I found this plesiosaur vertebra earlier this year on private land, it was almost fully hidden inside rock and thought this would be a great candidate to try out some acid prepping using acetic acid (vinegar). I use normal strength acid prep and I would remove the rock to within 1mm of the bone and then put it in acid to remove the rest.
It's very important to only put the fossil in the vinegar for 1 hour and then for 12 hours in fresh water (refreshed every 3 hours) to make sure all the vinegar is leached away before applying a layer of B72 paraloid on any exposed bone for the next acid cycle.
I use the angle grinder sparingly and only when I am 100% sure there is no bone nearby, you don't want to cut through a surprise bone!
This bone is an estimated 80 million years old so the elasmosaurus was swimming around while there were dinosaurs roaming around on the land.
I've gotten in touch with my local museum and will donate it should they want it for their collection.
It's always such a privilege to be the first human to ever see something like this and it's so awesome that I can share it with you!
I used a combinations of manual prepping and acid prepping to uncover this dorsal vertebra.
