautiful Catholic teachings like sharing in the sufferings of Christ, redemptive suffering, and participatory suffering. Also for others that have had severe temporal punishments this side of heaven (akin to David losing his son) how is that fair compared with someone who has a plenary indulgence.
@JoeSwingleIII

You must remember that it is not up to us to understand, or try to understand God‘s ways or why he moves the way that he chooses to move within the church. However, that being said, there is also a hierarchy in heaven, and the degree to which we share in Christ suffering here on earth, will be the degree to which we share in his resurrection in heaven. we do not necessarily know exactly how justice works from the hand of God, but we do know that he is perfectly just and when you die, you will completely understand how God is both perfectly merciful, and perfectly just.

A plenary Indulgence can certainly be done everyday. You could pray the Rosary in a church or with another person, you could do 30 minutes of adoration, you could do 30 minutes of reading scripture, or walking the Stations of the cross. It only has to be one of those or any of the many of the church offers. Also communion is to be done for each plenary Indulgence even if it is the next day. Absolutely no scripture backs up plenary indulgences or purgatory when taken in context. Nothing unclean will be in heaven and nothing you can do will ever make you clean. It is Jesus who makes you clean and it is only through Jesus , no one else. John 14:6 9:11 praying for the dead ? Come on read the context as the scripture at no time says to pray for the dead . Judas prays for the dead so that they may attain godliness but why did God slay them in the first place? Read the entire context not this cherry picked verse. Forgiveness of sins happens here not in any afterlife. Heb 9:27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, Do you see die once and then a clean up before judgement?

Punishment/purification is not the same as guilt/forgiveness. Some on the former camp may undergo purgatory for purification, but they were already judged and guaranteed heaven. As to your assertion purgatory is not in Scripture, many church fathers disagree (the church didnt start in the 16th century). I do agree it is not in your interpretation if Scripture. Jesus washed us CLEAN in His name, if you enter judgement day while remaining in HIM, then you are ALREADY CLEAN. Yes, Jesus is the only way to the Father. Mary doesn't lead us to the Father. She leads us to Jesus. Andrew brought Peter to Jesus. Philip brought Nathanael to Jesus. That is a form of mediation. In proclaiming Christ the one mediator (cf. I Tim 2:5-6), the text of St. Paul's Letter to Timothy excludes any other parallel mediation, but not subordinate mediation. In fact, before emphasizing the one exclusive mediation of Christ, he urges "that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be made for all men" (2:1). If subordinate mediation is not allowed, please don’t ask anyone to pray for you because prayers are a form of mediation. Moreover, the Greek word used for "one" that St. Paul used here in I Tim 2:5-6 in the phrase "one mediator" is not monos, which would mean "sole," but eis, which can mean "one" in the sense of "principal," or "first in a series." Jesus is the principal Mediator who enables many other sub-mediators to transmit the grace of God to others. Again, faithful Christians act as sub-mediators in Christ when they pray for their neighbors, share the Gospel with the lost, and serve the poor. The Bible says that our growth in faith and holiness is aided by the intercessions of the other members of the Body of Christ (Eph 6:18; I Thess 3:11-13; I Tim 2:1-4), and there’s no better intercession than that of Jesus’ own mother. Jesus comes from the line of David an in the Davidic Kingdom the role of the Queen Mother was important (1Kings2:19). Read about how she had the function of "counselor" to the king in regards to all matters. God blesss.

The Scriptures say we are saved by grace but we need to cooperate with that grace. James says faith without works (of love) is dead and Paul says Faith without works (of love) cannot save. He never said "faith alone" in Romans 3:28 as Martin Luther added the word "alone." Matthew 25 clearly shows the need for works of love, not works of the law. You can benefit by reading about the sheep and the goats in Matt 25. That is traditional scripture and Catholic Church teaching. The King James version came much later. God bless.

@@DivineMercy_Official What I'm saying is that the Eucharist is supposed to forgive venial sins. So if I died after receiving the Eucharist why would indulgences be necessary? Why would I go to Purgatory? The Eucharist should be powerful enough to cleanse me from those sins that need temporal punishments.
