I bought the pi before knowing if I'd be able to install this (I'm a newbie when it comes to Linux/Ubuntu), and I was losing hope after spending days searching for a tutorial I could actually understand. I have a latest gen mini pc that I want to use as a DIY NAS using OpenMediaVault. THAT is where I would like my Plex media to live. Can I do this if I can map a drive from the NAS to the Plex server pc? In other words, does Plex media have to physically live on the same box that the Plex server is installed on?

Great video! Thanks. I'm wondering, can media be kept in the user's home folder? Would that be a better way to go than using opt or mtn? I ran into a lot of permissions issues when trying to keep media in my home folder, as Plex wouldn't show the contents in it without my adjusting the permissions. Took me ages to find how and why this has to be done. Is there any possibility you could do a tutorial on how to deal with that for newbies?
@KeepItTechie

Yes, absolutely! You can store the media anywhere on the local machine. If it's remote, just mount it to a directory locally.

Can you help?
@KeepItTechie
@KeepItTechie 5 ай бұрын
Hey there! No worries, making the switch from Windows to Linux can be tricky at first. To get Plex to see your disks on Pop!_OS, you'll need to mount your drives and set the correct permissions. Start by opening the file manager and clicking on your media drives under "Devices" to mount them. Next, open a terminal and use the command sudo chown -R plex:plex /path/to/your/media (replace /path/to/your/media with your actual media folder path) to give Plex permission to access your files. Finally, in Plex, go to "Settings," then "Libraries," and click "Add Library." Select the type of media you're adding and browse to the directory where your media is stored. If you still run into issues, feel free to reach out again. You've got this!

Great video! considering converting my windows based plex server to Linux and I found this video helpful. You mentioned shared drives and permissions on another video? This is what i need help wit the most. Currently my Plex server is based on the OS drive and all media is on separate drives. So I need to learn how to migrate those drives over and make them accessible to plex. I believe I would need to permanently mount the drives and change the permissions?
@KeepItTechie
@KeepItTechie Жыл бұрын
Yep you can mount the drive using the fstab file. Once you do this, every time your server reboots it will automatically mount the share the server. You can adjust the permissions as needed once you do that. I'll make a video and try to cover all the scenarios.

@@KeepItTechie Thank you! that would be helpful. I cant find a definitive answer on how to do this. Great videos thank you.

@KeepItTechie Жыл бұрын
I can understand your concern about privacy and security. Plex does have an option to disable remote access and only allow local network access, which can help mitigate any potential risks. Additionally, it's important to keep your Plex server and local network secure with strong passwords and other security measures. But ultimately, it's up to you to weigh the benefits and risks of using Plex or any other service. Thanks for bringing up this important topic and stay safe out there!

Same here. What I expected is to be able to create a 'media' directory in my home directory, and after creating 'movies' and 'tv shows' directories, and adding the appropriate media to those directories, that Plex would be able to read from it. However, it doesn't, and this is a pesky user/group issue that Plex for Linux burdens users with. KeepItTechie, if you can walk folks through how to deal with that setup, that would be really appreciated.

@@shish99 I formatted my drives under Ext4, created an auto mount under /media/movies and it worked. My drivers were originally NTFS (because I came from Windows and did not want to remove everything) but in the end I had little choice. A forum suggested that as solution so spend a day restoring backup. It works and I can continue using my 12 years old pc as media center (it used to run Windows 7 which I couldn't upgrade anymore to W10).
